When Will It Stop: DXB To Build Indoor Ski Resort

Tue Jul 19, 2005 6:56 am

Just when I think Dubai has reached its limit....they think of something new. This time it's an indoor ski resort. Unbelievable.

Will this bubble ever burst? Or is this city-state the best thing since the internet.

Because Dubai keeps building more and more huge and exotic projects (and Emirates buys more and more A380s) that you can't help but think there's an unsustainable bubble waiting to burst. I think there's a false sense of confidence that defies economic reality - like the internet economy of the late '90s, like the U.S. real estate market right now. The Asian crisis of 1997 essentially started because of overconfidence and rampant development. To this day, there are 8-year old unfinished luxury highrises in Bangkok.

Anyway, that said, I'd still love to try this indoor ski resort!

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I wouldn't count on the bubble-bursting scenario though. Perhaps you've been to Dubai recently. If you have you'll know that it's not "false". It's nice to see it developing so much and so fast. Lovely place  Smile

The reason that Dubai is expanding so much in the tourism area, is the notion that the oil fortune won't last forever. Unlike Saudi Arabia, who have really shut tourists out (I think you need an invitation from someone in SA to be able to enter the country).

It's beginning to sound like a new place for the rich & wealthy to go on holiday. extreme luxury hotels, super resorts & now a ski "resort" to add to it.

But if the oil fortune won't last forever, why "invest" in such wasteful projects that will cost so much money to maintain? Why not invest in the wellbeing of their citizens? I can go on and on about how the US needs to do the same with the bloated military budget.

I would say that the biggest risk for the UAE is things going completely to hell next door in Saudi Arabia, for example all-out civil war leading to establishment of a regime in Riyadh that will make Afghanistan under the Taliban look like Mardi Gras in New Orleans. It will be very hard for the UAE to insulate itself from such a dangerous neighbor.

This is good for Dubai.

I was reading an article the other day for a class paper talking about the mid east realizing they are running out of oil and the price climbing at an insane rate. What it came down to was the fact the UAE was one of the few nations in the area without their head up their ass on the matter. The UAE is trying like hell to convert their economy from oil to other things, like tourism. Having the only airport in the region to serve as a major worldwide hub is just the tip of the iceburg.... err sand dune.

The indoor ski resort is yet another tourist attraction.
Things were better when it was two guys in a dorm room.

Actually, that's why they're building all this crap...

...they wanna position DXB to be the entertainment capital of the Eastern world, for when the oil profits eventually dry up.

Aren't the cheapest hotels $1000 a night? And a taxi ride costs $75? I suppose strap-on bomb vests are dirt cheap though.  duck

Not quite, cheapest hotels for Americans are around USD 5,000, the price of taxi rides is of no relevance to you, since Americans are not allowed to use taxis in Dubai and you'll get a bomb vest strapped around your big American beer belly FOR FREE upon arrival...They are manufacturing those in XXXL now! And if you start critisising Dubai, you'll get blown to shreds AUTOMATICALLY!

What a great country!  Smile

Obviously you've never been there! Dubai is one of those places where the rulers actually share their wealth with the people. And having been there several times I can tell you there are no beggars in Dubai, and that's not because they drag them out of sight, but because there ARE NONE.

And as for those wasteful projects: We call this an investment  Wink. Meaning it costs to build it, but then there's also cash inflow from people actually using it.

I fully agree on your comment about the military budget, though.

You guys are right. A closer reading of the DXB article says that the ski resort will be the world's third largest indoor resort, and the only in the Middle East.

So perhaps Madrid and Japan are 1 and 2.

I heard you can get an AK-74 in Dubai for about $20  Yeah sure

The most expensive hotel in Dubai, the all-suite Burj Al-Arab is for 1000AED (around $280), and the rate for taxis, like anywhere else, varies with trips believe it or not. But it is not that expensive, definatley not like some places (i.e. London).

I don't think the suite at the Burj is as cheap as 1,000 DH - I think it's a 1,000US.

I can tell you there are no beggars in Dubai, and that's not because they drag them out of sight, but because there ARE NONE.

