US Military Smuggled Vacationers Out Of Superdome

Fri Sep 09, 2005 1:42 am

The military got us out, which we were all thankful for

--Jenny Sachs 06 Sep 2005

Jenny Sachs, of Sheffield, told how soldiers had to smuggle her out of the New Orleans Superdome in secret.

She was one of about 30 Britons who, realising they could not escape the city, had fled to the stadium for shelter. The military told all non-US citizens to stay together for safety, Ms Sachs added. They later told them they would be secretly smuggled out in groups of 10 under cover of darkness as it had become too dangerous for them to remain in the stadium, she told BBC News. I can hardly wait for the congressional hearings when Condi gives her alibi, "I was out shopping for new shoes and attending a play on Broadway, Senator."

I love your sources... "legit government.org"  liar  Hilarious to say the least.

Did you read about the people the Mayor gave head of the line bus priveleges to during the Superdome evacuation? Equally impressive.  Wink

No shit. This has been reported all over the media plenty of times already, but if you've ever read the full report you'd know that the British vacationers were threatened, intimidated, and their women groped. You definitely don't want a foreign vacationer dying in the Superdome because of questionable circumstances. Pretty smart move on the government's part to isolate the Brits and get them out quick.

I don't think it matters what color her skin is. Her home wasn't destroyed and she had a place to go. The military did the right thing by getting them out, and sending them home. That's 30 less people to feed and worry about.

I saw and heard the British person saying that on TV last night. It was part of an ITV video report on British citizens holed up in the Superdome.

Interestingly, (if that's the right word), one of the other UK tourists interviewed separately to this report, said that public transport out of the city shut down on the Saturday before Katrina hit.
Huh?
Am I right in thinking that was around 48 hrs before Katrina arrived?
If so, never mind tourists, small wonder so many locals without a car, (which NO had a much higher percentage of compared to the rest of the US average), could not get out.

Thankfully someone here is making sense. I have to say that even though I sympathize with the people in the Superdome that lost everything their behavior was less than acceptable. They didn't help the situation with the looting and the rape and whatever else they did. I am glad our military got them out and think it was the right thing to do. No matter what color your skin is or how much money you have no right to behave like that no matter what the circumstances.

Is this the same sensationalist nonsense that created the whole war zone story with rapes, gun battles, etc?

I'm glad that they got them out. As said before, they were being threatened, abused, etc. They were in danger, and the military got them out of it. Well done.

Clickhappy, you're just NEVER happy with anything, are you?  stirthepot

Skin color had nothing to do with this and you know it. Besides, had the military NOT done their part to evacuate the foreign tourists you'd be screeching even louder!

Just pipe down and move on.

One or two of the British tourists I saw being interviewed made precisely the point that others on here have. That they had a home to go to, and that the other people there had nothing. That they felt awful about being moved out when everyone else was being left there, and that they felt guilty that they were getting preferential treatment, relating their experiences from the comfort of a hotel room in Houston. On the other hand (and this is perfectly natural) they also wanted desperately to get out.

A difficult one for both them and the authorities to deal with.

it really depends if the tourists were just a burden to the local rescue system or if they could contribute (e.g. after the tsunami in Thailand, some tourists stayed on and were actively helping in the rescue operations).
