Allergies Cause Itchy Skin?

Sat Aug 27, 2005 7:04 am

Hello, again  Smile

New question for ya'll.
I often get the most horribly itchy skin out of no where! I about want to rip my skin off sometimes! I cant figure out wha causes it or why. Typically popping a Benadryl works to stop it. I also use a Benadryl spray. When the itch kicks in it is usually localized but severe! It's not just any itch either, it is like a pin stick itch. You must scratch it and you must scratch NOW!
Is it possible to have allergies ON your skin from something in the air? I despise being outside for more than a few minutes because the same thing happens to me! It's miserable! No, it is not eczema either. There is no rash or redness associated.

Yes, it is completely possible to have skin allergies or reactions to something in the air. Think blister agents used in war. You can also get allergic skin reactions to something that you took internally - food or medication - and these don't have to show up as rashes.

Think about the medication you're taking and whether the symptoms get worse within an hour or two of your normal dosing schedule. It could be something you're taking. If not, it could be a food allergy or something to which you've developed a sensitivity.

Benadryl is OK to take as a pill or use as a spray, but be careful about combining the two. You also may want to try rubbing some meat tenderizer on a small area of skin (believe me, it works!) or if a large area is involved, pour corn starch into a warm bath and bathe for 15 minutes, then shower off with lukewarm water.

If this continues through the weekend, or you start wheezing, having shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, hives or swelling of your lips or face, seek immediate medical assistance.

Itchiness, girl, I can talk about that for hours - except mine is eczema. I get that kind of itchiness, where you MUST scratch and you must scratch now and you must scratch until you bleed, basically. Luckily, my eczema is currently under pretty good control.

You may want to check out Gold Bond Medicated Lotion. They have a pleasant feeling lotion with anti-itch agents. I found it to be very good for reducing itchiness.

Aveeno also has an oatmeal bath product. Something like that can also help to soothe itchiness.

Just for information...
A regular application of extra virgin, medic-grade olive oil is also benefitial.

Scarlet-
I have tried the Gold Bond stuff. I really despise stinky smells though. Gold Bond stinks!!! I tried using it the other day though out of desperation  Wink
Unfortunately it did not do to much  Sad Thanks for the suggestion!
The Benadryl cream seems to work best so far. I will try the olive oil next!
Why medical grade though? I have not ever heard of that. Where would one find it?

You know what, I think Iakobos is referring to putting olive oil on breasts!  Smile

Gold Bond makes a white bottle that is an oatmeal-based non-scented lotion. It's much better than the yellow bottle.