Having lived in Dubai for 12 years, this is absolute nonsense. There are lots of beggars, even local emirati beggars. The only reason why you don't see it because begging is illegal.

However, as you mentioned the leaders are good people and do share their wealth.

I live in Dubai right now and i can tell you all that if any country in the world masters the art of imitation, concept imports and artificial plastic beauty, it's Dubai.

There are beggars, but the media lenses never go that way, cos it doesn't encourage investments.
There are people living in shacks, just behind those glossy high rising towers on Sheikh Zayed Rd, and nowhere else in the world are the social classes very well distinguished, as it is here.

Gez, what the hell am i doing here anyway..

-> because this I S investing in the wellbeing of their citizens. There of course also in Dubai are poor people just as everywhere but the average living standard of the "Dubaiers" is very high. Such investments will even bring more tourists and more business to Dubai, and by that also more income.

-> the hotels are relatively expensive, the Djebel Ali for instance for a single-room demands almost US$ 200.--, if included in a travel-arrangement it is around $ 100.-- per night ----- but NOT 1000 .

Than how does one know someone is a beggar if he's not allowed to beg?

Go to the co-op supermarket opposite of Karama. Go to the back in the parking lot and take a look. On numerous occassions I saw beggars thereand when the cops would come and arrest them, it was horrible and sad sight. There is no social welfare system in the UAE. If you're one of the (very generous estimate) 500,000 Emirati's yes you'll have the royal family to fall back on. But if you're a part of the 3.5M expats and something happens - good luck. Especially in a society thats so money-hungry even your friends will forget you. And let's not even mention the plight of the approxmiately1.5-2M Indians/Pakistani's/Filipino's who work outdoors in 50C weather for twelve hours nonstop. In fact they give manual laborers salt pills to prevent them from dehydrating. How humiliating is that, to give them the same thing that is used to hydrate animals!

And how about maids/house cleaners/etc ... our two house keepers (both are sisters) were with an emirati family before us. They were paid half of what they were promised before coming to Dubai from the Phillipines - were given no days off for three years and during Ramadan they had to work all day, ie:cooking meals for 30/40 people at 3AM. We were horrified from the stories we heard, however these stories are too common sometimes and you learn to accept it and move on. I could go on and on forever. Dubai is a beautiful place, it's leading the way for other Arab countries but it still has alot of catching up to do. And you won't hear about it on gulf news or on the last emirates airline promotion  Wink.

Ok, I take it you know quite a bit more about that place than I do, so I did fall for some propaganda...it's just that when you visit Dubai it seems rather plausible.

Because European tourists stay at the line of hotels on Jumeira beach, and you have tour buses that take you to the beautiful and richy rich parts of Dubai. Perhaps they should take you to al-aweer where all the laborers live. You should see the conditions these people live in ...

Which I will do next week btw....visiting Dubai that is . I'll take a good look at that new hotel, Madinat Jumeirah, Al Qasr house...looks very sweet!!

I was there in January, February and May of this year - needed to see the parents lol - anyway if you need more info email me or pm me ... ciao

Yes I know, and I even heard (from expats) that during the summer they are fiddling with "official" temperature, since from a certain number upwards (45 or 50 Celsius, not quite sure), it is forbidden to send people outside to do road-work. Actually I do believe that. (btw: Salt pills are given to many people who have to work or are practising sports during hot weather...maybe in nice colourful wrap-ups, but still salt pills  Wink).

But you see we've had this discussion before, hundreds of threads. Those expats you mention ARE working, ARE able to send money home. I mean let's admit it: Our Western societies do work in a similar way...there's cheap workforce in the USA, Canada, Germany...pick your choice. Wherever you go, you'll find people fighting for those "underprivileged", but to give way to those differences means, in short, communism, and we all know how that one worked out.

Dubai clearly is a nice and enjoyable place. That the place, which has grown from a relatively small town in 1990 (when I was there for the first time) into a really large and great city (when I went there in 2002) , also has negative sides, is absolutely normal. And the "poor" in Dubai at least from the financial point of view are much better off than the poor in Cairo, to give a comparison.
