Highway Tolls

Sat Aug 20, 2005 6:43 am

Coming home from wisconsin today... i noticed that we (the people who reside in Illinois) have high tolls! We were wonderfully greeted with a $1.50 for entering the state and then just before merging onto the Edens Expwy (I94) we're slapped with a another toll of $1.00.

Most tolls are 80 cents but for those who have I-Pass (equiv. to EZ-Pass) get to pay 50 cents....

I can understand the Penn. Turnpike or the NY Thruway even the GSP and the NJTPK...and the Mass Pike ... but Illinois? must they charge you 80 cents for every 15-20 miles you go?

Illinois Tolls charge you a dollar to leave the state (if headed to WI, IA, IN) followed by a sign that says "Thanks for using the Illinois Tollways" should I be thankful for paying $2.50 to use tolls? or even $3.40? yeah i realise its for construction but is I-DOT (Illinois D.O.T) wasteful on money to require people pay 80 cents per toll.

I dont have I-Pass because i ( my family) rarely uses the highways... and besides why not charge 75c instead of 80. who has time to go fiddling for 3 quarters and a nickel or 2 quarters and 3 dimes or 1 quarter 6 dimes and 3 nickels?

Well I sure don't feel sorry for you.

Up here in Toronto Canada, we have a single toll road called the 407ETR. It captures your tolls with an electronic transponder (which you rent for $21 per year) and you pay 14.95 Cents PER Kilometer. (about .24 cents per MILE)

If you drive the entire 107 kilometer distance of the toll road (about 68 miles) it will cost you $16.04. Now that's high tolls.

As a matter of principle, I refuse to pay that much and take alternative routes.

How are these any different? If I travel the entire length of the PA Turnpike, it costs well over $100. The thruway is a bit cheaper, but has shittier roads. The NJTP can go to hell. The collectors they have should all have their booth ran into by a drunk driver.

I cant believe that that fuckhead Blagojevich increased tolls for non I-Pass users by 2x. I hate that Democrat with passion. The Ohare toll on the Kennedy is where I get raped for $1.00

Thats actually not right. They pay .40c on a normal toll just like before. Wherever you see standard toll for non-Ipass such as 50c or $1.50, I-pass users pay half.

Ridiculous I agree. I dont have I-Pass because no way in hell will I support those 2 pieces of shit Daley and Blagoejevich in their democrat undertakings. Construction my @$$. They put up those tolls 30 years ago and were only supposed to be there for 5 years to pay off the roads. Instead they have been there since then.

BTW this is chump change if you ever been on a French highway! Talk about socialist Europe!  Silly

I know it sucks but it is just the direction the world is going now. You should try to see it this way:

Using a highway is no longer like using public amenities. It is more like a luxury. If you want to use it you can, but you must pay. If you don't want to use it, you can use the narrower free roads where all the other people who don't want to pay, drive.

Charging for the use of highways and congested areas is on of the only ways to reduce congestion and create income for further development of transport be it directly into roads, or into other modes of public transport, which in turn improves the system as a whole. And if you have a closer look, you'll find it works. At least here it does. I am not going to finger point, but if you have a look at where you need to pay and where you don't need to pay, you'll find that where you don't pay, there is always congestion. If I had the choice, I'd rather pay and drive without interruptions.

Obviously nobody would enjoy to pay for something that was previously offered to them for free, but look at the glass half-full instead. And hey, I know I have no knowledge of the area you are talking about, but it sounded like a rediculous amount of money. Look at what we pay to use roads/highways in the EU! Hope that makes you feel better  Wink

WRONG WRONG WRONG. The tolls in the state of Illinois around Chicago are served to pay for the bottomless pit of the Italian-Irish Democrat Construction mafia. The tollways in Illinois are in shit condition compared to non-tollways (the majority of interstates) And if you travel to Wisconsin just uo north where all interstates are free they are MUCH better paved and taken care for even in Madison and Milwaukee.

You obviously dont understand the tollways here. There is alot MORE congestion where there are tollways. The tolls here do not exactly RAPE you like in Europe so no one really cares much to avoid them. Honestly, anyone whos in Chicago right now should imagine I-90 without the O'hare toll at 5pm. VOILA! Traffic problem solved.

As I already said in my initial post, I have no clue about the area in question. I am talking about the concept behind it, and used examples where it works (i.e. London City, France Highways, Autobahn Vignettes) and examples where they don't use it and have congestead roads (Netherlands, Germany, and most other places where access is free). It could be that the concept is being "abused" there, but then again after seeing what you think of the politicians I take your post with a grain of seriousness only.

Perhaps the money is being invested in something you are not aware of, or perhaps it's not. Either way, it's still a rediculous amount of money to pay, so stop crying about it  Silly

Last week I travelled to Switzerland and had to pay EUR31 to use a 200km stretch of a French highway, and CHF40 for the Swiss highway vignette. Did I complain? NO! Because I didn't have to stop in traffic jams on the toll highways. I disagree with the French system where you have to stop to get the toll ticket because that slows you down a couple of minutes. Electronic systems are more accurately priced AND they let you drive through without interruptions.

