Israel's Gaza Withdrawal - It Starts Tonight

Mon Aug 15, 2005 2:25 am

In less than 4 hours, at 00:00 GMT+2, the Kisufim checkpoint, the main entrance to the Gaza Strip will be closed for inbound traffic, thus officially starting the complete Israeli pull out of Gaza.

The entire process is expected to take more than a month, starting with removal of all Jewish settlements that are populated with 8000 people. Many of those have already left, yet many others arrived as a sign of protest.

Palestinian police has taken positions in front of IDF troops in order to help securing the move from possible terror attacks. IDF officials have warned the Palestinian ones that any significant terror activity during the pull out will result in a massive IDF operation that will occupy all of the Gazan territory.

Lets hope that things will go according to plan, without any major incidents/violence...
I have heard that the settlers will be housed in/near Nizanim park, is that true?
Will it be temporary or permanent?

Yep, temporarily and only those who don't have a housing solution this far.

I really, really hope all goes well and no nutjob from either side disrupts this process.

In the news I just watched, I saw Jerusalem (old part) being blocked off and Jewish people celebrating a holiday at the Wailing Wall. They interviewed an Israeli hardliner who compared Sharon to Roman emperor Titus and then showed some Palestinians gathering to "defend" the al-Aqsa Mosque from Jewish hardliners who purportedly were trying to access it.

Oh please, people, get real. The world could really use it.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

What really sickens me are those hardliners who seriously compare the pull out to the Shoah - truly one distasteful comparison.

Uh oh, CNN's front page is now reporting violence in Gaza. I can't say I'm surprised.

this has happened before, in fact, there were some extremist Jews who were trying to shoot a small hand missle at the Dome of The Rock..but they were caught...and there have been other cases where extremist Jews were attempting to access the al-Aqsa Mosque..

"Violent opposition

Soon after the Israeli army declared the formal start to the pullout operation, furious settlers smashed car windows and set fire to tyres early on Monday. "

So? Did they kill or injure anybody? No. They have their right of protest. Although I overwhelmingly support pullout of occupied territories I do understand that many of them lived there for a long time and their kids don't know any other home. Some feelings are understandable. The problem lies in a small group of zealots, many of whom have infiltrated into the settlements illegaly.

They have their right of protest, but when you start smashing cars and burning tyres, you're damaging property, regardless of whether or not anyone is killed or injured. That's wrong, no matter which way you slice it.

Jewish people celebrating a holiday at the Wailing Wall

They were not celebrating a holiday. Yesterday was Tisha BeAv (The ninth of Av - the fifth month of the Jewish lunar calendar). For religious Jews it's a day of fasting and praying - in commemoration of the fall of the first(King's Solomon) and the second (Herod's) temples - that fell at the same day, the first one to Babylonians and the second one to Romans. The Wailing Wall in Jerusalem is actually the only surviving part of Herod's temple - its western outer wall.

And if they aren't quiet afterwards they will be endangering the process of building of the Palestinian state.

Can you stop somebody from damaging his/hers own property?

Oh, and nobody mentioned that remaining residents of other settlements came under fire from Palestinian militants. (Source: CNN)

If they want to be "within their rights", they should be smashing their own windows and burning their own tires. Somehow, I doubt that is what is happening.

No, you can't. However, AFAIK, 99% of the time, people tend to smash other people's stuff when they're pissed and rioting, not their own. Unless I see something that says that this is different, I have to go with the general human pattern.

it is a START, but whenever only a start, my congratulations to the Israeli leadership who found the courage to get it through !

There of course later on come the matters of the WestBank and of EastJerusalem, the Capital of Palestine, where many many many details are to be ironed out.

This is exactly where you are wrong here.
Normally people don't destroy their own property because they need it, they will continue to use it.
In the GS it is not the case. They won't continue to live in their houses. They don't need anything they can't get out and some decided to destroy it. I don't have any problems with that. I don't know why they decided to set up a car on fire and not get it out, but it is their right.

Amazing, you don't understand what is going on (actually, it is not that amazing)
