Smells That Bring Back Memories.

Fri Jul 15, 2005 2:51 am

I was sitting in my calc class today, next to a rather cute girl with a very familiar smell.. Thinking about this for almost an hour I realized something.. She smelled exactly like the inside of a Delta 727 the last time I was on one.

No, I did not tell her she smelled like the inside of an airliner.

So does anyone else know of any smells that bring back memories for you? Ever run into these smells in strange places?

Cinnamon rolls.

When I was younger, me and my sisters used to wake up at an unholy hour Saturday mornings, make cinnamon rolls and frosting, then watch cartoons until our parents forced us away from the TV.

Those were the days-- no bills, no responsibilities, and our biggest worry was whether the cartoons would be reruns or not.

*sigh*

First time I switched on the aircon in the new car, it took me right back to when I got on a brand new 732 years ago on a hot summer's night.

The smell was exactly the same.

A lady had me over one night at her place and the smell of her apartment reminded me of a Catholic school I had a attended years ago.

My car today smells like the Mercury Monarch that we rented when we lived in Montreal (1977).

My daughter's school.

It smell's just like MY first grade class, way back in 1966, smelled. If I think about it hard enough, I can just taste the ginger snaps and watered down orange drink they would give us, with our lunch.

Anyone remember Proust's 'À la recherche du temps perdu'? The smell of 'les madeleines'?

Two things come to mind.

The perfume my wife wore when we were dating early on. I once found my self strangley attracted to a nasty looking old woman once because of the same scent.

The scent of an ex girlfriends......umm yeah... I have smelled some fishy "Tang" in my time but one of my ex's was a joy to dine at the Y....

Whenever I walk through a Chinatown in any city, as you walk past a chinese grocers (you know the ones that sell the dried stuff) It always reminds me of Hong Kong. I only have to close my eyes, and I can imagine being there.

So he asked what kind of perfume she used.

"I don't know" she said "it is blue and comes in a 55-gallon drum.

Now, CAR smells go on forever.

There WAS a time, that each of the Big Three car makers had a almost unique odor to their cars.

I liked the Chrysler "new car smell" the best of 'em all. Reminds me of our then new 1964 Dodge Dart and 1968 Dodge Coronet 440 wagon.

Car smells...  rotfl   rotfl   rotfl

I remember my frosh year in college. Went out with the gf to some club. Think it was mid-winter, whatever. Walking back out after bumping and grinding for a few hrs, she starts playing grab-ass, didn't even make it back to the dorm for that one.  Wink

Decide to drive home two weeks later to see the folks, haven't touched the car since that night. I jump in, and what do I smell?

My last trip to the store, I fell in love with a store called Hollister. They spray their perfume Drift inside all their stores. The eye candy in that store is insane, and the clothes rock (yes, I'm a twenty something gay guy)

Every time I put the cologne on, it takes me back to that store, the music, and the boys  Wink

Certain colognes bring back old memories.

Brut - reminds me of my dad.
Polo - reminds me of my gay ex. (Yes, boys, I was a 'fag hag'.)

I have another memory that reminds me of a smell. When our first house was being built, I listened to Nine Inch Nails' Pretty Hate Machine almost constantly. Now whenever I listen to that CD, I can almost smell the new wood in our house under construction.

The smell of Jet-A also reminds me of my dad - spending Sundays at the airport with him.

You know how, in cold climates, there's that one day in the spring where it gets warm all of a sudden and the snow melts and trickles away and you can smell the ground for the first time in months? I miss that. We don't get that smell here. That smell always reminded me of when I was small.

This one is weird, but the stink of a paper mill is pretty nostalgic for me, having grown up in Northern Ontario.

A mixture of sea-bass and pyrrolidine?

the smell of an airport. A heavenly mix of food, cleaning fluid, carpet, jet fuel and cigarette smoke.

Whenever I smell that combination I stop in my tracks! Big grin

The smell of the lugggage whenever a relative visits from India. All those spices locked up in there for almost 2 days really gives off a typical smell when you open the suitcase!

New Car smells always do it for me.

Another one...the smell of the downstairs bathroom in my house. It's not a bad smell, just very distinctive and still lingers even though the whole bathroom was painted. It reminds me of all the times I went in there as a little kid.
