What Do You Listen To When You're In Pain?

Wed Jul 13, 2005 2:08 am

What kind of music do you tend to listen to when you're in emotional pain? Any particular band or artist or just a general genre of music that helps you vent or heal?

I've always found that whenever I'm deeply upset about something I can listen to Pink Floyd and it helps me vent out that hurt or anger through the music itself. By the end of the album I usually feel better, if not, I throw another one in the CD player.

I've never been into heavy stuff, if I listen to that when angry I just feel even worse. Atmosphere with a bite is what usually helps me and Pink Floyd fits that perfectly.

How about you?

I listen to Wing. Her beautiful, bouncy voice makes me realize that I don't have it so bad after all.

It seems like you have a emotional problem and carry on with your anger/upset. If you let things go then you don't need to listen to music to vent out your anger.
Music is suppose to bring or add more joyfull to people life not to vent out your anger and upset.

You'll need therapy.

Phalanx - I'm alive
Linkin Park - My December
DJ Dean - It's a dream
Kai Tracid - Bad Shape

Generally Trance, especially Kai Tracid and Linkin Park. Nothing hard or happy.
I just get over some situations when I deal with them and not fleeing into happiness, 'cause then I will never get over it...

I tend to listen to songs that bring back memories of good times in my life.
Unfortunately that tends to make me start longing for the past which makes me sad when I am already down over something. Viscious circle eh!?

Music is very important to me. I have songs to suit every mood and every place. Music is a very powerful and important part of my life indeed  Smile

Mine too. Exactly as you said, I have music, songs and albums, that suit every emotion and every place that I have been. All take me to different places in my heart, and in my memories, and help me heal, or help me smile, or reminisce. Music is very important to me.

The perfect song is REM's 'Everybody Hurts'.

The lyrics describe the pain, then comes the message that you are not alone and everybody else goes through the same pain sometime or other.

It's all about understanding and then having the strength to work through it.

Pure bull. Music can and does have the ability to touch every human emotion. The notion that music should be for dancing or any other single specific purpose totally misses the point. It's a personal choice. I, however am partial to dark, brooding, or gritty songs:

A Whiter Shade of Pale
Positively Fourth Street
I Want You (She's so Heavy)

Not to mention apocalyptic passages of classical music with swirling strings and dive-bombing doublebass runs, or Mingus horn arrangements that make your spine quiver.

I like to listen to Portishead (especially "Roads"), Morphine, B.B. King, and Susan Tedeschi (mostly the title track off her "Just Won't Burn" album).

Eh...bit sensational wouldn't you say?

You're exactly right that music brings joy, however. That's why he listens to it when he feels down. I hardly see being depressed sometimes requires a visit to therapy IMO.

I'd just like to add my songs that I listen to when feeling under the weather:

Scream - Michael and Janet Jackson
It's Just One Of Those Days - Limp Bizkit
Tomorrow Never Dies - Sheryl Crow

And many more I suppose can't be assed listing them though  Big grin

Cheers,
G

What a totally bitchy reply. Music is appropriate and helps people when theyre feeling up, down or anywhere in between. So everytime someone feels a bit emotionally distrot they need therapy? Thats interesting, I might as well look for a shrink roommate. Not to mention, aloha717200 has been in a bit of a nasty situation, one in which the other party is the one in need of serious therapy.

The guy posted this to ask for some music advice, not for you to affirm that hes pretty fucked up based on a few lines of text and a person/situation you know NOTHING about.

Oh yeah I've got LOADS of that music because I am in this mood a lot recently.

Here's some of my sad music album collection:
-Sting: Sacred love
-Krezip: What are You waiting for
-Joss Stone: Mind, Body & Soul (some of the girlpowery songs)
-Keane: Hopes & Fears (this one will guarantee you tears and sulking!!!)
-Juli: Es ist Juli (some of their ballads)
-Silbermond (some of the "I don't need you no more you asshole" songs)

And examples of songs to listen to when in that mood:
-3 Doors Down: Away from the sun
-3 Doors Down: Here without you
-Alicia Keys: If I ain't got You
-Avril Lavigne: My happy ending
-Boris: When you think of me
-Desree: You gotta be
-Eric Clapton: Change the world
-Evanescene: Going under
-Hardsoul ft Ron Carroll: back together
-Jimmy Eat World: The middle
-Lemar: If theres any justice
-Silicone Soul: Feeling blue
-Volumia: Hou me vast <---Dutch music

Well... you get the idea! I am the ultimate sad music master and these were just off the top of my head.
Not drinking, also isn't a solution!
