Official College Football Opening Weekend Thread!

Sun Sep 04, 2005 10:12 am

Ok, my last thread on this Thursday was met with remarks like "These matchups suck, I'll wait for Saturday" and stuff like that...well, now it's Saturday, and we can talk about it...

The biggest upset of the day, by far, was unranked and unheralded TCU marching into Norman and taking out the #7 Oklahoma Sooners, 17-10...sorry Bob Stoops!!!

In a game much closer to me, and one that I attended in person, the Rocky Mountain Showdown, my Colorado Buffaloes took out the Colorado State Rams in an absolute thriller, 31-28...this rivalry game gets better and better each year...too bad next year is the last date it's scheduled for currently  Sad

Here's some pics from the game...

The game's hero, Colorado kicker Mason Crosby, just after hitting a 47 yarder with 4 seconds left that won the game...also his 21st birthday today, and I don't think he'll be buying drinks anytime soon...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/BuffsandEagles/CIMG0147.jpg

Of course, we rushed the field after the big win...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/BuffsandEagles/CIMG0162.jpg

What the hell are those lamers doing up in the stands still???

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/BuffsandEagles/CIMG0165.jpg

And yours truly...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/BuffsandEagles/CIMG0173.jpg

How'd your team do today???

OSU 34-14 over Miami. In Tressel style though.....he pulled the starters on defense in the third quarter and let Miami score two cheapies. Might have been good strategy as to not let Texas get a good look in order to formulate their game plan. Next week might be for the national championship. Go BUCKS!

Where's KROC? Waiting for the bashing to begin...lol.

Thats the problem with the FSU UM game, I never know who to root for since both teams can't lose.

Urban Meyer's first game was successful,

UF - 32
UW - 14

Well, my beloved Falcons can score points, and not too many teams will be able to stop their offense. Omar Jacobs was 29 of 50 passing, for 440 yards, 4 TD passes and 1 pick. He's amazing to watch. Unfortunately, he had a good 10 passes dropped, and more unfortunately, Wisconsin's running game made mincemeat of Bowling Green's rund defense.

Wisconsin 56, Bowling Green 42.

But damn if their offense isn't fun to watch.

And the Buckeyes made much easier work of Miami, Ohio than I expected. Can't wait for the Texas game!

How about our Lehigh Mountain Hawks destroying Monmouth (who went 10-1 last year) 54-26 under the leasership of 344 yards from our QB and 301 rushing yards from ONE running back alone?!?!?!?!?!?! INSANE!

Boise State got demolished between the hedges in Athens, GA by the 'Dawgs 48-13. Man, that was really great. My team, Fresno State, doesn't play until next week against Weber State, but will prolly move up in the polls due to the upsets (ND crushing Pitt, TAMU losing a close one to Clemson, etc. BSU's destruction, Auburn currently losing). I was impressed with CSU's effort against CU.

One of the big mid-major non-conference games takes place on the 21st, I believe, when Bowling Green travels to Boise and the blue turf. I feel better about BG's chances, because I don't think Boise can run the ball on Bowling Green the way Wisconsin did.

That should be a damn fun game to watch.

So the DFW triplets are 1-1-1. Not a bad start to the season. After TCU, the air for the SMU-Baylor game left the building here in dallas. Way to go Horny Frogs!

Have UGA capitalized on all of those turnovers, they should have won 60-something to 13.

And the North Avenue Trade School upsets the Auburn War Chickens 23-14.

Bowling Green 42
Wisconsin 56

Was a really wild game. BG went out on top 13-0 and 20-7, then we came back with 35 2nd quarter points and took over in the 3rd. Colorado transfer (haha greg!) and Milwaukee native Brian Calhoun had an amazing Badger debut with 258 yards on 43 carries. The two teams combined for 14 touchdowns and 1,035 yards.

It was one of those "lame" Thursday matchups, but I'll throw it out there anyway.

Washington State: 38
Idaho: 26

WSU was up 14-0 only 1:03 into the game, but sloppy play allowed Idaho to get back into, and remain in the game until the 4th quarter. Either way, it was way too close for an Idaho game, and it has me worried for the Pac-10 part of the schedule.

In my last year here at the University of Kansas (unless I stay here for grad school), I have made an effort to get to every football, basketball, and soccer game here. Thus, yesterday was the start of it all.

My Kansas Jayhawks beat Florida Atlantic 30 - 19. Next weekend we've got Appalachian State...I predict a 40 - 14ish score...we'll see!  Smile

Well for this opening weekend I had 3 things I want to see

1. USC to win
2. Clemson to lose
3. NC State to win

Well, 1 out of 3 wasn't bad. Year 1 of the Steve Spurrier era kicked off at USC as the Gamecocks picked up a 24-15 win over the Golden Knights of the University of Central Florida. Alas, the rest of my hopes came to naught as Clemson beat Texas A&M by a last second FG and NC State lost one of the best matches I saw this weekend to Marcus Vick and Virginia Tech. Next week Carolina faces Georgia in what promises to be a tough match while NC State has a slightly easier match-up against Eastern Kentucky. Clemson, that team that I hate with a passion, faces up against Maryland. Go 'Cocks, Go 'Pack, and Go 'Terps!

