South Africa Status

Tue Aug 02, 2005 7:17 am

Hi guys, I would like to know the current status of South Africa, about relations between whites and non-whites in politics and in life.

Googling around, I have found plenty of historical documentation about apartheid, but very few of them tell about what is South Africa NOW.

For example, is it common for a white girl to marry a black man?
Or, do "black people" live in the same suburb of "white people"?

Sorry if those are stupid questions!

Not stupid questions at all! I haven't been there for years (just before apartheid ended) and even then blacks were moving in to the white suburbs, so I assume it's advanced much further than that now. I remember buses being officially segregated, but that seemed to depend on the bus driver as you'd see the odd black person on a white bus.

I'm sure some of the South African a.netters will give you a much more comprehensive run-down of the situation now, but I'm pretty sure that there is equality across the board. The only barrier to blacks moving to a white area would be an economic one.

Interestingly, it is the only country in the world where I have heard mixed-race people described as "coloured".
