Mexican Coke In Glass Bottles

Wed Aug 31, 2005 6:49 am

I just went to a Mexican gorcery store/bakery. I bought some imported Coke from Mexico in glass bottles. WOW! It is ALOT better than what we get here in the states in cans/plastic bottles. Is the recipe different? OR is it just the glass bottle that makes the difference?

I think Mexican Coke is made with real sugar and not with syrup.

Actually there is a difference in my opinion. We have mostly plastic bottles here in Germany but a few weeks ago I drunk a Coke from a glass bottle, I don't know if it is only imagination but the Coke was tasting much better.

Yes, the recipe is different, and no, it's not the bottle that plays the most significant role. Also, don't confuse Coke Lite with Diet Coke.

I agree that it is better.
IIRC, that is because they still use cane sugar instead on corn syrup.

some countries (e.g. germnay) do not use corn syrup (fructose) as sweetener, but regular sugar (sucrose). makes it taste different. same in mexico?

however, even within one type of sugar (i.e. in germany) i always felt like coke from cans and glass bottles tastes better than plastic from plastic bottles. maybe the pressurization is different? but i suspect its more like a placebo effect.

By the way, it is the same with Fanta. I hate the German Fanta Orange but I love the Spanish Fanta Naranja, it tastes more fruity and not so sweet.

Patrick

Edit:

Another example is Mountain Dew, the German version sucks because it is not as sweet as the American version.

Correct!

Technically, these Cokes (and Pepsi, and Fanta) from Mexico are illegally imported into the US since they bypassed the soft drink maker's US distribution networks (a lot of these are brought in through importers of other Mexican drink companies, so it's a bit of a gray area). It's a gray market issue that both Coke and Pepsi are trying to counter. In some markets in Arizona and California, they're legally importing their drinks from Mexico, and are also starting to carry Mexican drinks like horchata in fountain setups in these areas as well.

Yeah, they are grey market at best, but I'll keep ordering my real Cokes and Fantas in bottles at the local carniceria by the case. Actual sugar and glass makes all the difference.

Even US cokes in glass bottles (available here in ATL at Cosco) tastes better than coke in plastic. Glass, aluminium, plastic....in that order are the preferred means of containerization of my favorite soft drink.

Does beer taste better in glass? Yes it does. I think Cola is the same way. The mini coke glass bottles that are for sale taste better then any can or plastic bottle. I remember as a kid having tons of the old 12oz glass bottles, you know the ones they show in commercials but don't sell in the U.S.

I don't think it's illegal. At most I would think that it could be violations of a purchase agreement but I'm glad to be able to buy them occasionally.

btw, I think the glass is part of what makes them great!

1. No chance of any chemical/plastic taste.
2. If they're cold enough then the release of pressure when you open the bottle turns the drink into a light slush - perfect! Plastic bottles will do the same but due to the very low thermal mass of the bottle it doesn't last long at all.

re Mountain Dew, I'll have to try the German flavor one day - the US is waay too sweet for me. Guess I'll have to go to Europe as AL is not exactly overrun with German bodegas.

Yes my friend, you have realized what millions of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans have known for decades: Mexican coke tastes better! I didn't mind to pay a few more bucks to get the Mexican coke at the local "tienda mexicana" (Mexican groceries store).

Now, to be fair, the American caffeine-free Pepsi light tastes far better than its Mexican version. I wish I could get it over here.

Cheers!

Glass bottled Coke is still really popular in the Miami area, since that is how it is done in most of Latin America. I personally do taste the difference. Coke out of glass is a lot better tasting, even with the same formula. Worth the small premium.

I normally hate Pepsi, however, when I was in Costa Rica, I had Pepsi from a glass bottle there, and it was ridiculously good...almost made me forget that I ordinarily am a huge Coke fan....

Damn this reminds me of the O. K. Feed store on Usless 1 and Red Road. They had a .25¢ antique bottle dispenser with the 6 oz glass bottles. DAMN what a memory those bring back.

When I was in Egypt I noticed the Pepsi was way sweeter than what I was used to in the US. Also, it was also less fizzy... same with the Coke and Fanta.

We still have this at the local feed store(not the same price though). And just as good, the owners of the ex-drug store/current antique store next door have maintained the old fashioned soda fountain. Oddly enough, the very good Mexican restaurant down the street does not serve Coke in glass.

it's all plastic in the Pittsburgh area, but when I travel to the south, there's always a store selling Coke in a glass bottle. Coke out of a glass bottle is simply the best.

I agree with most: it tastes so much better in glass bottles! Here we have all of them in glass, Coke, Pepsi, Sprite ...

In some places you even find the 1.5 lt glass bottle

Here in The Netherlands there are still supermarkets that sell the glass 1 litres bottles of Coca-Cola next to the plastic ones. Back when I was a little kid, there were only glass bottles and the coke tasted a lot better. Needless to say I now carry myself a hernia with the glass bottles!  Wink

As said before, sweetener has to do with the difference in taste and it goes back to the times when Coke could only use regular sugar produced in Mexico. When sweeteners started to appear in the Mexican market, Coke tried to use them and people realized the change in taste and complain. Coke had to do arrangements to keep the same flavor they have had for decades in their Mexican product.

For those of you who are heavy drinkers of coke or pepsi, there is a challenge in Mexico: People say that Coke in Mexico tastes as Pepsi in the US and Pepsi in Mexico tastes as Coke in the US. Is this true?

In Malta we have all our soft drinks in Glass bottles, the taste is 100% better, they produce a local drink in both glass and cans and the canned one tastes crap compared to the glass version.

I'm not a big fan of soft drinks, but all this talk made me thirsty...  yummy  Now, I need to find a way to sneak out from my job and get a bottle of Coke!