Yup my Sooners lost...but honestly they needed it. They have an attitude problem. Going forward they need to play the freshman QB, Bomar, and build the team back around him.

As for Lt-AWACS...if you guys end up winning, finally, you damn well better go all the way and hand it to USC.  Smile Make it count.

Also sad to see BGSU lost, but look for them to have a great year regardless. Toledo won as well, but against a cup cake. Doesn't count.  Smile

BG gets a cupcake this week in Ball State, but then it's off to Boise. The Falcons' big games are at Miami Nov 15, and home to Toledo Nov 22. Between there, I don't think the Falcons will lose in Conference-and I do think they can run the table, as I can see them beating Boise State in 2 weeks.

Given a choice between winning and an attitude adjustment, I'll take the win every time. I didn't think Oklahoma deserved to be in the last two title games in which they were beaten. But I don't have a vote, and others thought they did. I think Oklahoma's in for a rough year. Apparently Jason White was far more important than we thought.

True story: In 2002, we're in our seats in Beaver Stadium awaiting the start of OSU-PSU. On the scoreboard, they're showing clips of past glory, and at the end, the board flashes, "We are Penn State... and we'll get it back." My buddy Matt turns to me and says, "I hope I *never* see that on the scoreboard at Ohio Stadium." No kidding!

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Losing to TCU at home will be one of those losses about which you will always cringe (mine is Ohio State losing to Air Force in the Liberty Bowl; losing to a freakin' service academy!!!!). But I have faith in Stoops. He's a good Ohio boy.

We won our first games for the first time in I don't how many years.

Now I'm looking to see where Tulane's season opener (against Miss. State) is going to be, since it has been announced that Tulane will be playing football this season. I've heard Starkville, Jackson, Houston, Lousiana Tech, and LSU mentioned.

At least Letterman's Fighting Killer Cardinals are Div 1-A.  Smile Agree with the big games at Miami and then home at the Doyt with the Rockets. I would also have to say Western at home will be a good game too. I agree with the run the table though...even though I really dont want to see them win the conference title and be stuck in Detroit. We can only hope some year the MAC falls apart, kicks out the bad teams...or Toledo, BG, Northern, and Miami and defect to a better conference.

Sometimes you have to do what is best for the team long term. Bomar is a redshirt freshman and will start against Tulsa. They have him for a couple years at least. Build the program around him and they'll be back to the title game, legitimately, in no time. OU obviously didn't belong there last year, but welcome to the BCS world. Did they belong in the Sugar Bowl? It was a 21-14 game, they didn't win their conference, etc...so most will say no. However, what if they won? Unfortunately until all conferences are required to have a championship game, its hard to take that in as a factor.

Jason White was definitely important...as he was a clear leader. Much like Josh Heupel. Nate Hybl wasn't bad, but was caught in the shadow of Josh. Now Paul and Rhett are in the shadow of Jason and Peterson is held to extremely high expectations.

GO IRISH!!! I don't like to base seasons off of one game, but it was nice to see Notre Dame play so well together, at least in the first half! The second half was a little "iffy" but you can't be perfect all the time! Marching to Ann Arbor is going to be a whole new ball game this Saturday! I don't expect a perfect season, but it was nice to come in and just run all over Pitt on their own turf.

Demolished Hawaii as usual, what was it, 63-17? Sorry, my brother's wedding was this weekend, so I didn't have much time to watch or even keep track of college football.....damn priorities....

I heard it was 21-3 at some point early, and smugly didn't even worry about it after, heh.

I am very VERY pleased at the outcome of the FSU UM game. Both teams have absolutely zero offense. And when the Criminoles come to the Swamp this year, Urban Meyer will show them a thing or two whether Jack Childress is the referee or not.

Yes, quite the game, and it would have been even better if my friend didn't get arrested on the way there.

Why did he get arrested in the middle of the day!? haha. One of the like Lehigh students arrested in the last two weekend, huh?

Good comeback GP...... by the way, what color is the sky in your new state? and does it impact your football loyalties?

My move up to Raleigh has not impacted my football loyalties dramatically. While I will cheer for NC State and hope they do well, I'm still a Gamecock fan first and foremost. The way I look at it, I'm just attending a school with a different reason to hate Clemson Big grin

And there is some serious corruption in the polling system, ladies and gentlemen...

This week's new AP poll:

1. USC
2. Texas
3. Michigan
4. Ohio State
5. LSU
6. Tennessee
7. Virginia Tech
8. Iowa
9. Georgia
10. Florida
11. Florida State
12. Louisville
13. Purdue
14. Miami (FL)
15. Arizona State
16. Cal
17. Georgia Tech
18. Oklahoma (WTF?????)
19. Boston College
20. Notre Dame
21. Texas Tech
22. TCU (2x WTF???? See #18...)
23. Virginia
24. Fresno State
25. Clemson

Now seriously...TCU beats Oklahoma, in Norman, which is the first regular season loss for the Sooners in sometime, and an embarrassing one at that, and not only is Oklahoma getting votes, they are ranked AHEAD of the team that beat them, just one game into the season, so logically there is nothing else to base the vote on besides one game...am I the only one who thinks that that is a total crock of s*** that OU is ranked and AHEAD of the team that beat them???
