On The Issue Of Cannibalism In New Orleans ...

Sat Sep 03, 2005 12:02 pm

There was a short-lived thread yesterday that asked whether cannibalism was likely to break out in New Orleans. Several people condemned the thread as ridiculous and it soon got deleted.

It turns out that the respected political activist and author Randall Robinson claimed today that cannibalism already has begun:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/randall-robinson/new-orleans_b_6643.html

I find it very difficult to believe that there really is any such thing going on, make that just about impossible to believe, but if nothing else Robinson's claim means that raising the possibility is not wholly ridiculous.

I think a thread like this should exist, but unfortunately I don't think it will last...

People do obscenly horrible things when they are desperate.

It would not surprise me in the least if cannibalism were going on in New Orleans. I think it really is that bad.

FWIW, the author of the quoted article has made this a racial hatchet-job aimed at...well, basically anyone who isn't African-American, from what I can tell.

He's described as being a "a social justice advocate and author"
whose works include The Debt – What America Owes to Blacks

Among his quotes from the article:

It is reported that black hurricane victims in New Orleans have begun eating corpses to survive. Four days after the storm, thousands of blacks in New Orleans are dying like dogs. No-one has come to help them.

Did chartered limousines come to whisk away the white hurricane victims who lived down the street?  banghead

I am a sixty-four year old African-American.

New Orleans marks the end of the America I strove for.

No, but New Orleans marks the beginning of taking Mother Nature FAR more seriously.

I am hopeless.

At least we can agree on one thing!  bigthumbsup

I am sad. I am angry against my country for doing nothing when it mattered.

You're right - we should have just broken out the "Hurricane Death Ray" that we have in storage.  sarcastic

This is what we have come to. This defining watershed moment in America’s racial history.

Why must the issue of race be inserted here? Katrina was an Equal-Opportunity Storm, friend. It laid waste without discrimination; African-Americans, caucasians, Asians, Latinos - EVERYONE was a target of her wrath.

This article is race-baiting at its worst, if you ask me.

At the risk of sounding vulgar, I'm reminded of that Simpsons episode where the Fladers' were forced to drink toilet water while hiding for a few hours in their house during a bear "attack".

Anyone who resorts to canibalism after only 4 or 5 days is certainly already, shall we say, predisposed to doing this. In other words, they've done it before or are seriously mentally ill.

This thread is an example of the hysteria that much of this country is feeling, much like the gas lines in ATL. People feel like they need to worked up over something so they too can justify their feelings of helplessness.

This is the end of thread response for me until tomorrow sometime.

What's so wrong with cannibalism? the dead bodies are only going to harbour disease if left for long periods anyways, and there are a lot of hungry people that won't have necessarily have access to food. Like it or not we are all made of meat and offal. The only reason humans are no longer everyday cannibals is because modern society has deprogrammed that instinct by replacing it with others. When circumstances outside of normal social boundaries like this occur the instinct will kick in again... Humans are so overly sentimental - sure it's not nice, but neithers dying in the lawless aftermath of a grade A disaster.

Agreed it is probably too early to resort to cannibalism just yet, but given time it may happen - But if it's a matter of the already dead rotting in peace on the sidewalks or the still living surviving the ordeal that faces them then there is no contest.

I'm pretty sure that you're going to have a hard time proving that the majority of humans on earth were cannibals at one point in history. It is my opinion that our instinct tells us that it is just wrong somehow and when cannibalism occurs, it's when an overriding of human instincts kicks in. I agree with others that have stated that it would take either a seriously desperate person (no food for two weeks or more) or a mentally ill person to engage in such behavior.

There have been widespread groups of people on every continent that have practised cannibalism and as we all originated from the same genetic stock and migrated to our respective destinations that would indicate that it was present at some point in time in between those tribes in order for it to have continued. Cannibalism is a known survival trait as indicated in many species of mammal. I see no reason why homo sapiens sapiens is any different. As I said it has been socially engineered out of us over an extended period of time, but social engineering does not control a raw instinct to survive at any cost in a time of extreme physical & emotional hardship that falls outside the usual bounds of reality....
