Man Electrocuted While Trying To Steal Power Line

Sat Sep 10, 2005 7:09 am

"The man was electrocuted about 1:30 a.m. when the two threw a rope over the raised power line and tried to pull it down.

Budzius said the pair thought the line was a low-voltage wire, but it was actually a high-voltage line. "Roughly 12,500 volts," he said."

At least we won't have to slog through 15 threads on whether the death penalty is justified and if it should be applied to looting power lines.  Smile

Apparently this is a common problem in the ex-soviet Union republics and within Russia itself. They are trying to steel the cables for resale to junk dealers for money to survive. Problem is that many have no idea about electricity, so put themselves in mortal danger.

Bad idea - hot-tapping a live electrical line.

Worse idea - Hot-tapping a natural gas pipeline.

A friend of mine responded to a "loss of containment" event in Saskatchewan a few years ago, and found a 50 foot high column of flame, a pair of melted boots underneath it, and a cold chisel imbedded in a truck fender 100 feet away...appearantly, a farmer had tried to hot-tap the Trans-Canada pipeline to steal natural gas for his farm. Unfortunately, he didn't factor in the 1500 psi natural gas pressure, or the fact that the sparks from cold-chiselling his way into the pipeline (it's inch thick steel) would cause sparks that could potentially ignite the gas spewing forth from the newly created orifice.
Time...to un-pimp...ze auto!
