Gulf Coast A.Netters...Check In

Wed Aug 31, 2005 9:49 pm

I've heard from a couple of our members who are on the Gulf Coast, but there are several others who I've not heard from or about.

Who besides MSYtristar (no word yet), Cboy (in BTR), TominNO (reported in), N1120A (evacuated to LA) lives in the affected areas?

I tried calling Cboy yesterday (yeah, I know he's on "vacation" but this is a little different, he's still part of the community) and all lines in are busy...as to be expected. Since he was in Baton Rouge I'd expect he's ok, but perhaps without power.

MSYTristar was supposed to have a birthday party in NO and there's no word.

Tom, you able to get online yet?

Anyone else with news, it would be appreciated by many of us.

Ian,

A good and really helpful advise to all:

STAY OFF THE LINES (the ones that connect to affected areas that is)

I'll make it short but in disaster management the first priority is communications.
This is the first thing that breaks down and it is also the essential element in "managing" any emergency situation.

If fellows are in the region, they will make sure to sign on when they will be able to do so.

Sorry if I am using Sergeant-Major-like language but this is reality.
Everyone wants to hear about families or buddies, that is natural and of course well intended.
The downside is that little of the telephone infrastucture remains in place and the emergency services need much more than what is available, I am absolutely sure of that.

Alireza was posting last night . . . .

I think MD-90 was in Hattiesburg (I think that's where U-Miss is) and he hasn't checked in.

Well, I don't have any particular affinity for the guy or his hero worship of LewNumbskull.com, but neither do I wish him harm or heartache . . . . no one deserves the shit storm they're going through down there . . . .

I didn't wish him any harm, just hoping his internet stays down longer than everyone else's.

MD-90 goes to Mississippi State, which is in Starkville, Miss., and for the record, Ole Miss is in Oxford, not Hattiesburg...

Iakobos posted something that makes sense, and I wasn't trying to initiate a landslide of phone calls to the affected area. However the government authorities are telling people to try and call out to let relatives and friends know, so I am hoping that people will be able to do this.

I'm glad TominNO (he IMed me today) and MD90 are seemingly not affected, what about the rest? Any words yet?

How are you guys affected who were in the path of the storm?

Hey,

I know that everyone says stay off the phone lines, but I have a friend I went to college with. Her parent's house is right on the coast in Mandeville, LA. Their house HAS to be gone. It's like you walk out her front door and there's the mouth of the ocean. I tried calling, but all I get is her voicemail. Anyway, I sent her an email, not like she is going to be able to respond. Anyway, just worried about her.

I am of course asking about anyone who lives or was caught in the path of this giant storm.

OK...I'm gonna break a rule here, and if I get banned so be it.

I spoke to Concordeboy, Freddie, and he's ok up in Baton Rouge for anyone who knows him and was curious. They don't have power, and he called out on the cellphone but is rationing his batteries. His grandfather lives in Harvey (which is currently under about 12 feet of water) and has not been heard from since Sunday. The Red Cross has not published the list of rescued survivors, and there was no contact from the Superdome and Fred's family is distressed to say the least. So any prayers or good wishes to Fred sure couldn't hurt.

I have heard from others as well as Fred this refrain. During the tsunami coverage one could change the channel to get away from the bad news. That isn't possible there, and it's pretty damned distressing.

All of our friends in the affected areas are going to need our support. I know they'll get it from me, and I hope we can all reach across politics and other divisions to continue to chip in. This is going to take a while.

So, we know about Tom and Fred.....who else in the region can check in yet?

I don;t believe this violates the rules, and if it does, these are times when rules are made to be broken, sort-a-speak.

I vote: No ban for Ian.

Ian,

Sorry to come again on it, it is not to insist, just to explain...
during the first phase of emergency services interventions communications are absolutely vital.
Whatever remains of the public telephone and mobile networks will be overloaded by those services and by the people in the affected areas for which it could the only means to contact anyone.
These are the two groups with priority No 1.

The US, fortunately but not incidentally, has a specialized community of qualified and well trained persons who do provide the necessary addition, replacement or back up of communications, under the umbrella of a well-oiled organisation.
They provide not only the operators and their own transport means, they also provide their own equipment.

Known as RACES or ARES or ARDS, those volunteer ham radio ops working for crisis comms are not doing a good job, they are doing a brilliant job.
Hats off.

I hope as well that our fellow members down there are doing ok.
And I think its a good thread to start as well Ian. Even if they don't have the time to write them selves. But they might have taalked to other A.netters that can tell that they and their families are ok.

Has anyone heard from all the A-Net folks from the affected areas yet? I saw in another thread last week that there are a couple still unaccounted for down that way.... any new news?

Ok...we've heard from:
Concordeboy, who is currently on A.net "vacation" so he can't really check in,
but he's ok.
MSYTristar...said he was headed for Denver to get some work while this is going on.
TominNO....Said he's back at work and he spent to hurricane out of town.
MD90....He's back to posting and said he was good to go.

I'm not sure who else lives in the disaster zone, but as it runs from Alabama to Louisiana I'm certain there are others who were affected.
