Odd Tattoo Reaction?

Thu Sep 08, 2005 9:12 am

You know, I have more odd things that happen with my skin! Well here is another one. I have a B-52 nose art that was turned into a tattoo on my ankle. Anywho, it is about 4 years old now and the black ink that outlines the dragons wings, sometimes raises and becomes slightly swollen. You cant see it unless you actually look for it but you can DEFINATELY feel it. Other times it is perfectly smooth and soft like the rest of my skin. What gives!? This is something that has started happening off and on for the past 1/2 year or so. I know a lot of you on here have tattos, anyone else have a similar reaction? What the heck causes it? Is something bad going on with it? If I can find it, I will post a pic of my dragon here a bit later.

It sounds like an inflammatory reaction. Since tatoos rely on granules of ink (that are foreign objects) becoming trapped in tissue, it seems to me that tatoo sites would be more susceptible to bouts of inflammation.

You should probably mention it to your doctor the next time you have an office visit. If it gets any worse, seek medical treatment right away.

Uh, Red, that sounds scary. Why mention it to my doc? What could it mean?

Is the outline a different color than the rest of the tatoo? If so, you may have some allergy to some pigment used only in the outline. Doesn't sound too bad right now, but allergies can change over time, so it would be a good idea to mention it to your doctor. They could perform some allergy tests to try to pin it down.

Yes, the outline is black.

Hag Tag? What is that?

Another name for "Tramp Stamp" (Lower back tattoo).

So there is no black anywhere else on the tatoo? What I'm getting at is why the outline swells and nothing else. If the same black is used elsewhere, then it confounds the issue.

I've had the same problem with a tatoo of mine and I was told that it occurs because of the condition of the needle used to ink this part of the tatoo. It turns out the needles can sometimes develop a little hook on the tip from just being worn out. This can cause the skin to be pulled as the tatoo is made, and for some reason, cause the chronic problem that you stated above (even on an old tatoo).

Well, SWA TPA, you've glossed yourself nicely  tongue , but you still have not answered the fundamental question: Is the same black pigment used in the border also used elsewhere in the tattoo? From the looks of your svelte, sexy ankle (rogue coming out here), there is the same black pigment used in the lines inside the border. If that is true, then it is hard to understand any allergy scenario.

Whoa Roger! That's some tattoo! "Do the locomotion with me!" That song immediately popped into my mind when I saw it!

Logan- It is usually the wing (only the black outline) facing my toes or the wing on the right as you are looking at the pic. Sexy ankle? Naaah, it has too many towel impressions on it in that pic. I think that was taken on our fist day at the Atlantis Hotel in the Bahamas. I had no tan at that moment. Big grin

Logan

I would say the same ink is used in hte outline and some of the darker shading he has. I know in my case the outline and alot of the fill is the same color.

Nice ink man...

I've had reactions sometimes from the sun, where black will have a raised reaction even with sunblock, but that's the extent of it.

Logan I sat there looking at your last post thinking to myself "fist day? What is he talking about? Is that some celebration in the Bahamas perhaps?" After a few minutes I finally looked up at my quoted text. Duh! Ha ha ha. I will blame that error on the rum I had when I typed that.  Wink

Roger, I think the smoke and the B-52 are all the same ink as the outline. I really could not tell you though since I was too busy grabbing the counter and chair edges and biting my lip while I was being inked. I certainly was NOT interested in looking at what the man was doing on my ankle about that time! LOL!

A reaction to the sunlight eh? Well, I do live in Florida so it's inevitable to hide from the sun! I will have to pay more attention to the sun correlation next time!

Ya know, I just noticed something! The tattoo guy forgot to add the ears on my dragon! My dragon is hearing impaired! Shame on the tattoo guy! Now it looks odd since I noticed that. Bummer.

Mention it to your doc only because you're already concerned about it. There's nothing else that I can think of that it might implicate. It's most likely a localized inflammatory reaction caused by the ink. My comment was meant to be a general statement: any time you have a medical complaint, if it's getting worse, you should see your doctor; and it's always best to mention any concerns you have had since your last appointment, when you see your doctor.
