But all joking aside, maybe your neighbor with the riding mower finds it easier/quicker to use it. Takes less time and hassle to mow his lawn and can get to more important tasks like spending time with their family. There are plenty of people that see yard work as pure drudgery and do not like it one bit.

The more I think about it, I also suspect that ride-on lawnmowers can be a suburban status symbol, possibly that helps account for their growing popularity.
