The Official A.net Alcohol Thread

Thu Aug 25, 2005 11:08 pm

Well thought I'd start a thread for myself and other alcoholics. LHMark and well, I cant think of any others, come to mind.
So, Questions are:
1) Whats your favourite lager?
2) Can you name the difference between beer and lager?
3) How much do you drink in a night?

1. Brooklyn Dark Lager
2. I'm pretty sure its different in the way its brewed giving it a different consistancy
3. Well this week I've been drinkin Absolut every night this week, though I will be drinking Shiner this weekend, a nice Texas brew they started to sell out of state.

It's not your typical water beer. It's heavier. I'm gettin tired of the light beers.

1)Honey Brown
2)There is no difference in beer and lager. Lager is a type of beer, ale is the other. Lagers are fermented longer and at cooler temps than ale. Also, in a lager, the yeast does its work at the bottom of the mix, and in an ale the yeast works at the top.
3)6-8 beers and 6-8 Long Islands and/or Jager bombs.

And you?

1) Whats your favourite lager? Stella Artois, such a lovely pint  Wink

2) Can you name the difference between beer and lager?

The World's biggest category of beers, lagers are all brewed using lager yeasts that sink to the bottom of the brewing vessel. Brewed at a lower temperature than ales, they are stored (or lagered, from "lager" in German) for up to 6 weeks before being sold. Most mainstream American beers are lagers, as are most German beers.

3) How much do you drink in a night?
Depends, sometimes 5, sometimes 10, sometimes 15. More, when I'm at parties though.

1) Whats your favourite lager?

Depends what mood I'm in, usually Budweiser, Stella or the weird complimentary stuff they serve in Wetherspoons on Curry night.

2) Can you name the difference between beer and lager?

Lager is brewed using bottom-fermenting yeast, and at a colder temperature for longer. Beers are fermented using top-fermenting yeasts, and heated during fermentation to between 15 and 25 degrees, and brewed for shorter periods than lagers.

3) How much do you drink in a night?

Depends, if I'm only out for a quick session at lunchtime then usually 4 or 5 pints, on a night out (i.e. a drinking session) I usually drink about 3 pints an hour, and generally drink for about 4 - 5 hours.
Statistically, people who have had the most birthdays tend to live the longest.

1. I try not to, at least in public anyway. Coors Light is passable if push came to shove.

2. I don't class lager as beer! Lager is the fizzy stuff you get from the electric pumps; beer is the stuff you get hand pulled from barrels. Beer in this sense being real ale rather than the catch-all lager.

3. On a drinking night, maybe 6-8 pints in public, less if drinking at home.

See you at the Bath beer festival in October - I'll be behind (and under) the bar!

1) I stick to the US Domestic brews... Miller High Life, and Bud. Not much on lagers or dark ales. Although I do like Lowenbraue(sp) and Hieneken a lot too

2) BAB got the differences correct, or lack of differences as it were.

3) After work, we stop by the local "do-drop-in" for a few. Usually I'll have a couple beers, and a couple shots of tequila. If I'm not in a mood for beer, I'm known to have a few bourbon on the rocks... Preferably Jim Beam.

Quoting Gkirk (Thread starter):
1) Whats your favourite lager?

It's a tie between Newcastle and Stella.

Quoting Gkirk (Thread starter):
3) How much do you drink in a night?

Depends on my purpose that night. If I'm trying to get drunk, about 6 Newcastles will have me feeling pretty good. When I was in college still, I would probably drink 6-9 a night, and feel fine. I can't drink like I used to.

Quoting AA61Hvy (Reply 1):
1. Brooklyn Dark Lager

Whatever.

Quoting Gkirk (Thread starter):
1) Whats your favourite lager?

Usually I drink wheat beer and pils but when I have to choose a favourite lager I would say Stella and Foster's.

Quoting Gkirk (Thread starter):
2) Can you name the difference between beer and lager?

Another brewing process, don't know the details though.

Quoting Gkirk (Thread starter):
3) How much do you drink in a night?

It depends, within the week much less than on weekends. Sometimes 4 on an evening, sometimes 14 on an evening when I am on a party. My record is 20 (a whole case of Erdinger 0.5 liter bottles), a buddy and I bought a case for each of us, we started at 7 PM and finished the 20th bottle at 6 AM on the following morning (and beside we even smoked a substance which contains THC).

