A Real Guy Runs On The Dem Ticket In Ohio

Wed Jul 27, 2005 3:18 am

Now here we have the real kahuna. An honest to goodness Marine who served in Iraq, understands our democratic institutions, and is a tolerant guy who adheres to the American principal of "live and let live." He's blunt, he's practical, and he's a fiscal conservative (something that the current GOP is not).

And he's a Democrat.

Oh, and he's kinda studly looking too.

We need more politicians like Paul Hackett.

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/20...5/07/26/hackett_schmidt/index.html

Excerpts

Paul Hackett, a Marine who fought in Fallujah is trying to become the first Iraq war vet to serve in Congress -- and give Democrats hope that Ohio is not permanently lost. His GOP opponent is Jean Schmidt, fully esconced in the pockets of the Ohio Christian coalition.

On the issues, the candidates both describe themselves as fiscal conservatives, but on the Iraq war and the so-called moral values questions, they stand in stark relief. Hackett is a critic of Bush's Iraq war policy and believes America was led to war unnecessarily. Schmidt is a strong backer of Bush's handling of the war. Hackett is pro-choice. Schmidt is president of Cincinnati Right to Life. Schmidt voted against gay marriage in the Ohio House of Representatives, while Hackett's take is: "Gay marriage -- who the hell cares?"

Schmidt commends Hackett for his service, but believes Hackett should "stand with the president" by "supporting the Iraqi war effort and our troops that are over there," her campaign manager Joe Braun said. (Through Braun, Schmidt declined to speak with Salon.) When asked to answer that charge, Hackett is blunt: "The only way I know how to support the troops is by going over there." He doesn't hesitate to criticize Schmidt's support of the war: "All the chicken hawks back here who said, 'Oh, Iraq is talking bad about us. They're going to threaten us' -- look, if you really believe that, you leave your wife and three kids and go sign up for the Army or Marines and go over there and fight. Otherwise, shut your mouth."

I LOVE IT !!

Now watch for Republican assertions that he's not a patriot, a coward, a traitor, and that military service counts for naught, while waving a "Dubya is Jesus" banner is the hallmark of a real American.

Run for the hills...Falcon84 is going to climax!  Wink

Seriously, is this special election just to finish out Portman's term? If so, when does it end?

I guess the only two things that he has going against him is inexperience and that whole personal injury lawyer thing...

Anyways, coming from a Republican, good luck to him and many thanks for his service in Iraq.

Always look to wish a fellow veteran good luck. A fiscal conservative? We'll see. I'll probably disagree with him on several issues, seeing as he's a personal injury lawyer (which almost automatically makes him a serious democrat) but he volunteered to do his time and earned the right to say whatever he wants.

I'd be very upset if his opposition sought to try and use his service against him.

Do you seriously believe that every personal injury lawyer is an ambulance chaser who tries to find a fat, clumsy woman who drops coffee on her crotch and then screams for $$$?

There is a place for personal injury attorneys (although some should be swinging at the end of a rope). If it weren't for the development of personal injury tort law, half the products we use today in America wouldn't have the quality safeguards we have become so accustomed to.

The public is fed titillating news like the coffee case (which ended up being dismissed), but the truth is that over 75% of the crappy law suits that ambulance chasers trot out are dismissed on technical grounds even before they make it to discovery. Of the remainder, there are plenty of egregious cases brought by greedy plaintiffs and even greedier lawyers, but the vast majority are serious cases in which a real injury was experienced.

Wow, you said it...not me. More than less.  Wink

Seriously....for every good one out there you will find a hundred guys trying to find their gold mine and screw the rest of the world. I actually have met a decent PI lawyer (he donates a significant chunk of what he earns, and does not file frivolous suits) but he is the serious exception to the rule.

These guys make it easy for people to avoid taking responsibility for their own actions and have helped to create an environment of such intense litigiousness that some businesses have almost been put out of business (see GA manufacturers until Congress stepped in).

And, contrary to what we're led to believe, personal injury lawyers don't exactly make a ton of money. Sure, you have a few sharks who make a killing, but the vast majority don't.

In any case, there are some who aren't in it just for the money. Read "A Civil Action." An excellent book based on the groundwater toxic contamination cases in MA back in the 1980s, that killed over 50 children directly from cancer.

This guy has one credential on his resume that no one can argue with.

Reminds me of when a guy working in a beer distributing warehouse first ran for congress in the early Eighties.

Candidate A: “I was born in Arizona, lived here all my life,,,blah blah…”

Candidate B: “My grandfather was in the Military, My father was in the Military, I was in the Military. We moved around a lot. As a matter of fact, my longest permanent address was the Hanoi Hilton.”

Needless to say, the subject never came up again. And guess who won.

He is an interesting candidate. This guy is a moderate democrat, but the 2nd congressional district is very conservative. The republicans have held this seat (and won easily in all but one election) since the early 70s.

He has the endorsement of the Cincinnati Post: http://news.cincypost.com/apps/pbcs....=/20050726/NEWS02/507260388/-1/all

Interesting info:

http://news.cincypost.com/apps/pbcs....=/20050723/NEWS01/507230343/-1/all

A major in the Marine Corps Reserves, attorney and resident of Indian Hill, the 43-year-old Hackett describes himself as a moderate Democrat and does not share Democratic party views on gun control, among other issues.

"I don't feel beholden to the Democratic or Republican Party because in some cases they both have it wrong," Hackett said.

Hackett said people vote Republican because they want to protect their right to own arms, but don't realize that they are giving up other personal freedoms.

