If You Could Go Back In Time....

Mon Aug 29, 2005 7:32 am

....what would you like to witness? NOT CHANGE. Simply witness, in the course of history. You could be kind of like a hologram, ala "Al" in the NBC series "Qantam Leap". You can watch, witness, but not interfere.

For me? I'd like to see what it was REALLY like at Gettysburg; to watch the events at Pearl Harbor from the hills near Honolulu; to sit in the pill box and see the expressions on the faces of the German soldiers as the Normandy invasion is first seen; See if Lee Harvy Oswald really did kill JFK; evesdrop on Dick Cheney's energy meetings  Big grin Just kidding-kind of.

So, if you could, what would you like to witness?

I would want to see the events of Pearl Harbor, be on board 'Enola Gay' and 'Bocks Car' to see the dropping of "Little Boy" and "Fat Man"...the first flight of the space shuttle Columbia... the first flight of the 747  biggrin

A couple of things:

-The signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence
-The first flight of the Wright Flyer
-The 367-80 flight in Seattle when Tex Johnson barrel rolled it
-The only war related one I would take pleasure in watching would be the liberation of prisoners from Auschwitz

I'm sure there are others, but those come to mind first.

I would like to have been born in 1900. I would have been the perfect age for the roaring twenties and be able to witness the transition from silent to talking films. And the sheer number of technological advances in the 20th century would have been a marvel to witness. If I could have lived long enough to witness the Moon landing (which I vaguely remember as a child) I could have happily kicked the bucket after that.

I've always had a fascination with the 1920's, always felt slightly out of time in a way. If there was such a thing as a male flapper I would have been one.

I would go back to the day before there was no winner declared for a massive Mega Millions Lottery Drawing and then play the winning numbers!

I don't think that I would go back in time and try to stop historical events from happening, because like it or not it is minute circumstances of the past that form the realities of the present. In short, I guess I mean there is a butterfly effect of time.

Just imagine if you went back in time and told JFK a joke the day before the Cuban Missile Crisis. That one joke or even the fact that he had met you could have changed the direction his thought processes and changed the course of his social interactions for the following day, perhaps changing the outcome of the Missile Crisis for better or for worse.

Then again maybe I watched too many "Back To The Future" movies.

Start about 20 years earlier so I could have flown on a Constellation and a DC-7 and when US Railroads were kicking butt - The Super Chief, The Olympian Hiawatha, the California Zephyr, The North Coast Limited, The Empire Builder.

I would like to watch James Marshall discover gold at John Sutter's Mill.
I would also like to see where the Dutchman was really getting his gold. Since I don't believe that the Lost Dutchman's Mine really exists, he had to have stashed a stolen ore wagon somewhere.
I would also like to watch Christopher Columbus cross the Atlantic. I would like to know if he really found it on his own, or if he had a stolen portugese map.

I'd want to (In chronological order):

  • Watch the atomic bomb detanate over the sands of Alamogardo in 1945
  • Be onboard Glamerous Glennis as she rocketed through the sound barrier
  • Be onboard the SR-71 for her final flight, to IAD
  • Watch as the Gulf War I unfolded; a true example of AIR POWER!!!!
  • Ride on the Concorde when she came to Boston for her final flight

I'd like to see the signing of the document that created the Australian Federation.

Be on the steps of parliament house for Gough Whitlam's famous "Well may we say god save the Queen" speech.

Also - perhaps to relive the impending resignation of the NSW leader of the opposition. *insert evil laughter here*.

Great thread, but I'd look even farther back in time.

I'd like to see....

- The building of the Pyramids in Egypt and the Sphynx.

- Rome during the time of Ceasar and Christ

- To watch the fall of Troy

- To travel with Marco Polo and meet Ghengis Khan

- I'd like to watch Michellangelo paint the ceiling of the Sistene Chapel and carve the Pieta.

- With Stanley when he finds Livingstone

- To be with Sir Francis Drake as he discovers the Drake Passage.

- To watch Neil Armstrong take the first step on the moon.

- To be on the submersible that discovered Titanic.

That's enough for now.

-My first day of life, after being born (yuck, i dont want to see the actual birth).

-My Mom and Dad when they were small, maybe 5-10 years old.

-My Grandmother (Who was in the US Army) in Paris when it was Liberated in WW II. (And her first flight ever, out of Orly field in Paris)

-A big classy party in the 20's where everyone is dancing 'the charleston' ....

-England during Queen Victoria.

-Princess Diana

-The Last Supper

-A day during the height of the Lebanese Civil War...just so I could begin to understand....

-Rollout, and first fight, delivery, and first revenue flight of the 777 for AA.

I'm reading D-Day by Ambrose right now, so, yeah, that one would be really cool to watch. Not at Omaha Beach, though, but more like Utah (or maybe Juno when the Canadians got their vengeance against the Germans).

But the one I'd really want . . .

Quoting Falcon84 (Thread starter):
See if Lee Harvy Oswald really did kill JFK

I probably will never believe that he did, and even if he did shoot him, he had plenty of help. Personally, I think the assassination was the brainchild of Allen Dulles, but - weird you mentioned this, because I was thinking about this, I believe, just yesterday - I'd have about 7-8 friends w/me all positioned throughout Dealey Plaza (all w/video cameras) facing the fence behind the grassy knoll, the School Book Depository and a couple of the buildings behind where JFK was at the time of the shooting. Talk about a coverup.

A couple of things come to mind.
5 March 1995 when the Yacht One Australia sank in a race of San Diego;
It is said that the boat sank so fast no one bother to get out the camera and take a good picture.

Another one but can't think of something in particular at the moment is when someone goes missing and there is a big media story and subsequent search looking for that person. It would be good to go back in time and track the last known movements of the missing person.

To be in London during the blitz; my grandmother explained to me what it was like but would like to see what it was like for myself; I guess they would have lost a lot of old buildings.

On August 23, 79 AD, Pompeii

From above; how did they build those pyramids. so another good suggestion.
