2006 Honda Civic Awesome!

Thu Sep 01, 2005 10:57 pm

Honda just released pics of the new 2006 Honda Civic. It also gets 38MPG!

http://www.collegehillshonda.com/civiccoupe/gallery.htm

I spoke to the Honda Dealer last night. Due to high demand that is forcast, they will add $4000.00 to factory sticker as a "District Availability Surcharge"

Aa777,
I would agree. I saw it in Car and Driver last night. Very cool, indeed!

Russ,

What sucks is with a MSRP price of around $22,000 add in the $4,000 mark up on it you are looking at $26,000.00 OUCH!. Toyota dealers are adding around a $5,000 premium on the Prius making it close to $30,000.00.

I can buy a SH**t load of gas for that...

Maybe I will keep my PAID FOR 2002 Lexus.

I am really warming up to the new design, but I would still like to see it in person in all of the body styles. The current car is rather, well..., bland and somewhat disappointing. Honda has been experiencing generally soft sales with the entire Honda line-up, new vehicles like the Ridgeline are not meeting sales projections, and some general quality woes have been popping up with alarming regularity over the past few years.

Honda really needs a hit with this car, along with the refreshed 06 Accord. Given our current sensitivities to gas prices a new car like the Civic might do better than usual in the sales department.

Anyone who would go along with such price-gouging is making a huge mistake. Doing so is basically equivalent to paying $4,000 for an ego boost - "Hey everyone, I've got one of the new Civics. Look at me!" And however nice the 2006 Civic may be, there certainly are alternatives, other cars that are available without having to enrich greedy dealers.
Let's not forget what happened when Chrysler introduced the PT Cruiser a few years ago. There was rampant price-gouging, with some people paying thousands over sticker and travelling to distant states to find dealers with ones in stock. Less than a year after their introduction, however, sales of PT Cruisers fell off to the point Chrysler had to offer large rebates and other incentives. I wonder what the first buyers, who'd paid the huge premiums, thought about that?

PROSA-

I think the main thing with the added mark up is due to the price of Gas. This is something the dealers have started in the past week or so. As long as prices stay high for gas, I think the premium will stay. When I use to sell Hondas about 13 years ago, we put a $3000.00 mark up on all cars. Most of the time we did not get it, however....every once in a while "a fool and his money are soon parted..." if you dont ask for it you wont get it.

The 2006 Si will have a sticker of around 22,000. Add $4,000 to that. The Hybrid will be around 25,000 plus the $4,000.

I'm going to have to wait to see the new Civic in the metal before I decide on it... At the moment I really want to like it, but can't. My first impression is that it looks like a late-80s/early-90s vision-of-the-future concept car - what we'll all be driving in 2006. Well true, we will, but to my eyes so far it looks like it's straight out of a computer game, and like it'll date very quickly. I'm hoping I'll be proved wrong.

I believe it was Autocar that ran with the headline "Next Civic: More Sega Than Saga". How appropriate!

I'm not sure I follow. Do you mean that because gasoline has gotten so expensive, people are willing to pay thousands over sticker for fuel-efficient cars?

Precisely my thoughts! I'll keep my PAID FOR 2003 Toyota 4Runner - which gets 23mpg; pretty respectable for an SUV.

I'm still curious about those prices that Aa777flyer gave. $22,000 US (plus the $4,000 mark up) upwards for a Civic seems very unrealistic to me. I took out a used Mini on the weekend at our local Acura dealer and we were talking about the 2006 RSX. He gave me the fax with the specs on it and it's starting at $28,000 CDN (mind you, the 2006 base model is the premium 2005 model).

I think Civic Hybrids were going for around $18,000 last time I checked. It would floor me to think they are now $25,000+. Maybe it's time to sell mine for a modest profit. LOL!

I don't think there's going to be a $4000 markup. MSRP for the normal Civics for at least the first few month, then maybe a G note over for the Si's. I work at a Top 10 national Honda store and we are only getting 4 civics in September.

Germany is also to get the "Asian" version. The US one looks a whole lot classier though. Wonder if they are going to make a hybrid version of it. That would be sweet.

The more I look at the pictures, the more I'm liking it. Kinda looks like a miniature Accord Coupe crossed with a Peugeot 307 Cabrio (with the roof closed). I think I might go in to our Honda dealership later on today and get some more info.

Try buying the car online and get quotes from 2-3 dealers in the area. I bought a 2005 Accord Hybrid online and it had $0 markup on it. Down the road and walking up in person the sales guy wouldn't budge on a $4900 markup over the base $30,000. You might have better luck this way.