Hackett, who owns assault rifles himself, supports timely background checks on gun purchasers, but disagrees with gun registration.

Do you really live in the South? Most of the personal injury lawyers around here aren't Democrats. Most of them lean toward the conservative side on all issues other than their means of making a living.

Not really . . . there are some fairly honest schmoes in the jobs up here. Problem is - Alaska has such a small population, and on many occasions, we know each other to one extent or another. And as a consequence of being a small (population-wise) state, many of the politicians have had their hands in business dealings. Alaska has very, very strict ethics laws.

Now if we can get rid of this lunatic in the Governor's mansion, we'll be in heading in the right direction. We've a few State Legislators - I won't mention benny Boy Stevens (R-AK) (son of US Senator Ted Stevens) or Ethan Berkowitz (D-AK) by name - that could use a good ass kickin'!

Wish Governor Hickel would run again. But hell, he's like 85 now . . .  Sad

As a Marine, and as a gun owning citizen I am happy for him. I think the Democrats have gone way over the left-side of the ball park, and this moderate may help reel them in. I'm all for him. While myself I am a republican, I am tired of the whole "You're not American" if you don't vote Republican attitude. Diversity in opinion, wants, goals, choices etc is what has helps make this country what it is, so I hope he goes places.

GOP definitely can't play the "anti-war, anti-military" card on this guy, cause he's done more than most of them!!

Maybe if he's elected president he can get the Corps an actual replacement for the CH-46's so we aren't lugging around gallons of hydraulic fluid  Smile I think we're on like year 23 of the V-22 program...

Well, it shows me one thing: people there don't vote common sense. They vote party, and nothing else. Listening to these two for a while, Hackett seemed to the much more deserving. Shows Southern Ohio keeps up it's title for "Redneck North". They're beyond hope in that area.

RE: A Real Guy Runs On The Dem Ticket In Ohio

What's really interesting is that Hackett actually won Brown, Adams, Pike and Scioto counties. Of course, the majority of the population is in the Cincinnati metro counties - the Bush stronghold - and that's where Schmitt won.

Yeah, like I'm laughing, James. I'm right on on this one. Those people are so beholden to ideology down there, they'll never see the light of day agian.

Oh I don't doubt that you are right...I just thought this was funny coming from you

Well, it shows me one thing: people there don't vote common sense.

People with common sense don't last as politicians. They want to do all sorts of silly things like change things, represent real people and make government actually work for the people. That's why we need unrepresentative special interest groups to hold our politicians hands, tell them how great they are and make it look as if they are actually achieving something whilst doing nothing. That's what makes a modern democracy work.  Smile

Why is that comment "funny" coming from Falcon84?
Falcon84 is a conservative Democrat whom I butt heads with a lot. I am way more liberal than he is.
Falcon84 mentioned before on these boards that he voted for Republicans such as DeWine & Voinovich.
The only Republican I voted for was a Cannabis Club owner who ran for the GOP gubernitorial nomination in 1998.

That doesn't suprise me.
The attitude there among the majority W.A.S.P. voters in that region is that 'we are better than the colored folks in Cinncinati'.
Keep in mind, the KKK held rallies in Cinncinati city proper until the last few years.
The lines are more apparent in the suburbs of Hamilton County than the eastern part of district #2.
I know many transplants out here from Cinncinati (CVG) both Black and White and none of them have anything positive to say about that area.

True story:
Years ago when I was in college, I worked at a mortgage company part time and I set up 2nd. mortgages for homeowners with various lenders around the United States.
Well I spoke to a what seemed to be a very sweet older lady that wanted to add her & her husband's yacht as a 2nd. mortgage. She was so proud of this yacht of there's and couldn't understand why some people complained about the Swastika and Iron Cross flags they had hanging from there yacht!
She mentioned that other members of there 'yacht club' had Clover Leafs and British Union Jacks hanging from there yachts celebrating there heritege and wanted teh same respect for here Swastika.

Low in behold she lived in Norwood, Ohio which is the most racist redneck part of the Cinncinati metro area.

This doesn't suprise me that a under-qualified low-class Republican pieces of $h!t like Schmitt would win in this district, particularly in the populated suburbs in Cinncinati metro.

What a dissapointment. She ran a pretty dirty campaign and won. I honestly feel the less qualified person won this.

Well, with the Bolton shame, I've voted for Voinovich for the last time.  Smile

I don't feel I'm a "conservative Democrat". I feel I'm very centrist. I've called myself "center-left" before.

As for the outcome, apparently, according to an article I read at Cleveland.com, from the Plain Dealer, the Democrats are absolutely giddy this morning with the showing they had in the race.

They haven't even been competitive in that district for years, what with all the hillbillies and Rednecks down there, but they almost pulled off a win. Hackett is going back to Iraq for another tour, while Schmitt will risk nothing and sit in Washington.

I don't think you've heard the last of this guy. I think you'll see him run for a more state-wide office in '06 or '08, and he'll have broader appeal outside the blindly conservative areas of Cincinnati.

Btw, gotta love him calling Bush a "Chickenhawk". ROTFL!

Far righties like you always say something is overrun with "leftist liberals" (aren't they the same to you?). And what is a "yellow dog voting Democrat"? That one has me scratching my head, James.

Are you saying Democrats are cowards? This guy in isn't-he's served in Iraq. His opponent roots on the war from the safety of his home-kind of like you do.

An explaination of that ignorant statement is in order.