I live in New Jersey, where we have 2 major toll roads, the NJ Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway as well as tolls on the several bridges/tunnels to go into NY City. There is no practical alternative to these roads, bridges and tunnels and they are generally well maintained. Problem is that the authorties that operate these roads become huge fifedoms with bloated workforces and overpaid managers. Originally, it was a way to pay for needed roads without imposing higher taxes for them. Now we also use tolls to regulate and reduce demand for access to roads in urbanized areas. Toll roads and bridges are nothing new, and the idea goes back hundreds of years to the colonial era in the USA and was the source the word 'turnpike' referring to the pole barrier at the enterence to private owned roads where one would pay their toll for use the road. I can only think of only one place where tolls were removed on a major highway, and that was the Connecticut Turnpike/I-95 a number of years ago.

I still have my place over in Sycamore (near NIU), so when I go back (even to visit my folks, even further away), we always take Manheim out of O'Hare to Irving Park to 83 South (toward where I grew up) or around to Devon towards the Elgin-O'Hare to 20 to 23 into Sycamore. There's ways around these tolls, of course, but - you're dead on right - with Blagojevich and Daley running the show, they'll keep salivating while residents keep forking over their wad to (unnecessarily) pay for these tolls.

You both, I'm sure, have heard of Roe Conn. He (and Garry, when I used to listen) would pound on Blags and (especially) Daley for the lack of necessity of the tolls. Roe was shooting out figures of how little of the money goes for the actual upkeep/construction of the roads (or towards the overhead, etc.) and how much better other places keep their roads w/o the use of tolls.

LOT767-300ER i wholeheartedly agree with you!!!! we are being raped with tolls... the E-W tollway is always clogged on saturdays when i go to Naperville to visit my aunt. I'm just happy that they removed the 294 Tolls going towards ORD but who the hell wants to pay for tolls on 190 to ORD?

Don't you love those signs that say - "I-Pass users, no toll increase"

Did you vote for Blagojevich?

When I lived in New Jersey, we didnt pay tolls to enter EWR. We just exited and sat in some kind of construction traffic and then that was it.

I remember on the day before thanksgiving, we were going to O'Hare (it snowed that day) and everyone was scrambling to find 80 cents. which moron thought of 80 cents. 50 cents is much better than 80.

I'm wondering what thrill they get when they see that every 10-15 miles drivers fork out between 80c-$1.00 in change for tolls. Daley and Blago cum in their pants everytime they make $500 in change

I dont understand why we voted for Blago? I mean he hasn't helped the state and Daley is as corrupt as Indian Politicians are...

I mean come on yesterday i paid a dollar in tolls to go 1 mile just to support this open tolling crap.

I must say though I90 in WI is more taken care of than I94 up in Madison. As we entered MKE, the roads were fine. The highlight of the trip yesterday was passing MKE and a sign that says: "Bong Recreational Area"

If Blagojevich wants more money then increase the tolls for I-Pass too! Some asshole in the IL Gov didnt think properly. Not everyone travels on the highways everyday so why dont they cut us a break? create us something special. Give us some special tag.

1. That whole Aurora 88 Interstate is in the shits right now! Did you see the construction there?

I don't pay tolls to enter EWR, unless you consider parking costs a toll.

Having just driven from Stone Harbor to Perth Amboy on the GSP, I have had more than enough tolls for one day. Most of the tolls there are .35 cents, but some are .70 cents, since they took some of the tolls out and installed high speed EZ-Pass, which I don't have. You can always tell who is from out of state by how they act entering and coming out of the tolls. I do it so much coming and going to the shore, it just becomes second nature.

I was at the Illinois Tollways website and there is no plan to get rid of tolls.. just more damn construction until 2012. more of our toll money to fund absolutely nothing...

oh and 88 should be expanded to 3 lanes not 2 How the hell can a tollway be 2 lanes... and no i dont need examples... its just the point is that we live in a corrupt state...

while im complaining... why are we being taxed 8.75% per dollar of everything we buy? In NJ, tax is 6% and gas is cheaper!

but uhh we all know about McGreevey and his scandal... makes me feel ashamed that i was living in NJ while he was a gov.

when I go to ORD, i take Dempster to 294 and then to 190. but ive seen traffic jammed on the merge to 190 from 294 and 90.

But it's true that prices shot up this week again. When I went to Switzerland last week I paid 87 cents for a litre of Diesel. One week later it's 93 cents for a litre.

And Luxembourg is still like one of the cheapest countries for fuel in the area!

oh its fun to sit there and watch to see if the gates at the toll booth will go up or will they not go up and piss off other drivers honking at you because you cant move because the gate wont go up.

I think the only fun I had going up to wisconsin last week was being able to go past my parents with my grandfather. we threw in change while they had to give them dollar bills... then my dad decided to switch lanes before the rest area that we'd said that we would all go to... my sister said that my dad was driving too fast so he pulled over and waited...

My mom enjoys playing lane tag. She's always changing lanes and as soon as your trying to follow her, she'll change back and then your stuck with slow people in front of you...

I live in Wisconsin and I got an Illinois I-Pass. I paid $50 up front; $10 for a deposit on the device and $40 prepaid toll. I go to Chicago or beyond maybe 10-15 times a year, but to me it's still well worth it, especially since they doubled the toll for cash users.
