Katrina:Oprah Clips Vs Media - Not For The Weak

Wed Sep 07, 2005 6:13 pm

Yes another Katrina Post... so either get over it and exit now or read on if you have the stomach for it.

I'm a fan of Oprah Winfrey but not so much as to watch the show regularly if at all (about a year & a half since I've seen one).

After watching endless clips on the FOX News Channel, MSNBC & CNN.

The footage shown on Oprah (broadcasting at 1am PST--from earlier in the day I guess) is truly gritty and not for the weak hearted.

It showed the triage at MSY... the place is so overwhelmed with the sick and elderly and a chronic shortage of medical staff, they are simply taking those 'deemed too weak' and placing them into the makeshift morgue... to die in peace. Imagine is hospitals did that.

The scene inside the Superdome really explains how horrific it must have been in the dark in there. A pretty tough looking fella (interviewed by Lisa Ling) had taken his wife, daughter and a friend and choose to brave the streets and wait for help because the too many fights breaking out in complete darkness. Wandering the streets aimlessly killing time and searching for food.

A tearjerker for dog lovers-- Many pet owners who survived and made it to the Superdome, Convention Center and freeway bridges and made it with their pets to await rescue... were forced in many case to leave the pets right were they stood as they boarded buses for MSY, Texas and other destinations. A 24 year old guy who had a chow chow mix (age 15 years--and incredibly healthy) refused to board and leave his dog behind after esp. after the dog helped rescue the owners' friend prior to their arrival on the bridge (staging point). The correspondent offered personally to take the dog (and a few others) to the home they were staying in (up in Baton Rouge) until they could be reunited.

Their clips of the dead along roadsides, CC and the Dome was far more riveting than anything aired on the networks. Absolutely stunning visuals... and certainly not for the faint hearted.

Tomorrows show goes to Mississippi and they'll show what John Travolta and others did to help alleviate the pain and the strain of resources already in place.

If Oprah's female fan following is tuning in to this... there's no doubt in my mind that Congressmen/women returning to work early this week...will wish they had not. Their phones are going to need the ringers replaced by the end of the day.

This is something I've never understood. Many people (myself included) think of their dogs, cats & other animals as part of their families, not merely extensions of their families. We have laws in this country that protect animals from cruelty but we refuse to allow them into shelters. Shouldn't that also be considered animal cruelty?

I know from personal experience, when last years hurricanes plowed literally through my home, my pets were at the forefront of our plans for relocation after the fact. They were curled up with us in our garage after the front door blew in and the front porch roof blew off. I don't know if we gave them comfort, they gave us comfort or somewhere in between, but I wouldn't think about leaving without them - PERIOD!

I hear ya'... I'm afraid I'd be like that guy featured. My pooch comes with me or we both take our chances.

I know a lot crap on Oprah and all the reality shows are staged, rehearsed and contrived. But the correspondent made that offer, the guy grabbed him in death grip and cried like a baby... the the correspondent lost it too...

However, to give credit where it is due, there were veteranarian missions of bus loads of dogs evacuated where they could. It's a bowl of mixed bag reactions. Most looters with food were permitted to do so. some with clothes were permitted and others with an armful of clothes had them taken from them tossed into the muck. This larger with me as I heard one of the women on the Oprah broadcast say 'I've been wearing these clothes for 6 days....' Yikes...I don't think Moses had to put up with that...

I really don't know Mir.. I taped, I can make a Quicktime Mov. file and compress it but that might be 1000 copyright violations. Check her website (I'm sure it's oprah.com) or abc.com - which broadcast here show.. mostly likely a direct video link right there!

We have had those stories on the news here in SAT, where we are ass-deep in refugees. The SAPD, just like the police in the rest of the state are simply overjoyed at the fact we have imported the lower rung of Lousiana's socio-economic ladder. There are something like 250,000 new residents (some of which are temporary) in Texas, many of which are crack dealers, hookers, gang members, etc.

Apparently there was already a gang dispute at the camp at Kelly AFB. I heard it from someone volunteering there, I will be surprised if it makes the news though.

