My Apology To The World

Fri Sep 02, 2005 7:38 am

To all fellow A-nutters:

I, Matt D would like to publicly announce my apologies for some of the comments I made in that 'other' thread. We all know which one it is, so there is no need to link to it.

The whole debate got started when someone asked a very simple question: "Where is the aid from other nations in our time of need"?

Some people were quick to point out that we 'don't need it' and 'we are capable of taking care of ourselves'. I countered back 'well a token gesture would be nice'.

And it quickly escalated into a very nasty nationalistic fight from there. Among some of the arrogant remarks I made were "you need us more than we need you." and so on.

Needless to say, what little remaining civility went out the window from there; although that's not to say that some of don't still have some valid points; all of us should be ashamed at ourselves at how we presented ourselves. There are thousands, if not millions of people suffering down there and we are bickering over who should or should not give aid. Very shallow on all of our parts, including mine. It was pretty obvious we were jumping the gun. Even now, we still don't know the full extent of the damage, which could take weeks or months.

In another ongoing thread, I made a comment that I would issue an apology if any other nations offered any aid. Well..click on the link below. They did.

And while you may not agree with what I say, no one can EVER accuse me of hypocrisy or not standing behind my word.

Anyone can come on and state a controversial opinion. And it takes guts to stand behind them. It takes even more guts, plus a lot of integrity to admit you were wrong and issue an apology.

Well, as I said, I'm a man of of my word. To all of you who may have felt insulted by some things I said, I as a "red" American offer the olive branch and my sincerest of apologies.

We thank everyone from everywhere for your thoughts, prayers, and yes. Your aid that we are probably able to provide ourselves.

Never let it be said you aren't stand up when it comes to you honoring your word.

Takes a man to apologize in public. Would be nice to excise that last bit at the very end of your post, but hey.

Matt D:
Thanks for the link. As expected, Israel gets TWO paragraphs regarding the undisclosed amount of money they are sending back to us. Nevermind the fact that 21 other nations that are bigger and more significant is also contributing.
Much thanks to Hugo Chavez and his government for the assistance as well as France, China, Canada, El Salvador, Mexico, Jamaica, Japan and all others that helped.

All the help is welcomed and I wish all the best to those who have suffered.
I just had to point out a bias that is so common in our press.

Good for you! I understood where you were coming from but felt you might have been over-reacting. Understandable I suppose, and at least you have the guts and good manners to apologise. If only more people on a.net would take a leaf out of your book. While I didn't agree with you, I'm glad I didn't post any insulting or abusive comments. . . and, hey, if there was a local fundrasing effort for New Orleans, I probably WOULD contribute something after all. . .

MattD, I don't agree with you very often, and perhaps never, but I'm glad to see you living up to your word. Agree or disagree, standing up to one's word is a very laudable characteristic. Peace.

MattD,

Kudos to you.

Supefly,

Why didn't you choose to mention that Israel offered to send HUNDREDS of aid workers? Coming from a country of only six million, this is an impressive offer. Israel is always on the scene of disasters, whether its earthquakes in Turkey or Iran, or the tsunami in SE Asia. I know your position on Israel, but I feel the criticism this time is unwarranted.

let me mention that you are one of 1 % of anetters who has the nuts to apologize. I will have a look at these comments, and if I felt offended, the apology is taken without prejudice, if I was not offended I think it is great what you have did here in this thread. So When I read the posts you wrote in those mentioned threads, I was like Daaamn. Did Matt D just have a case of Tourrets syndrome or what? Big grin

Come off it. Most of the people on here are so far up their own arses they don't deserve an apology even if you are in the wrong. Just bite your tongue and go do a charitable deed instead.

However, since you're in the mood for apologising then apologise for this.

Well, you certainly earned my respect. I found amusing a letter to the editor of USA Today from a guy who said he thought that some of the oil-rich nations should drop the price of oil as a way of helping out. How convenient of him to overlook the fact that oil companies are making billions in profits. But, hey! Let's not let the money-sucking whore fat cats suffer their portfolios.
If it pisses off the right, I'm all for it.

I can't believe some ignorant posted a blog regarding how shameful the US should feel for accepting foreign aid for once. God knows how many trillions they've given out in foreign aid, how many countries they've saved, and the amount of debt forgiven. Blows my mind away...

Matt D, after reading your posts in that thread the first thing I did was delete you from my respected users list. I've just added you again. Some people find it impossible to admit when they're wrong, which is something that annoys me intensely. Anyone who can apologise the way you have here gets my respect.
