Friday Serious Thread : Noise At Your Workplace

Fri Sep 16, 2005 6:37 pm

I work in a R&D team in a large open space environment, and I should have the following noises :
-people typing on their keyboards
-the occasional fixed phone ring
-discreet chat voices

These should enable me/us to work in a calm and undisturbed workplace.

What I have however :
-people holding meetings (not always work related) and speaking loudly on the desk next to mine
-cellphones ringtones. We work on those, yet most of my coworkers apparently do not know those have a "silent" mode. (okay, sometimes, *my* cellphone ring as well.
-We had a quite noisy coworkerette, talking very loudly (very high pitched voice) on the phone.
-Some coworkers (the aforementioned coworkerette included) sometimes listen to music without a headset... No comment
-And, the best, (only this morning hopefully) construction workers hammering the wall for a few hours 5 meters from me... Perfect...

What about your places ?

I work in a cubicle when I'm onsite at my clients' company. The guy next to me frequently uses his phone in speaker mode (even to dial the number he's calling) and he walks up and down the hallway while talking on his cellphone (pacing back and forth). Excuse me...the floor isn't your personal office!

I wear headphones a lot (to listen to music, not playing pilots!) and when not on road trips, work from home, noisiest it gets is Mrs Jafa watching Dr Phil in the bedroom next door.

You have my sympathies as some combinations of noises just jangle the brain and the nerves.

I had a "fill in job" once which necessitated standing on a huge vibrating table ( 20 ft by 15 ft) concrete was poured into a mould and I had to help it into the corners with a 5 ft long 3 phase (415 volt) vibrator...no job for the easily aroused i can tell you!!!

a lot of big screen tvs with different programs at the same time. several radio stations blasting. people cussing. people typing. people on their phones. people doing nothing.

and yet, we pretend we're professionals.

I work at Vodafone Headquarters... big open space... Lots of annoying ringtones, lots of typing, lots of talking and phone conversations... but it's better than being in a cubicle. Plus many in my department are away at a conference in Paris, so its dead quite today  bigthumbsup

I'm lucky enough to be one of only 3 people where I work to have my own private office, so don't have to put up with everyone else's noise.

Everyone else thinks my office is quite noisy as I have a large air conditioning system in the ceiling (and I'm the only one to have air-con in my office), lots of computers (though most of them are servers and fairly silent) and my big fan to keep the cool air flowing over me, as all those computers produce a fair bit of heat, though it's only really noticeable on the hottest of days.

Personally the noise doesn't really bother me, it's only very faint and I normally have music playing anyway.

But I suppose since I work for the MRC Institute of Hearing Research, my co-workers are bound to be a bit paranoid about noise levels ......  Smile

Statistically, people who have had the most birthdays tend to live the longest.

When you hear the noise of the Tartan Army Boys, we'll be coming down the road!

JT8D-7''s /15's CFM 56's and GE-34 and many other airplane engines.....Rivet guns....hammers pounding....Phones and people and radio's

It can get a little noisey here

Sometimes all you can do is look them in the eye and ask " how much did your mom drink when she was pregnant with you?"

We have an open plan office where I work; the idea being that in a sales team environment co-workers will be able to keep abreast of what is going on.
There are 2 noises that I find really annoying is ringing mobile phone and its no longer the standard phone tone.
A ringing mobile phone can be especially annoying when the person is already talking on their fixed line desk phone.
Another thing with noise is people talking loudly; these people need there own office.
Why fly non stop when you can connect

The door to the office is always open due the amount of coming and going, so there is quite a bit of noise from the shopfloor, which is distracting/annoying.

For example, there is a test bench just outside the door where they run up some of the smaller fans we make. They operate at anything up to 24000 rpm and can be earsplitting. Most of the guys on assembly have radios, all tuned to different stations. There's also air-tools, fork trucks and when the wind blows from the east, very low flying aircraft up from LHR. Add to that the phones, printers, fax machines and people in the office, then you'll see that we haven a little haven of tranquility  Wink