Being poor does not automatically make someone a criminal. However, MOST crack addicts, gang members, and petty criminals are poor.

I can't remember the last time I saw someone on cops who appeared to be making over say $50,000 a year. Either that or they are smoking a hell of a lot of crack to be making that much money and still be living in a trailer with their pants falling down.

Operah is full of SH&T. I know that she has to change her program because of the events of the hurricanes but she is getting too involved in the matter. I can't believe that she is the person that she has become, her show is nothing but garbage for the brain, why didn't she become just another Ricky Lake.

I'd certainly like to see this. As much as I cant stand her show, I still respect her as a human being and overall good person.
I am really curious as to what she covered in her presentation.

To all you other dips that want to dump on the victums and the poor, start another thread about that and have a feilds day.

Humans before animals, period. No, it's not animal cruelty, although if there's room, and the animal is small...but you're responsible if your dog bites someone.

I don't know if she did say this... but if so, she's absolutely right. We rallied around NYC after 9/11. And we came up short in New Orleans, ALA, Miss. probably because the lethargic authorities involved were of the very same ilk and minset as those in this thread who can't help but seeing "crack addicts, gang members, and petty criminals" and nothings else. Oh and crack vials'...

I think the issue here is that the evacuees need to be screened. How many child sex offenders do you think got relocated? How many people with criminal warrants? They are now scattered across the country. In a few months New Orleans will be the safest place in America to live.

Congratulations, you missed the point completely.

Please, quote for me the post where I said all poor people and only poor people are criminals. Now, since you have determined to make this a fight go out and find a statistic that most criminals aren't poor. Please let this statistic be from a reputable source; The US justice department would be a good place to start.

When you transplant all the people too dirt poor to move you get a disproportionantly high number of criminals. If there is a refugee camp in your area go talk to some people there and ask them about fights, crack vials, weapons, etc.

First, it's not a fight.

Second, no need to look for that statistic. It's quite evident that most criminals are poor. That wasn't my point. I was addessing your "I can't remember the last time I saw someone on cops who appeared to be making over say $50,000 a year." quote, which seems to me rather silly. "Cops" focus on drug dealers, car thieves, hookers and so on. You won't see your average WASP breaking the law that way, though your never know. My point was that among those making $50,000 a year you will also find criminals. Maybe different to your local ghetto criminals, but criminals nonetheless. Hence the Enron reference.

You have a good point here. It would be delusional to deny it and I'm sure the local police departments are well aware of this. Houston, for instance, is a city that has to be ready to deal with this new reality.

In any case, I don't think is fair to equal poverty to crime.

Is there a Hermes factory outlet in New Orleans? Or is it ratings week? I wonder?

Angle Network is good though. But I suppose you need the "pap" to promote it. I'll give her a solid 8.5. on this.

Absolutely, they are so hyped on 'looking out for the crackheads, hookers, pimps, etc... that when the get the bill for serious criminal (Enron, Halliburton-sized) rip-offs they have no way of putting it words. And because of their inabilities to get outraged about serious skyhigh crime will lead them to always keep taking it in the shorts while they're bent over counting coachroaches...

No... you did. As I said above, (and you as an accountant of people should understand this better than most) most people in this country, thanks to media projection, are better trained to 'eye' petty criminals while the real crime is stealing half the US Treasury right out from under your feet. It keeps happening and will continue to happen ..because the perpetrators know exactly how the know-it-all-masses like you think. You're looking left when you should be taking a peak at the right every once in a while... and understanding exactly what it is you're looking at.

Again, it's the ability to relate to petty crime since it's in the reach of most to see (first hand, media etc, accompanied by a very long and storied history of humankind) whereas the inability to truly fathom stealing a million/billion dollars completely hamstings the small minded from thinking outside that very small place.

 redflag
Not a SINGLE prison inmate was set free during this hurricane. Therefore such screening is not needed. That would be totally humiliating to be screened to check & see if you are a registered sex offender after loosing your house and everything you own in order to get food, water & shelter. How would the database be set up without electricity?
