Back At Work After Holidays, What's Your Timeline?

Mon Aug 15, 2005 2:38 pm

So I am back at my trusty desk after 18 days of wanderlust; I just cleaned out my inbox, turned off the Out-of-Office thingy, next up is checking the other mailboxes and all the Dilberts I missed  Wink

What are the first things you do upon returning to work from a lengthy holiday ?

I hope you enjoyed your honeymoon in Thailand !

Apart form the "inbox & outofoffice-thing" I usually consult my coworkers for any new developments (birthdays, sick people, new company rules etc.).
Only after then I´ll browse through my 2 ft of papers piled in my physical inbox Big grin

"Holiday" aka. "Vacation" is a thing that should last for 365 days per year but it usually is inadvertently interrupted by brief periods of work assigments Big grin

I have to check up on whats new within our roles, any security procedures that may have changed and catch up on the gossip within the team I work with. We also have to check any changes that would affect our day-to-day routine like sending faxes to other departments. After that and being back on the phone for 5 miutes, it feels like you've never been away from the place.
Why drive when you can fly?

I took 3 weeks off in June and went off to South Beach. I'll tell you that getting back to the swing of work and the office was one of the hardest things ever!! OK, I can be overly dramatic, but that first night heading home on the subway (tube), I was almost in tears longing for the beach, the ocean and the boys.... in fact, many weeks later now, and I still do long for those holiday days.

So, take it easy on your first few days back. Daydream alot, and go to expedia.com and plan your next holiday.

Holiday... Isn't that when everybody else rests while I have to work?

Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

Ah yes, a holiday.

Well, the main reason I left my last employer was that I had worked 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week for 19 weeks solid without a single day off.

Now I got into IT for two main reasons, money and an easy life. 12 hour shifts are what I would class as working for a living, and if I wanted to work for a living I would have gotten a real job in the first place!  Smile

Thankfully my new job pays a bit more than my last one, and best of all I get 75 days of paid holiday time, and 15 days of public holidays to take every year - that's more like it.  Silly

Regards,
Gordon.
Statistically, people who have had the most birthdays tend to live the longest.

And it's paid for, if I might add.
