Americans And National Teams

Wed Sep 14, 2005 1:39 pm

I was listening to a comedy thing on the radio and they were commenting about how Americans never seem to get behind national teams.

I am an American living abroad and can't seem to get behind any one baseball, football, hockey, or basketball team. But I have been following our National Soccer team for many years.

We are unifed when our country goes to war but can't get unifed when our national soccer team makes the best of 16 in the World Cup, or our Women's soccer team wins the women's world cup. (Has done so several times) The U.S. mens volleyball is one of the strongest in the world. We argued for professionals to play on the olympic basketball team, yet when they came in third we just gave up. It just seems we can't be unifed behind our national teams.

Why is this?
Yes...I am not a KIX fan. Let's Japanese Aviation!

Simple, we've got more things to do then follow the U.S soccer team around the world. European and other countries have much smaller populations only couple of millions and it's like a family occasion when the national footblall team goes to the tournaments. We on the other hand have many people who could care less what other fellow americans think about the U.S team. The fact that many people don't care for soccer in the U.S doesn't help either. It was kind of sad when U.S beat the Mexican national team. Mexico who is a diehard soccer following country, beaten by a country that doesn't even recognize soccer as a major national sport.

Actually, it's more like a national day of celebration. We take to the streets and crowd into small bars just to watch our boys kick the collective asses of other countries football teams. Everybody in Sweden does not like football, but everyone likes watching the international tournaments, and I'm sure it's the same everywhere in Europe (except maybe Finland and Iceland, they don't tend to get anywhere the WC and EC qualifiers...)

Cheers
Mats
Sure, we're concerned for our lives. Just not as concerned as saving 9 bucks on a roundtrip to Ft. Myers.

Why is this?

A) Nobody cares about soccer in the US
B) Unless the Olympics are in the US, we don't care.
C) World cups 'don't count'.

actually i think it's because America is a melting pot, many of your inhabitants dont share the same culture, they dont even speak the same language....for example, when Turkey plays a soccer game...i kid you not 70 million people stop what they're doing, and even the president and PM go to the games....that's because our culture is more defined as a people, people of the same history and land. The USA is basically where everyone migrates to, and they become what i call second hand americans, so the whole patriot, bond to nation and american blood isnt really there.

Also, this is going to sound weird...but your nation's preference of sports is VERY isolated around the world, im not mocking at all, but im making a note, only basketball is something global that americans play, but your version of basketball is more of a show, with the paychecks and the big festivities...not many countries play ice hockey, basball you get my drift?

i dont think we will ever see people running around the streets if the usa wins the world cup or a large global sporting event, and it's basically because of who you are and where your ancestors come from
