Al-Qaeda In NYC

Tue Sep 13, 2005 7:55 am

NEW YORK (AP) -- Hours after many New York firefighters gathered to mark the fourth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, a firefighter was arrested for attacking an immigrant worker and telling him he looked "like he's al-Qaeda," police said.

Firefighter Edward Dailey was arrested Sunday afternoon on charges of criminal mischief and felony second-degree assault, Police Sgt. Kevin Farrell said. It had not yet been determined whether the charges would be upgraded to a hate crime, he said.

Dailey, 27, is accused of breaking a piece of Plexiglas off a curbside news stand and throwing it at a 51-year-old man who works there, Farrell said. Dailey had said the man, an immigrant from Bangladesh, looked "like he's al-Qaeda," Farrell said.

The victim, whose arm was cut in the alleged attack, was treated at a local hospital and later released, Farrell said.

A woman who answered the phone at Dailey's home declined to comment.

Dailey was the class valedictorian at his FDNY graduation ceremony last year.

I hope they put Pailey through the ringer. There's no need for that kind of nonsense.

And honestly, for those who think it was just a heat of the moment issue, does NYFD really need someone like that to represent them?

Very unhelpful actions on this guy's part. It must be said though that only good education can breed tolerance and diversity. Start with the school system Dubya!

I was at the World Trade Center Sunday as the memorial was wrapping up, the fire fighters then left and filled every single "Irish" bar in Tribeca and Lower Manhattan.

There were lots of folks sharing stories and reminiscing about fallen colleagues over a few Irish beers, some over come with their memories and the large quantities of beer consumed probably got out of hand.

I can't blame them, after living through something like that where hundreds of your friends and colleagues are killed there's no doubt a certain amount of trauma and post traumatic stress which combined with the anniversary remembrance and alcohol brought everything back.

During the recovery operations at the WTC back in the fall of 2001, dozens of firefighters showed up to protest the method in which the wreckage was being removed. If I recalled correctly, they said it was being done too haphazardly and that their fallen comrades were not being treated with the proper respect. Some of them got violent and started clashing with police.

To his credit, at a press conference that afternoon, Rudolph Giuliani said if you're a firefighter or otherwise and behave in that manner and break the law, you will get arrested.

That applied to the firemen then as it does now. No one is above the law.

Had it been you or a family member or yours that was assaulted would you feel the same way? One may understand how or why it happened, but it sure as hell doesn't make it right or justifiable. If I'm pissed off with PTSD and had a few too many, I can't be blamed if I coldcock some innocent bystander?

I think I understand what you were trying to say, but the way that you said it may not have come out right, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt if you care to respond.

Not sure why they were in such a rush to remove all the debris so quickly, unless they were hiding something??

I'm with you B744F. Why the rush? Hell, they should have just left the debris and the remains of a couple thousand people, including over 400 fire fighters, police officers and EMS workers, laying around to rot for a few months.

To be fair, you made made a statement and didn't actually ask a question. However, here's a question for you: What would they possibly have to hide?