What?  Wow!

Warsteiner Dunkel isn't available here in Germany but once I heard that many other German breweries do also brew dark beers only for the export market, Beck's and Holsten for example.

In my opinion is everything what comes from the Warsteiner brewery just nasty. Their Pils is the most disgusting I ever drunk and easily the worst beer which is available in Germany, it is really beyond me that so many people are drinking that piss.

Warsteiner pils is pretty mediocre mass-market beer, about as good as Becks. But the Dunkel we get here is surprisingly good. Dry, roasty malt flavor with just enough hops to take the edge of the sweet aftertaste. We'll get you some if you come stateside next spring.

I think that Beck's is better than Warsteiner. By the way, did you ever noticed that Beck's is tasting different in Germany and abroad (even than the Beck's that LH is serving)? A buddy and I once took a bottle from a LH plane and compared the tast with a Beck's from a bottle we bought in a local supermarked, the difference is not big but you can taste it.

1. Samuel Adams Boston Lager
2. What style are you using for "beer". A lager is a bottom fermented beer, often brewed at a colder temperature than an ale, which is a top fermented beer brewed at a warmer temperature.
3. I'm not the drinker I used to be a few years back. These days when I go out I may knock back at most 4-6 drinks. I lost count of how much I had on St. Patrick's Day. I believe I had 6-8 beers and 2 shots of Bushmills over the course of about 3 hours. I had a pretty wicked hangover the next day, what made it worse was I had to be at work at 5 am that morning.

1), 2) & 3) - Who cares... As long as it gets me drunk. Sometimes a guy (or gal) can't afford to be picky.
On a bit of a mission as I type this. Drinking some unpleasant Belgium stuff called Chimay. An ale, in case anyone cares. I guess it was concocted by Trappist Monks in Chimay Abbey in Belgium. I always wondered what those dudes did to pass the time... All that isolation and oaths of silence n stuff. Although, I suspect that's a topic for another thread.
After this is finished I'll hit the Prince Igor. It ain't no Absolut, but I got bonus air miles for my purchase... And that's a good thing.

cheers

2. Beer is the cheap way and general way to say Lager/Pilsner
3. I've gotten a taste for Smirnoff Twists. Sambuca is pretty nice too. (I mostly drink for the taste, not to get wasted). So a few shots each time I drink (usually once a week maybe)

This has in some cases legal reasons.. in some countries, a maximum of x % (x is around 4) qualifies a beer to be in a low tax group (i.e. the not-hard spirits group). Hence the modification - but they would not rebrand it for known reasons. And some other laws, too

1) Big Rock (here in Alberta) makes some damned good beer. Unfortunately, I'm not much of a lager fan...I like Grasshopper Wheat Ale and McNally's Extra Ale.

2) Been said above - lager is bottom brewed, ale is top brewed. Up until about 150-200 years ago, there was no difference between these, however. It was all ale, and that's it.

3) If i'm not flying within 12 hours, I'll usually have one or so beer(s) a night. On the weekend, or if I'm not flying for a few days, the number goes up until I go down.

Like Ms. Harlot, I can't stand beer. In tequila, I prefer Lapis. My favorite vodka is Ketel One (thanks to Logan22L for that pocketbook-busting suggestion  Yeah sure), or Absolut if I'm feeling cheap. I also love a good dark rum... Bacardi isn't bad, or Captain Morgan.

I still do not understand why you named yourself after a terrorist attack.

ps: LH should offer Oettinger on bord service to improve the service

Oettinger would be, compared to Warsteiner, a huge improvement!

Actually I don't care, I don't fly LH anymore and I am glad about it so let them serve what they want! But somehow it fits that they are serving Warsteiner, the world's worst airline is serving the world's worst beer! Big grin

I feel ashamed that both "labels" are from Germany.  Sad

oh no Patrick, I do not like Warsteiner, but to say it is bader than Oettinger ...

the only good think on Oettinger is that is such cheap... 5 euros for 20 bottles....(but better to invest the 5 euros on some bottles Bavarian Weißbier  Smile )