I've only just clicked the link in the thread starter, and realised that you're all on about a different version... seems Europe is getting the Asian version as Ushermittwoch said. Have to say I'm surprised - the North American one just looks unattractive - as if Honda chickened out on the plexiglas front, and buggered up the proportions at the rear  expressionless

I just got back from test driving a 2005 Si, and we were talking about the 2006 model. As I suspected, they will be the same price as offered this year. Maybe $1000 more when they first hit the showrooms in late October early November. As far as the Hybrid models are concerned, we actually get about a $3000 government rebate, so that knocks off the price to $25,000 CDN. So, my advice to you Aa777flyer, find yourself a different dealer ...  Wink

"Due to high demand that is forcast, they will add $4000.00 to factory sticker as a "District Availability Surcharge"

It may be a great car but I'm underwhelmed (as I usually am with the looks of Honda cars) by the styling which is Saturn Ion-esque in my eye. And that markup is an insult; no Civic is worth that sort of premium! The unchanged but still excellent Toyota Corolla will be a far better value, as would be a Mazda 3 or even a new Ford Focus. Though the Focus is comparatively dated and unrefined, with its early reliability woes behind it, it's still a solid and far cheaper choice. And the Civic will have a hard time knocking the vaunted Mazda 3 off of many buyers preferred lists with that stiff dealer premium. I predict that extra tariff will disappear within a few months as early car shortages abate and dealers find that the new Civic isn't quite hot enough to retain buyers over other models with such a price handicap. Sure, it gets 38 mpg but so does the Corolla. Although a new Civic is always welcome, Honda can't make the mistake of pricing it arrogantly, either; it's not exactly the Second Coming.

As much as I'd like to force myself to like it, I just can't. As a happy Civic owner currently ('98), I hate to see the new Civic look less than attractive. I like what the designers were going for, and everything looks fine, with the exception of the headlamps and front grille. It looks like some deranged tiger waiting to lose a street race.

When I first saw the new Accord a year or two ago, I feared that Honda was going to try to incorporate those ugly headlamps and grilles into all their cars. My fears are confirmed now that I see not only the new Civic but also the RidgeLine, the ugliest pickup in the world.

Someday when I need to upgrade I'll stick with the 2001-2005 models...this new design obviously was designed with ricing in mind rather than people seeking a classy yet simple daily driver.

Ugh. The front on the new Civic looks too much like the initial Saturn Ion models.

If the current fuel prices remain stable, I'll be up to about $4000 annually just for gas on my 2000 Nissan Maxima.

Thank you, your Toyota was or will be made in my home town of Cambridge Ontario, so it will be built at Toyota's highest ranked plant.

Possible but very unlikely. The vast majority of US Corollas are made in the same factory as the Pontiac Vibe in California.

Although it pains me I am actually starting to consider dumping the Max for a Corolla. That would save me about $1500 a year on gas (the Max uses premium) but cost around $500-600 more per year to insure. I like the Mazda 3 more, but it is very expensive to insure and the initial production models had lots of problems.

From the Toyota website:

The Corolla holds a special place for TMMC: the first car to roll off the assembly line at TMMC was a 4-door Blue Mica Corolla sedan on November 30, 1988. Since then, the plant has produced more than one million Corollas for sale in Canada, the U.S., and Puerto Rico. In fact, every single Corolla sold in Canada is produced at TMMC.

Well not quite, the Vibe is built in California and the Matrix is built in Cambridge Ontario Canada (My city) but yes they are on the Corolla Platform which is also the Celica.

And you won't be disappointed. One of my brothers owns the previous gen Corolla S. It gets every bit the advertised gas mileage, and perhaps slightly more if you baby it. It's not the most comfortable car I've ever driven (I find my 1995 Escort to be far more comfortable), but it is a pleasure. Very well balanced, very communicative steering -- not bad for a commuter.

Getting back to the issue of price-gouging, earlier today my wife and I went to a local dealership to look at the restyled 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Her lease on a 2001 Eclipse will be running out before long. While the new Eclipses are stunning cars - from the rear, they're very similar to the far more expensive Nissan 350Z - we were quite dismayed to see that the dealership was charging $2,195 over sticker. This price-gouging was accomplished via a dealer-added alarm system and remote starter, as listed on a "second sticker" next to the manufacturer's one. All of the Eclipses had them.

PROSA: Re: the Eclipses - If the dealer added alarm and remote starter accounts entirely for the additional $2195., technically it's not the same as a "market adjustment" or "additional dealer markup" as with the new Civic, where the dealer tacks on added thousands for no extra equipment. I agree, however, that $2200. for adding just those 2 items IS a ripoff and rather arrogant for a dealer of a car brand on life support. Mitsubishi certainly doesn't need its shaky sales standing further sullied by profiteering dealers such as this.

Good point. Even though Mitsubishi has little control over the prices its dealers charge, people are going to blame it anyway.

The US Corollas are made at the NUMMI plant in Fremont, CA http://www.toyota.com/about/operatio...acturing/manu_location/nummi.html. The website just says that every Canadian Corolla is made in Canada, not ones on the uS (as the person who responded is in the US).
Although some Canadian Corollas make it over the border, I don't think it is a vast number.

CPDC10-30, I know a few folks who work at the Cambridge plant and they told me that the Corollas sold in states on the West are built at the New united Motors but all other Corollas sold in the USA and all of Canada come from Cambridge TMMC. That's what I was told. I see a lot of them going out on the Local Train system, SANTA FE and Western Pacific.
