Santorum Blames National Weather Service For Katri

Sun Sep 11, 2005 6:43 am

What a dickhead.

In an interview with a local PA radio station, Santorum says that the National Weather Service failed to predict the storm's fury and that its warnings were "not sufficient."

http://witf.org/temps/FM/news1.shtml

Asked about Katrina by WITF, Santorum described weather service warnings for Florida, where the storm first made landfall, as, quote, “not sufficient.”
Santorum’s bill instructs the government to abandon weather prediction and data reporting efforts that duplicate private-sector activity. He came under fire when it was revealed that the head of State College-based AccuWeather, which would benefit, has given his campaigns thousands of dollars.

This guy is the worst of the whole lot, and that really says something.

Boy wait until Falcon see THIS!

This guy is a moron . . .

The whole damn civilized world saw it coming and saw it for a many days, before Florida, after Florida; before the Gulf Coast and after the Gulf Coast . . .

What a crock of shit . . .

I heard about the legislation meant to keep the NWS from giving out (for free) information that private companies could charge for. I also heard that the contributions from accuweather are, quite likely, what got Santorum motivated to act. All that I found disturbing in and of itself, but....

...now the same Rick Santorum who didn't want them issuing information is accusing the NWS of not giving sufficient warning? Give me a freaking break - if he had it his way they would not be issuing any information.

It's time we wake up and hold our elected officials responsible. But sadly, I bet many of the people who vote for Santorum will never even notice this little discrepancy - and if they do they will write it off as nothing and vote for him anyway because he shares their "values".

I guess Senator Santorum didn't get the memo reminding him that the only one to be blamed for this tragedy is president Bush. Therefore, he made an idiot of himself.

Well, Santorum is a "Christian"-maybe he should have pulled a Pat Robertson, and prayed the fucking storm away.

This guy is just on another planet. What a jackass.

Stow it, SFOMEX. Stop trying to protect Bush via the back door. It won't work. Btw, did you see Bush's latest approval ratings? I think the only ones who support him are you, B757300, and Boeing and Bravo7E7. Big grin

Senator Santorum’s corporate welfare.

He introduced a bill that would GIVE data collected by the NWS to private companies, like AccuWeather and WeatherBank. Info the public paid to collect with tax payer money. Note: private companies, like AccuWeather – based in his home state – would not have to pay fair market value for this info – they would be given it free of charge.

Senator Santorum is a jackass.

By his rationale, you could blame the 9/11 attacks on Boeing.......

Yeah Santorum wanted to shut down the public arm of the NWS because accuweather is a company based in PA. I made sure to call his office and give them my piece of mind about this. Santorum is a .

On a somewhat related note, I saw Brian Williams say on The Daily Show that there was a forecast put out by someone at NOAA that was chillingly accurate, but it was so seemingly far-fetched at the time that they didn't know whether to put it on the air or not.

Admittedly, the media has been sensationalizing these storms for a while, to the point where a "boy who cried wolf" complex developed. Even if that forecast had been made more public than it was, nobody would have believed it. The solution would be to have the media stop blowing things out of proportion, but that's against their nature.

It would be interesting to find that forecast. I'll have to look for it.

Actually, there were some lawsuits that named Boeing as a defendant regarding 9/11...This IS still the USA remember  Wink

Why do I get a sick feeling Santorum might be the next president, if our recent history keeps up?

I posted it in one of the Katrina threads from a couple of weeks ago. It was indeed unusally blunt for a WX statement...

Perhaps Santorum is reading from the same play book at Governor  cry  and Mayor  hissyfit  ?

ANC, Sen. Santorum is a radical imbecile, (to use your descriptive emotion icons) – Mayor  hissyfit  and Gov.  boggled  are nincompoops.

Here's the letter I just sent to Sen. Santorum:
Sen. Santorum:

In your continuing effort to push forth a bill privatizing much of the nation's weather forecasts (no doubt spurred in part by campaign funding you've received from AccuWeather) you have made a gross misstatement.
The National Weather Service continuously updated the forecasts and possibilities for Katrina's effects both on Florida and on the Gulf Coast. As weather forecasting remains an imperfect science, and Hurricane Hunter flights were unable to find measureable signs of hurricane force winds until just before landfall, there was no way for the NWS, NOAA or the NHC to accurately predict Katrina's strength. Luckily, Katrina remained a Category 1 storm during her travel across that state.
It seems to me that by criticizing the NWS forecasts for Katrina's Florida landfall, you may have hoped that this criticism would be misinterpreted as criticism of NWS forecasts for the Gulf Coast landfall. Indeed, this was my first impression when reading about your comments. This sort of "guilt by association" is the nastiest of all political moves. Let me remind you that NWS New Orleans issued the following warning shortly before Katrina's landfall in Louisiana:

I included the text from OPNLguy's link

There is no doubt in my mind that the NWS did everything in its power to warn the people of Louisiana, and that NWS's efforts saved more lives than the combined efforts of local, state and federal government. Your attempt to capitalize on the pain of millions is nothing but despicable - as much so as Democratic efforts to use "guilt by association" tactics to link the Bush administration to global warming and the hurricane itself.

Sincerely,
my name here
Up, up and away!
