Oh Dearie Me. The English Are At It Again :S

Tue Sep 13, 2005 9:10 pm

How long will the English media go on about winning the Ashes now? 10, 20, 30, 40 years perhaps?
40 years on, we still hear about Nineteen Sixty  censored  six, 2 years since 2003 and now this.
Watching Sky Sports News, they are wrecking a whole load of songs with their horrendous singing  Wink Although, to be fair, God Save the Queen was always a horrid song anyway  Wink Now they want to sing that Jerusalem song again, they've gone bonkers.
Can the English media please shut up, please shut up?

That's my rant over
When you hear the noise of the Tartan Army Boys, we'll be coming down the road!

They have just won the Elephant Polo World Cup!
Can't see them getting the pachyderms on to an open top bus though.  Wink

Well lets put it this way, in the unlikely event of a Scottish sporting win at anything they'd have trouble sourcing an open top bus. Lets face it with the lack of anything to see tourist-wise, no sporting success and an abysmal climate, they'd have to come begging to the English for a suitable bus  Wink

I'm just imagining the highly unlikely scenario of Scotland winning anything of importance. Would we EVER hear the end of it? I doubt it! It's bad enough we have to constantly hear about unimportant matches in which Scotland beat England in a competitive contest 40 years ago that's been dredged up by one of our kilt wearing friends from up North Big grin.

Call as back when you do succeed in something and then we can talk. Until then keep your jealousy to yourself, nobody likes a moaner!  Wink

I agree with Gkirk. The English press is painful at the best of times. I have a friend in work who can quote minutes/seconds when the final bell wnet in 1966, the exact moment Jonny Wilkonson became a god, and in 1982, the last time Aston Villa won anythng. Its just wrong.

Mind you they have been building up to this for 18 years or so.

And before anyone says 'bitter Australian', I would like to point out that I do not give a flying rats arse about sport. For me the Olympics is the opening and closing bits, it is the British press that I grow weary of.

Gkirk, keep up the good work.

No, if you were on the west coast of Scotland you would be a ned, however, seeing as you're not north of the border then you are considered a chav.

Better they keep harping on about something happy for a change. Saw the players ride past St. Paul's this morning. Quite a good crowd.

Xpat...you live in the US. You don't know the hell it's like when nearly every TV station is looking at the Ashes win etc.
Thank god for BBC Scotland though  Wink

Careful Kirkie, I appreciate these are hard times for any Scotsman, but let's not go too far, the BBC might actually think they're doing a decent job!  Silly

Give a few days, couple of weeks top, and all the celebrations will die down. After all, we English rarely win major sports events and on the few occasions that we do, every sports fan goes potty.

My bet is that the UK Governemnt is encouraging the celebrations in order to distract attention from the petrol crisis that is surfacing. My local petrol station is down to its last pump and there is a queue of cars strecthing for nearly 0.25 miles. Panic buying is hitting the streets and Blair is more concerned about the cricket! What's new about that?

True, but at this time with petrol prices sky high, and related strikes, only we would drive round London in an open top bus that does 4 miles to the gallon.  Wink

Well done to England and Wales... oh sorry, got that one wrong. Although it is the English & Wales Cricket Board and the team that faced the ashes had two Welsh players in it, I see no mention of Wales?

Kirkie it's been ONE DAY for feck's sake! Of course the media will report it. Are you saying that if Scotland actually won something then the Daily Record et al wouldn't be banging on about it.

I agree that 1966 is overplayed too much - for example the 2003 English World Cup win in rugby was IMHO a much bigger achievement in terms of difficulty but nobody talks about that any more.
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

Well according to Kirkie Scotland is world champions of something and we're not  Wink. Shows you how much our media reports the fact that we are still the Rugby world champions!

But you know, they constantly remind us of it and such, maybe he wasn't reading the right newspapers Big grin.

True. However, I happened to be in London the day they won. It's like the media here, they'll harp on about something until something new comes along.
