Palmeiro The Latest Cheater (?)

Tue Aug 02, 2005 2:18 am

Falcon recently posted a thread about whether Rafael Palmeiro was Ahll-of-Fame material. I said he was a first ballot shoo-in. I may have to retract that statement and hope that he doesn't get a single vote. He certainly has the numbers, but apparently someone has been putting anabolics in his Viagra or something:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseb...05-08-01-palmeiro-suspension_x.htm

"In remarks prepared for a conference call Monday, Palmeiro said he had accepted his punishment and could not explain how the steroids got into his body. " rotfl

I suppose we should give him just enough slack to hang himself; perhaps there is something mysterious going on, but how the heck do you prove whether he really hasn't intentionally taken them?

He knows he has been taking them and had hoped to not get caught. The worse is not for himself, but that the team and their fans will be hurt by his choice. This is the biggest player caught in the new testing regimine and hope it scares others for considering or contninue using such drugs. The long term health problems from these drugs is the best reason to ban them. (of course this is good news for Boston, Yankees).

It's interesting to hear... while I wasn't sure whether Palmeiro took some 'roids or not, it makes me wonder if I should read Jose Canseco's book. I don't respect that guy at all, but I mean he came out with the book and started talking about all these accusations of people juicing up (Palmeiro among them) and I thought it was a load of crap. Just another guy looking to make and honestly dishonest buck. But, that book is starting to look interesting. I'll reiiterate that I don't think Canseco is a quality individual at all. I seriously question the man's integrity, and I don't support his "oh what the hell, just juice up anyhow" position, but it makes you wonder to a point whether or not he was telling the truth in that book (at least on WHO was juicing up).

What is it with guys like him and Barry Bonds who do nothing but deny deny deny? Do they really expect the public at large to believe a @!&^&&***( story like that?

This sucks...not a Palmeiro fan or anything but he always seemed like the quiet guy that just piled up numbers. Sad to see. This is the type of crap that's causing me to lose more and more interest in pro sports...this stuff combined with whiny players and owners is really getting old.

Interestingly, Palmeiro testified quite vehemently to Congress that he had not used them. Now, he could make the argument that he had not used them ever up until that time, and just decided to start taking them after the Congressional hearings.  crazy

So, he lied to Congress, but they can't prove that.

The Orioles were in free-fall mode anyway. This just puts them over the edge.

Being an O's fan, I have to agree. I was optimistic with the killer lineup they have (even without Palmeiro) but when the year began, realistically, I didn't think they had the best chance to even win the wild card spot with that pitching staff of theirs. Erik Bedard is decent and B.J. Ryan is good, but look at the rest... you're not going to win with Daniel Cabrera as one of your top 3 starters.... a number 5 MAYBE, and even that's a remote chance.

A 10-day suspension? What a joke. Aside from the image factor, this is hardly a deterrent. If MLB ever starts to demand real accountability from the players they might start to chip away at the problem. The fact that the player's union has any say in this issue minimizes the legitimacy of the entire policy.

If he used them in the past, fine. It was dumb, but whatever. Now he KNOWS they're looking to bust someone and is STILL juicing. Dude deserves at least a 25-gamer for his stupidity alone.

Couldn't agree more. I gave up on pro-sports about three years ago, and this kind of shit just reaffirms my decision. There are so many better ways to spend time and money than watching drug-induced athletes impress people who are paying $8-10 for a beer and almost as much for a hot dog.

I've heard several people say that minor league games are much better value in terms of price and that there isn't the "big league" mentality...more of a "game" if you will. Locally, the Everett Silvertips have done really well in drawing new fans, and a lot of locals like Tacoma Rainiers and Everett Aquasox games, instead of spending a small fortune to watch the flailing Mariners.
And the winner for best actress is....REESE WITHERSPOON for 'Walk the Line'!!!!!!!!

They should test Giambi again. The whole season he wasn't hitting anything now all of a sudden he has 14 homeruns in one month!

And look how long it took for the players' union to agree such feable penalties with the likes of Schilling saying he didn't think that steroids provided an advantage.

Rafael,

I'm so disappointed in you. I never liked watching baseball on TV, but everytime you came to bat, I stopped and watched.

In 1999, when I was in Cleveland and the Rangers came to play the Indians, I took extra call back to back so I could come out and see you play.

I considered you one of the game's upstanding citizens and a role-model.

I loved it that even though you moved to Baltimore (twice), you still kept your official home in the DFW area.

Say it isn't so, Raffy!!

It is. He's a cheater. A scumbag. His 3,000 hits and ~500 home runs mean NOTHING.

He cheated. He sucks. Forget Rafael Palmeiro. He fucked up. He cheated. He's a worthless piece of shit.

Bye, Raffy.  whistleblower

I hope the fans in Baltimore booo his ass off the field. The Orioles are done, having lost 12 of 13. The only thing they can do is put this guy on a cross and crucify him.

I agree- he'll cry his alligator tears, apologize, beg for forgiveness, still get paid millions, probably get into Cooperstown (even though he shouldn't) and all will roll on.

It's disgusting. But the fans keep opening up their wallets...

I'm not saying that he never accidentally took anything that is now under scrutiny, but Palmeiro has been anything but honest and completely forthright throughout his entire career. If he says that he never intentionally doped, then he didn't.

And I'd rather live anywhere in Mississippi than in Crapchester, KROC.

What is he, your Uncle? You can't be any more sure that he didn't use 'roids than I can be sure that he did. These tests are designed to minimize false positives, as the consequences are obviously damning. Another player, from Seattle, was also suspended today. Are you just as sure that he didn't use them?

And multiple pro ball players, including guys like John Kruk find it a crock of horse hockey that anyone could unintentionally take steroids due to the information passed onto them as to what things contain certain substances that would test positive for juice.

I'd be willing to bet that Palmiero is just the tip of the iceberg.

If every starter on every team was tested without warning, I'd bet at least 30% would test positive. Juicing has been going on for years, and only now is the reality coming to light.
