Wed Sep 07, 2005 10:22 am

Breaking news from CNN indicates the Mayor of New Orleans has just issued an order authorizing forced removal of people refusing to leave the city:

http://www.cnn.com/

I will provide a specific link when the full story is made.

All I can say is....its about damn time.

You think perhaps that Mayor  hissyfit  might have given this a little thought BEFORE the gawddamn hurricane hit?

Perhaps a few THOUSAND lives would have been saved?

Nagin told reporters Tuesday he wanted everyone out of the city "because it's a health risk."

"These citizens will have to be removed for their own good," Police Superintendent Eddie Compass told CNN.

Forced removal?

The Supreme Court issued that order a few months ago.

This was bound to happen eventually, I know people don't want to leave their homes... Its all they have left... but all they will get from staying in NO is a trip to the grave.

"The Louisiana Superdome was so heavily damaged during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath that it likely will have to be torn down, according to a spokesperson for Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco.

Katrina sheared away much of the roof's covering, and rainwater began leaking into the stadium when it was being used as a shelter of last resort for thousands of residents stranded by the storm."

WOW... That sucks....

Especially since the water tests today confirmed widespread ecoli and other diseases lingering around from the bodies, trash, damage, etc. I bet you'll see some type of quarantine for those pulled out from here on because of the risks involved.

If they don't want to go, just check back with each of them every day. Tag 'em and bag 'em when the time's right.

I don't know, but he sure is playing the race card at every opportunity. According to my SO's vanpool, he was on Oprah Winfrey's show, suggesting that the alleged slow federal response was a conspiracy against black people.

"Category 5 hurricane" doesn't mean much here in the Puget Sound and I doubt it means much more in Anchorage, Alaska, but I do know there aren't many things my mayor could say or do to get me to leave my home and my possessions (nor are there many places I'd feel safer). Nevertheless your 20/20 hindsight is remarkable. If only YOU had been talking like this two weeks ago.

I don't know what site you've been reading - but I assure you my sentiments haven't changed.

As for disasters, except for the 1964 ass kicking eathquake we took here, the occasional volcanic eruption, etc. nothing at all can come close. Nothing in the last 100 years can come close to Katrina, so I don't pretend to be able to empathize.

What I do is question stupidity when I see it. . .

Quoting Monkey Nuts: but I do know there aren't many things my mayor could say or do to get me to leave my home and my possessions (nor are there many places I'd feel safer).

And you'd be immediately placed into the Stupid category for getting yourself and your family killed.

Go to this thread, read my reply #143 and you'll see what I hope will open your eyes to the total fuck up the government of Louisiana and NOLA committed. Grab the document under the link in reply #139 and read it. It's ambiguous, lacking depth and detail, lacking several important sections, and was obviously left in a drawer. Once you read it if you can come back here and defend the actions of Mayor    I shall make a recommendation for a shrink or two for you.

The New Orleans Times Picayune, in a June 2005 front page story, warned residents of New Orleans that if a major hurricane hit, citizens were on their own, because the city had neither a plan to deal with the event or the ability to take care of them.

If that doesn't motivate you to leave in the face of a monster storm, what would?

Completing the evacuation of a major American city in less than a week is darn near miraculous in my opinion. Forced evacuation starting from the time the mayor (small "m") declared a mandatory evacuation (24hrs prior) probably wouldn't have saved many lives. Making use of available school buses would have saved more lives for less effort.... IMO...

No not really. A forced evacuation prior to the event would have just put cops lives at risk -- no apparent threat visible to people with guns... Maybe I'm cold hearted but the people who are dumb enough to not get out of the way of the approaching Mack truck need to have the earliest opportunity to explain their actions to the Man upstairs and without taking cops or other first responders with them.

We're Nuts: Unlike you, however, I am not so quick to give up on everything I have and leave just because a storm is coming.

Ok, this part first . . . what I consider important are not the material possessions I have. I consider my life more important. I consider my family's lives more important. I can buy more stuff . . . I can rebuild my life . . . I can work harder, work smarter, work longer . . . I put my ass on line long enough in my life voluntarily with a reasonable expectation of survival by being smarter than my enemy. That isn't the case with Mother Nature - as we've seen.

I'd certainly not LIKE taking off . . . but I can show you a load plan for what's going and what's staying. I'm crazy, I'm not stupid.

Everyone's Nuts: You are very quick to put anyone who isn't you into that category

No, not really, plenty of people are not me - are not like me - that makes them, well, not me or not like me. Stupidity, like respect, is earned. If you earn the moniker, I'll give you your sign.

Always nuts: Can I blame the death toll on you then? You should have done more to persuade the citizens of New Orleans to pack up and leave.

Sure, why not, at least it won't be PotUS's fault . . .  biggrin

If I thought there was more I could do, I'd have done so. My family got out of harms way. Most of my friends - including the A-Net friends - got out of harms way (two still unaccounted for  Sad ). I took care of the most important issues first - me and mine.

I think He's Nuts: but you should be more careful with how you use it, lest you appear an arrogant asshole, which we both know you are not.

I can probably give you several A-Netters names that will disagree vehemently with you  biggrin . I do freely admit to being arrogant, but the difference between being smart and arrogant vice being stupid and arrogant is that I survive. And if you look up asshole in any given dictionary, you might see my picture  wink .

Point taken. Perhaps if I made my comment regarding hiz  hissyfit  honor more rhetorical than accusatory you'd see where I was coming from.

I don't think you're cold hearted . . . my comments all week have been no sympathy for those that stayed put and had the means to evacuate (and take someone less fortunate with them).

I don't know in how far it applies to the US, but in the tourist spots in Thailand after last year's tsunami, many people, who used to own land close to the coast discovered by the time they got back to their property that big hotel and building companies had moved in and claimed the land as theirs. In many cases certificates of property had been destroyed by the tidal wave and the previous owners had no proof of ownership anymore, in many cases the title to the land was never officially registred as well, a family simply lived on this plot since generations.

I would want to make sure that at least I still own the land after the disaster.

Fortunately, at least as it regards real property records, the US is probably a bit more advanced than Thailand. No person needed to stay in NOLA to be certain that the Ritz-Carlton did not swoop in and build an annex where their house once stood.
