Mumbai India, Telephone Lines?

Fri Jul 29, 2005 6:41 pm

I figured I might as well ask here, does anybody live in Mumbai India? Are the telephone down, how are things over there? I am trying to contact somebody overhere with no luck.

I know it must be pretty silly asking this question on the internet, if the lines, probably so is the internet?

My colleague at the next desk has been speaking to her Aunt on the phone there, as she is stranded due to the airport being closed.

So some phone lines are definitely working - but that may of course not be the case for the whole city.

Mike, I live in Bombay.

Most landlines in the city were down for several days. Since they rely on underground cables, they were severely distrupted because of the flooding.

Mobile networks, whilst not necessarily down, were jammed. That's not surprising, since even the homeless, beggars and vagrants have mobile phones these days!

That said, the southern part of the city, where I live, was largely unaffected. It did rain a lot, certainly, but I only found out about the havoc when a friend called, asking to stay over.

If your friend's phone number starts with one of these, you should be able to reach him/her:

91.22.22XX.XXXX
91.22.23XX.XXXX
91.22.3XXX.XXXX
91.98.XXXX.XXXX

Anything else will still be a hit-or-miss.

All the best!

My* Company's operations in Pune were affected, but everything seems to be back in order now.

*The company I work for, not own.

The separation was not much.
