Jardines VS Swire. Which One Is Bigger

Mon Aug 29, 2005 3:27 pm

I know both of them are British companies.

I refer to the entire Jardines, and the entire Swire which includes John Swire and Sons, Swire Group, Swire Pacific, Cathay Pacific etc etc.

Which company is bigger? Very confusing. Does Jardines Matheson include Jardines Strategic? Or shall I add them both together?

In the past I am sure Jardines was much bigger. Not sure about now.

Hutchison Whampoa Group and HSBC Holdings Group (the world's largest or second largest bank and financial institution plus the world's 8th largest firm) beat them both though.

They are all huge companies anyway.

Please help. Thanks

Jardine Matheson--wow, that brings back memories. 10 years ago I used to work for the US branch of Jardine Insurance Brokers, a business insurance brokerage in San Francisco. The US business unit of JIB was eventually sold and is now part of AON, but for a little while I worked for the Jardine Matheson conglomerate. Thankfully, I got the hell out of the insurance trade a long time ago.

Interestingly enough, Jardine-Matheson was the inspiration behind James Clavell's "Noble House".

There's a lot of interesting history involved with JM.

Evidently, yes:

As for who's bigger, Jardine Matheson or Swire, I'm sorry but I can't help you there.

Cheers,
Jeff

So Jardine Matheson's revenue/ assets includes Jardine Strategic's. Right? Or shall I measure them separately?

Good question. There are two separate annual reports listed on the web site, so it would appear they are measured separately:

However, I recommend you scrutinize them both for an answer.

I did. Guess they are measured separately and you add them both together....
