Why So Many Liberals On A.net?

Sat Sep 03, 2005 3:00 am

So, I have a simple question. Why are so many plane nuts here on A.net liberal? I am a moderate Republican, I will make no qualms about that, but it seems that my somewhat conservative opinions get slaughtered here on the forums.

FACT: George W. Bush won the last election by a majority of the votes.

Given that, and other stats that show conservative Americans as the majority, why do planes attract so many liberals?

Just a thought, and no, I DO NOT want a political debate on my hands.

Thanks

Well, I guess this belongs more in Non-Aviation, but I'll bite.

Maybe because A.Net is a WORLD forum, not just an AMERICAN forum. We have people logging on from US, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, Brazil, Tanzania, Malaysia, South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia, UAE, Australia, and everywhere in between. Just because America voted in a slight majority to re-elect GW, doesn't mean the whole world voted in a slight majority. I think this website shows how the world views GW, not just America, be it pro or con.

If you want anyone to respond to this, you should post it on Non-Aviation forum because this might be an interesting thread.

then don't try to bring up majorities when you know it's going to get hammered by those discussing the electoral college, and the fact that only a disgusting percentage of registered voters actually voted.

A couple of facts:

1) You have posted a political question in the Aviation Polls & Preferences Forum. You should have posted this in the Non-Aviation Forum.

2) This website is hosted in Sweden, not the US. You question assumes that everyone here is an American.

3) Yes, GWB won the last Presidental election. That doesn't mean the majority of Americans are conservatives. It just means that the majority of American were fooled into voting for someone who's a conservative.

I'm not sure if I'd agree that people were "fooled" into voting for GW. Many people, especially in the American South and Midwest agree with the values he campaigned on - protecting America no matter what the cost, family first, strong - Christian morals, etc.

Also, I know a LOT of people, myself included, who were kind of lost in the election of 2004. I didn't vote for Kerry, I voted AGAINST Bush, and I know a ton of people who were the exact same way (either for Kerry against Bush, or for Bush against Kerry)...and it just so happened that Bush was on the winning end of it all.

Well, like it or not: That´s how an election in a democracy works. Everybody who did not partake in a poll, may not complain afterwards that the wrong persons/parties have won the election.

I have a wide range of socio-political convictions. A few of these are rather conservative (I am against abortion except if the mother's life is in danger, I am against legalization of drugs, though I agree with de-criminalization of simple posession), and one or two are radically liberal (I am for giving people under 18 far greater legal rights, to the extent that each individual young person can exercise them). Many of my views are generally moderate or basically liberal (for example, I am against communism but for democratic socialism, including medicare and free basic higher education, but not to the extent of supporting "handouts". Welfare only to those who really need it while they really need it).

When I compare some of my views to the views of many A-netters (eg. George Bush is great, women should know their place, children often need to be corporally punished and otherwise treated strictly), I find many posters to have a rather conservative side! American ones at least.

I'd say however that in general, you can find a wide political spectrum here.

Just watch'em light up after this post!!!

Actually, there are a few good lefties around here that do actually attempt to back their arguments, even if they're wrong, such as Falcon84 and Logan22L, among a few others. But then there are others that use "its George Bush's fault" every argument. You spot these easily when they refuse to debate you no matter how much you try because after they shoot their only bullet (again, its GWB's fault) they're done.

Glad to have you here. Join in the fun often.

A right wing party in Europe is best comparable to the democrats in the US. The republican party of the US would be considered too right and remain on the fringes in most of Europe.

In Europe the general opinion is far more leftist. Since this is an international site it is hard to get a clear mayority of people with extreme views. Be it leftist, rightist, christian, muslim etc.

The fact that there are so many liberals on this website indicates that maybe Liberals tend to be more tech savy on a whole compared to Conservatives. However, the fact of the matter is that conservatives are on a rise in America and it is apparent by the increasing conservative student movements on America's campuses.

I consider myself more a moderate than a conservative, but I tend to be more right leaning than left.

I feel that extreme lefties tend to be flag-burning, America hating, and tree hugging eco-nuts. Just as extreme righties tend to be kiss the flag or die, xenophobic nationalists, and eco-terrorists.

I abhor the kind of laissez-faire liberalism that is an earmark of today's society. In an effort to achieving the most freedom in every mode of life many abandon morals for sterile reason. Abortion and religious conviction being key items of contention between conservatives and liberals.

Why So Many Liberals On A.net?

What kind of question is that? Even if there are currently indeed more liberals (however you may define the term "liberal") then conservatives here on the forums - how shall others respond to that question?

Are we talking about US American liberals and conservatives or about European liberals - which would mean that fiscally conservative people are the majority here? Do you include liberals from other areas, too? And how come the majority of buyers at a certain Wal Mart in the Detroit area was conservative on August 7?

51% of the voters defeating 49% of the voters is not an overwhelming majority, nor is it a very accurate sample of American ideals and beliefs. The fact is that America is basically polarized down the middle (it's as close to 50-50 as it's ever gonna be) and this website consisting of American and Int'l users (int'l users tend to be more liberal), logically there are going to be more left-minded thinkers posting than the other side.

I am a realist: I have opinions on about everything. Some might be liberal (like gay-marriages, health care for everybody, no income tax on labor, etc.) others right (abortion, severe punishments for criminals, the right to own a gun, death penalty etc.). Even some might be considered extreme (make all religion illegal, forced birth control for unfit parents, etc.)

Fact still remains that the impact of media is the most important influence to the masses. Look at religion, politics and dictators. They use media for only their own gain (=mostly money and power).

Come on now, you know EXACTLY what he means. I think all your knitpicking just proclaims to everyone that instead of contributing thoughtfully to this thread you intend to give our friend, Kykevin54 a hard time just because he has conservative views.

He is baffled to find more people who opposes his ideals then those who support them. So what? Even though I'm moderately left, there are still more people here who have opposing views. Although I probably understand what he means, it bewilders me to see him posting a question like this, because it looks as if he expected to see more conservative-leaning people and now is disappointed.

Kykevin54 has been here since July and knows by now that many discussions can be heated and arguments are often unfair. This goes for both sides, which is something you know very well, too. Recently, (liberal) Europe was accused of having lost grip on reality; one European minister was bashed (even by other liberals like me) although what "left-left" Spiegel wrote was somewhat taken out of context.

Rather than posting his question he should better have asked himself why he's so astonished.

Quoting Flybyguy (Reply 40):
And if you refresh your memory by re-reading his post it will become evident the reason why a thread like this was started was because of you.

Me? Hopefully you'll help me "refreshing my memory".

Weak flamebait...

Quoting AeroWeanie (Reply 4):
A couple of facts:

1) You have posted a political question in the Aviation Polls & Preferences Forum. You should have posted this in the Non-Aviation Forum.

...and it wasn't even started in the right place  Yeah sure

I am a social Liberal first and a FISCAL conservative second. The WASTE of this administration DEFIES ALL RATIONAL Conservative Fiscal policy!!! Compound that with thier socail conservative agenda, and this President is the biggest LOOSER on the PLANET!!

Do you think that would be the case if the United States had compulsary voting?

The jails would be full!
