Another SoCal Picture Thread

Sat Jul 30, 2005 8:49 am

All pictures were taken today. My travels today basically took me to the ends of the world and back. And as I always do now, I carried my camera with me. So I figured I'd snap a bunch of pictures while on the road of the different places I went today.

Enjoy.

Here I am, heading westbound on Interstate 10, approaching Downtown LA.

And the usual crawl at the point where the 10 and the 101 meet up.

Heading right through the heart of Downtown on the 101.

Perhaps the three most "touristy" streets in all of SoCal. I exited Santa Monica Blvd, to pick up a few things at a pro audio store in West Hollywood. I would've taken pictures, but that street demands your full attention. If I had a passenger, I would've had him or her take pix.

Heading back east towards home, it looks like there's going to be some monsoon activity out in the low desert. Just take a gander at these thunderheads off in the distance. Maybe tomorrow, I'll head out towards Palm Springs and Indio and do a little storm chasing. Anyway, this is now on the Eastbound 10, right around the Upland/Ontario border, approaching Euclid Ave. (duh)

...and the Montclair Mall, which is about 3 miles west of Euclid Ave. There's going to be some lightning and rainpour about 50 miles east of here!

Vineyard Ave, the exit to Ontario Airport. Interestingly, unlike most of the airports I've been to, ONT isn't really all that visible from the freeway. The offramp itself, plus buildings and trees obscure most of the view from anyone passing on the 10 in either direction.

The Crossroads of the Inland Empire. Eastbound I-10 at the I-15 junction, about 3 miles east of Ontario Airport.

http://x-2000r.angelcities.com/images/InlandCrossroads.JPG

Heading south on the 15 between Mira Loma and Norco. Picture faces roughly southeast.

Hmm..decisions decisions......Would one continue heading south on the I-15, which is where this shot was taken, and eventually get to Americas Finest City, or do I endure the logjam on the Westbound 91, the gateway to Orange County, home to some of Californias finest beaches and highest priced real estate......or....go east on the 91 to....Rivertucky...I mean Riverside?

Of course.....

Those cumulonimbus clouds look awesome. I like these photograph threads, Matt.

Someone should make a thread about how they went to the store or something. Maybe I'll do that with my cell phone camera.  scratchchin

MattD,

I love it. I'm heading back out to LA in three weeks after a year and a half back in Boston, and this is exactly what I needed to see to get excited again. I was looking forward to it a few weeks ago, then that initial excitement wore off.

Anyway, most photos are spots I've passed by many times, and look forward to again. In the photo facing southeast from the 15, are those the Jurupa Hills? I Have family that lives in Fontana, right next to those.

Gotta love that whole downtown interchange, huh? The 10, the 101, the 110, the 60, the 5 within a few miles. Better be in the correct lane.

When I looked at these pictures, I realized how much I miss the LA area and California in general! I spent a wonderful time there (mostly on the road, thus I liked the pics) and I think that my next aim will be to spend my summer holidays there again next year.

pretty cool! I've never been to LA, but hope to soon. I wish more people posted random non-av trip reports like that.

I see those cars are jammed on the 15 North to 91 West fly-over as usual. Sigh...I miss the days when there was never a traffic jam in this area.

Wow, every time I see pictures like that, it just reminds me how much I love Northern California.

Norco is a separate city directly north of Corona. I think its name derives from "North Corona." The city prides itself on its rural nature (calls themselves "Horse Town USA") and it's VERY true. Crossing the city limits from Corona to Norco is like going back in time about 60 years. Very recently, citizens voted on growth curbing measures to keep it much less populated than it's neighbor, which is starting to approach 200,000.

Oh you say it's a city....I say it's a state of mind!

Much like a Camaro (with mismatched door panels) weaving along the Riverside Freeway, driving hell-for-leather to the local swap meet. Bottle-blonde mother, cigarette dangling from lower lip, reaches around to curse and smack toddlers fighting in back seat, while nursing hangover from last night's beer blast.

That, my friend, IS the Inland Empire.

Matt,

Do you remember years ago when the Montclair Plaza used to be a one-story mall with only ground level parking? I actually worked for about 3 months at an old Kinney's shoe store there back right out of college around 1984 while I was hunting for my first aviation job. There was a restaurant next to one of the entrances called the Jolly Roger. Some good eats there growing up!

That inbound drive into L.A. on the San Bernardino Freeway hasn't changed a bit either, from when I was commuting to Vermont and Wilshire for my first aviation job with L.A. County's Aviation Division.

It also looks like you had one of the less hazy days for your drive.

If you don't mind, I'll include some pics from our visit in June (had a great time - can't beat 75 and sunny in the summer):

near Camarillo (Ventura County)

Oceanside (North of San Diego)

US 101 near downtown LA

Anacapa Island (Channel Islands)

Ronald Reagan Library (Simi Valley)
