Jackson, Mississippi?

Sun Sep 04, 2005 1:01 pm

My daughter's insurance company is sending her to Jackson, Mississippi on
Wednesday. What are conditions like there. Anything out of the ordinary she should bring? Thanks,

Yeh... diet pills. According to a National Geographic survey, Jackson County, MS, is the fattest county in America, in terms of percentage of obese people. I believe its around 40%

Hey TPAnx –

First, welcome to a.net and the uber-heated non-av forum.

Of course, common sense. Be extra vigilant. We’ve seen what the vermin in NOLA did during a stressful time. JAN is 150+ miles from ravaged Gulfport/Biloxi/Pass Christian/Pascagoula and about 200 miles from NOLA. I’m sure there will be many displaced residents there.

Just regular common sense; be extremely careful when going out at night, always be aware of surroundings. Of course, it’s the dog days of summer, so light cotton clothes (but she knows all about humidity if shes spent time in Fla).

Best to her!

Perhaps a Glock 22 or some other such piece of artillery. Like guns or no, that particular area of the country is not the most "user friendly" at the moment and while I have the utmost faith and condifence in the National Guard and the Mississippi State Patrol . . . I have no confidence they'll be in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.

Perhaps she ought to take with her an abundance of goods that she might distribute to any refugee she sees. Water, Diapers, anything that will fit in her trunk . . . just a thought.

Edit: And welcome to A-Net . . . strap in, hold on. . .  biggrin

Hahaha  Big grin

In all seriousness, I don't think Jackson is hurting too bad right now because of the hurricane, compared to everywhere else. However, knowing what Jackson was like BEFORE the hurricane, I would still suggest being cautious and having some sort of protection with her, especially if she is a female going to these houses and neighborhoods by herself. Hopefully she will have a coworker with her, at least.

On a side note, I've been to Jackson several times driving from Texas to Pensacola and it isn't a place that I like to stop at. I still haven't found one good portion of the city.

on a half serious note, Jackson hasn't been completely destroyed or anything like that, but i would suggest to you to make sure your daughter brings whatever she feels neccessary for a long trip. the majority of stores seemed to be closed and gas is near impossible to find in the area. let her know to take the typical items that everybody would deem essential.

Guarding them and keeping them relatively out of sight! One problem that is going on in New Orleans and Biloxi is that all the news reporters are coming in with ample amounts of their own supplies for their stay. Desperate people see this and do everything they can to get their hands on it all.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case in rural Jackson County Mississippi, wherever that is, because I know it's not near Jackson. Jackson metro area is made up of Hinds, Madison, Rankin, Copiah, and Simpson counties. And as somebody who has spent a lot of time in Jackson, I can assure you the women are as good there as throughout the rest of the South! Of course if you go into the rural areas where there's a lot of poverty, you tend to see more fatties. Must be all the fried chicken and pork skins they eat down there.
