How Do You Cope With The Summer Heat?

Mon Jul 18, 2005 2:46 pm

Just back fron a nicey WE in Elbonia and the temperature was Rhaaaaaaaaaaaa, especially coming from Dublin where it is raining and cold more often than not (currently wet, actually).

How are you Continentals coping with the occurrence ? not many people on the streets of GVA and no spotters to be seen yesterday afternoon btw (30 deg. in the shade).

Two words.

Central Air!

We have had the most humid weather here. I don't like to spot when it's like this. The sky is hazy and most pics will not be worth much. This is why I love to live in the Mojave desert in the winter. So much sun!

You get used to it, and the houses are built for it. We have ceiling fans in lounge and bed rooms, and most cars have air con.

Also I have found that fabrics are lighter in clothes here, and you park the car in the shade whereever possible.

Ceiling fans, airconditioning and naked around the house since no one sees me where I live! heheh

On the street, light clothes, usually light colors and no trying not to use sleeves.

Cheers! wave

I hate FL. I want out as soon as possibile. It get's so hot in JAX and the more south you go the hotter it gets. Sometime's it's absolutely miserable/unbearable. I just stay inside with my air conditioner and log onto A.net... :P

When it's too hot outside, and there's nothing else to do, there's always sleep. Sleep in the basement, near a fan, near the A/C, near a vent for central air - the summer heat (especially where humidity is lousy) can really take a toll on the body, so a little nappy might well be in order anyway.

One of the great things about the US is that air conditioning is plentiful, and currently turned on

Prefer air conditioning, but this summer at work should be very interesting.....water fights. Will be very tempting to get the boss soaked

Air conditioning all the way, everywhere. July and August are awful in TLV. 32 centigrade and 85% humidity...

Good old-fashioned central air conditioning! And air conditioning in the car. And air conditioning at work. And air conditioning in every store and shop.

Are they in theirs homes when it's that warm? In Sweden, people get out and the girls take off their clothes, especially last week when it was 27 to 32 deg. in the shadow and a blue sky here in Stockholm.

Congratulate, here the houses are built to be warm on the winter, not cold on the summer.

Right now I have 35C in my flat, with an air mouisture content of about 50%. Last week I had the same temperatures but it was really humid, with 85% air moisture.
I cope with putting on two electric fans, and keeping the windows open for any fresh air I can get.

I agree. And it's the same way here too. I bless whoever invented it!

And the Europeans really must realise that they no longer have perfect weather all the time. I was in London in May and it was bloody boiling! Invest in the ac!

Did you know that beer dehydrates you so it doesn't realy help when its hot, but I guess where you live it never gets hot.

I guess you get used to it; or find someone with central air con and camp there for a few hours. The large scale shopping centres are a great place to be on a hot day.

Phoenix is having a major hot spell at the moment.

Went to the lake on Sat to keep cool - it was 113 so still pretty warm. Yesterday it was 116 and we had a power cut, the a/c was off obviously and the house was unliveable within about 45 mins. Today and tomorrow will be 118 so gonna stay in the office if possible!

I actually burnt myself on the water coming out of the cold tap recently  Sad

I complain about how Germans dont put airconditioning in their buildings.

We insulate our buildings to cope with cold weather (which also help with hot weather for a while).
Apart from that, having a air conditioner up and running in Germany really will make you poor, as costs for electricity is rather high.
Figure a minimum of approx. 16 EUR-ct (= 0.19 USD) per kWh ...

Welcome to HOUSTON, TX
The city of A/C with heat and humidity. I wouldn't mind at all.
On average, our summer temperature is about 95-105 F (37-38 C).
Just wear light colors clothes and drink water.

My solution to the hot weather; Wait untill it gets dark to do any hard/manual work, go to bed at 6am when it is cool enough to get to sleep, and get up at 2pm so you can still enjoy the daylight. Has been working for me recently bigthumbsup

You mean like here up in Mohave Valley/Bullhead City AZ and Laughlin, NV?

Jen and I were there for a few days this last week and it was like being on the sun. I think we spent more time in the pool than anywhere else. And because my brain was fried from the heat (if it wasn't fried already), I thought it would be a good idea to head over to Avi around sunset and shoot off some fireworks-rockets, mortars, and other cool goodies that are illegal here in CA, but conveniently sold right next to the soda cooler there. They even have a designated fireworks area so that you can shoot until you pass out, which is what I nearly did. Both pictures were taken around 1930 hours and it was still a good 110 degrees. I got a bit of a sweat going. But it was fun and worth it.

That's the one thing I like about Seattle. It's not too hot in the summer, and not too cold in the winter. Currently a comfortable 70° (21°C).

At home by getting naked  bigthumbsup

And in public, by avoiding places that are too warm until it gets cooler in the evening.

In Arizona, air conditioning, swimming pools, and finding any bit of shade you can get under.... it's been averaging 105-110F where my home is... but at least you don't have the humidity tacked on to that.

Just came back from Vegas this morning, it was 120 on Sat, 118 yesterday and it will cool off to 112 today. 9:00pm on Sat and it was still 111, ouch. At least it's a dry heat, and thank God for the pools!
