I too mourned the loss of Arrow 93 FM
. They turned into that "Jack" format.
I have mixed feelings on them.
On one hand, I do like their well rounded and eclectic format which apparently means that I am not alone in my musical tastes or utter disdain for the last decades or so offering of "Top 40" material.
But on the flip side, their actual presentation is what really stinks: their self-promotion is really sloppy and obnoxious. They have a habit of coming out of commercial and starting a song. They let it play for about 30 seconds, then they play a dozen 10 second snippets from other songs all spliced together before actually playing a whole song. It's that whole "gotcha" format, and to me, is really annoying as hell.
I think that
Jack really does have some untapped potential. But it's their attitude and presentation that needs to be cleaned up. Not their choice of material, of which I like about 75%, far higher than even the defunct
Arrow was able to achieve.
Now speaking of annoying radio, it would be difficult to top the LA
"News" station, KFWB AM
I used to listen to them quite frequently. But that's another station that's gone down the tubes. First, their number of commercials is simply out of control. They need to either stop being so damn greedy, or start upping their rates. They average about 9 minutes of commercial for every 20 minutes of airtime. And it's all staggered out: they'll do a couple of commercials. Then one or two news story summaries. Then a couple more commercials. Then another story or two. Then commercials. And so on.
And as if that weren't bad enough, 80% of their commercials seem to be of the "Home Mortgage/Loans" variety.
Now to add insult to injury, KFWB is another station that seems to be suffering from an identity crisis: are they a news station? Or a sports station.
Either one by itself is OK
. But they are trying to be both. And frankly, it stinks. Bad. Not only do you have to listen through commercial after commercial, but half the time, you don't even know if they're broadcasting news, or a Dodgers game.
And as if that
STILLM weren't bad enough, someone needs to tell their traffic reports manager that there are a lot more freeways in LA
than just the 101, the Santa Monica, and the Golden State.
Because those seem to prettu much be the only freeways they'll report on. There can be a sixteen car fatality on the 91 in Corona, causing a 6 hour backup all the way back to Long Beach, but they won't report it. Instead, they'll tell you that the 101 through North Hollywood is "wide open".
And that's even assuming they're reporting traffic. Like I said. Half the time, they aren't. They're broadcasting a Dodgers game.
Needless to say, KFWB has been 86'd from my radio dial.
Too much commercials. Too unreliable availability. And very limited coverage.
