DSL 1024 Now Available In South Africa

Mon Sep 12, 2005 12:07 am

I noticed that we have a rash of new members from our country on here, so I thought I would share this, from this month the fastest DSL connection has been increased from 512 to 1024 kbps.

We're at DSL6000 currently for most of the republic, with higher speeds (up to 25000) available in only very few cities. Still, there's hardly any use for 6000 not mentioning 25000.

I saw that as well on the T-Online homepage a few days ago.  Wow!

I am happy with my DSL1000, it is enough to surf the web and to download songs.

Lucky bastards. Most ive seen around my area is 768KBs/1000/2000 for DSL. There has been talk about offering cable internet as a utility if you will,in some areas, and the price was damn cheap too. All the telecom companies shit on that one, but I dont think a major decision has been made yet.

Andz although use it during 5pm and 7-9 am during business days and it can run slower than the 56k internet and im sure it must still be capped in terms of how much you can use. I have the 512 and during business hours i dont even bother to go online it sucks and downloading telkom slow you down on many sites to stop u chewing bandwidth cause they wont fix the problem the fuckers.

I have had 512 since it first became available here and I have no problems with speed, sometimes I come home to download because the line at work is too slow. The caps are 2, 3 or 4GB depending on your package, if you read the Telkom site it explains the shaping issue (limiting access to international sites) and I think it is reasonable.

We've got 2000 widespread for DSL here, and 28,000 being rolled out in the next few months.

My exchange is being enabled by the ISP doing it, but they look a bit iffy to me so I'm going to wait. General ADSL speeds are about to be hiked in the UK to 8Mbps. Prices are falling all the time, and the 28,000bps outfit are offering it at £20 per month for early takers.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

My phone company offers 8 MB/1 MB "full rate" ADSL at 49 EUR/month. ADSL2+ "full rate" 24M/1MB is also available from a competition, 69 EUR/month
