Just Returned From Burning Man

Wed Sep 07, 2005 5:15 am

I went to Burning Man this last weekend.
It was certainly an experience. Over 40,000 people in a city that only exist for about 2 weeks in the middle of the Nevada desert sands 100 miles norteast of Reno.
Many artistic and creative people from around the world attend this event.
Some private pilots fly in to this event and some parachute in as well.

SlamClick was probably lurking around but I am sure someone added Extacy to his coffee.

Wait? Burning Man is real? I saw it on American Dad, but I thought it was fake.
Silly Islamic extremists, it's just a cartoon!

I was there. I was the guy in the suit, carrying a briefcase. I should have stood out.

Seriously I didn't go this time. We were too busy.

Way too expensive. $350 at the gate for nothing but a plot of alkali (not sand) Some old hippies have evidently overcome their aversion to capitalism.

edit: No it's not real. It does occur, every year around the end of August, near Gerlach Nevada, in the Black Rock Desert. But there is no way you could call it "real." It is colorful but unless you are really into narcotics, it might not be for you. I would go only in the same spirit that I go to a zoo.

I paid $250.
I should have bought the tickets back in March when they were only $60.

Bartering works well at Burning Man. It's a cash free society which is a good thing.
I am sure Burning Man helps the local economy. We got our car washing in Gerlach which raised money for Gerlach High School.
I knew to drive the speed limit as those cops were thirsty for speeding tickets.

I even chatted up with a few locals at Bruno's.
Very nice people.
Didn't talk politics though.

Otherwise there'd be "superfly ribs" on the menu.

Interesting place, Gerlach. I flew out of there one summer many years ago. There is a little airstrip right at the north edge of town. You probably drove across it. My passengers were all staying at Bruno's Country Club. The frame is still there of the windsock we put up on an upended railroad tie. I still like to get out to the Blackrock from time to time.

Did you visit "Dooby Avenue West" on the way out there? Some interesting things carved on rocks.

You mean they would shoot me for my opinion?
These were older guys and I didn't want to get them all worked up & angry.
I really appreciate the rural parts of America and small towns untouched by chains stores & establishments.
I got there at night so I didn't see much at all. I left inthe daytime and only stopped to take a piss somewhere south of Empire. I came across a rattlesnake too.
Scared the hell out of me!
I know the shrub part of the desert is full of them.

No there was hardly no marijuana at this event. Nevada is a zero tolerance state when it comes to marijuana. Most people are on Extacy.  wideeyed
I got dehydrated so I didn't want to do any of that stuff.
I ended up drinking tons of water and watching other people 'trip'.

Lots of cute nake women walking around. Problem is that people heve to bring there own portable showers which aren't that good. Many of them that were there for several days didn't smell that good.
My first night there I made out with a girl I meet from Denver. A bit too skinny for me but she had a cute face and smooth skin. Too bad her breath smelled really bad and had bad body odor.  Sad
I couldn't bring myself to doing it all the way with her so I played with her with my fingers and that gave her an orgasm.

It's funny you mention that Slam, because as a gag I really did wear a grey double breasted suit (with black Italian shoes and my hair slicked up with some gel) out there on Wednesday night because there was a formal party out near Thunderdome, and did the same the night of the burn. Got a few strange looks but most people got the joke so it was a big hit.

Did the playa dust get to you Fly? You could smell the stuff all over the place!

I stayed at a really cool camp. We had a big Indian tent with a bar, running water, couches and a generator for the sound system, fans, water pumps and the lights. Cocktails were served every day at 4 PM but the drinking usually started much earlier. It was like having a living room out in the desert.

Seeing Black Rock City at night is really something to behold for those who haven't been before. I was last at BM 5 years ago and it's gotten much bigger since then so it was even more overwhelming this time around.

Here are some pics of our camp and of the Man burning:

The burn was intense this year with all the pyrotechnics and noise. The ensuing fire was so hot that it generated vortices that turned into huge dust devils that went out into the crowd.

Also, for those who are not familiar with BM, you can check out a lot of useful info about it on SFGate.com:

I'll be damned!
I walked pass your camp. I should have mentioned a week before on these boards that I was going. I would have stopped by to introduce myself.
There was a guy out in front offering drinks but I passed it up. I was getting really dehydrated at that time and all I wanted was water and my sleeping bag.

Next year I'll do it right. I'll drink tons of water on the way up.
Me and my friends are trying to think of an act for next year.
I want to do a 1980s hair metal camp.
Lights, outfits, neon guitars, big hair and all.

Did you see the Soul Train?

That's too bad you didn't stop in when you walked by because we were serving water as well. I was lucky this year and never suffered from any dehydration, even though I was drinking half the time. Can't wait until next year.

Yeah, I saw the Soul Train out on the playa. Very cool.

BTW, where you camped?
