Televised Poker: Enough Already!

Wed Aug 10, 2005 10:04 am

Not too long ago I considered reality TV to be the worst thing to happen to TV. Now it has been trumped by this plague. Hockey can't get a national contract, but at any given time, you can find several poker games on. Hate it!!
Does anyone here watch this crap?

Not me. Looks like nothing but worthless drivel for folks who are gambling addict wannabes. They should follow my new 4-step process.

I find it kind of interesting to watch while I'm drinking. When you're half-drunk and can't focus on anything too closely; a nice game of Texas Hold'em on ESPN 2 is somewhat entertaining. I can't stand the movie stars "celebrity" poker crap. But the big names in poker sitting down is pretty good. "Jesus" Ferguson for example; that guy is fun to watch.

I still don't understand how ESPN, being a SPORTS network, televises poker games. I can proudly say I'm one of those that never got into the whole poker fad.

No hockey season = lots of airtime to fill.

TV Poker is a fad. It hit me, but I am no longer watching it. I do play occasionally, but I don't watch it anymore.

I certainly hope this fad is losing steam. But part of me dreads the next one!

The TV market is just about at full capacity with poker. The final straw will be when The Gameshow Network starts realtime play with on-line wagering.

Golf is actually a better spectator sport than poker.

I really wish this crap would go away... They need to show more of the hot asian who plays pool... Or at least she looked hot on a tv in a bar the other day.

I agree on both accounts. I cannot stand when I am looking for something on T.V. and poker is not only on ESPN and ESPN 2 but its also on the Travel Channel, the Learning Channel, FX etc.

The game has been over-televised for the past 2-3 years. Another dividend of the problem is that every casino in Vegas has started to grow their poker rooms, or add one if they didn't have one.

The result is that the game is diluted with total idiots who disrupt what once was a challenging, exciting game. You spend half your time, even at higher-limit tables, trying to sheriff aggressive players who seem to have total disregard for pot odds. In the end, they're going to make foolish moves, but cut lucky on the cards.

Yeah, its the game, but its not how it was meant to be played.

They also have those lame spelling bees every year. Who cares. I don't consider golf a sport, but a lot of people do, so I can let that one slide. Pretty soon ESPN may be like the MTV of sports-Music Television that doesn't play music.  Yeah sure

I love televised poker. The more people who watch, the more who play and the more who play, the more who give me their money.

The hot asian pool player is the "Black Widow" - Janette Lee. I played against her a couple of years ago when she was giving an exhibition locally. Very nice lady, and eye-candy too. Currently she is ranked 4th in the world, behind Allison Fisher, Karen Corr, and Ga Young Kim. Allison is a snooke player form the UK, came to the states to play 9-ball, and has been number one for quite some time. Quite attractive as well.

I wish to declare that the Poker Fad is about to be over.

The true sign that a fad has reached it's climax is when there are classes at the Senior Citizens' Centers on the subject. The local ones here are offering poker classes, so that means the fad is about to drop.

As for the poker rooms at casinos, they took them out in the early 1980s (in the case of the older casinos) or never had them in the design at all. In the older casinos, the poker rooms were replaced with more slots (heck, 25 years ago there was more floor space in casinos dedicated to table games than slots), and now some of those machines are being pulled out to put in a poker room, or they are cutting back on other gaming spaces (like sportsbooks), in not only the older casinos, but the newer ones as well. Now that they've added them, the fad will be on the downward trend, which will suit many of the oldtimers, who hate the fact that many of these hotshot newbies think they're a poker master because they do well online (They don't mind taking these folks money, but hate they whole "cool" factor poker has become.).

I play the occassion play money poker online, I'm not much of a poker fan, it's fun to play from time to time. I have no intentions to ever sit down at a casino and play poker. I prefer blackjack and craps, mainly because you don't have some retard saying "all-in" every 3 or 4 hands, plus they're more social games.
