Anyone In Or Has Been In Law School?

Sun Sep 18, 2005 4:42 am

Well Ive decided to complicate my life even more, be in school till i'm 25 and add additional debt onto my already outrageous student loans.

I'm going to Law School.

I had this epiphany on tuesday of last week, in my Legal and Ethical Issues in Communication class. I am currently enrolled in Journalism graduate school, and the program at the University of Iowa I am in allows me to get my JD (juris doctorate..law degree), and my MA concurrently. So I will come out of the program in 4 years total (3 more after this year) with an MA and a JD.

The MA in journalism will come in handy, as I would like to specialize in First Amendment Law. It seems like First Amendment law (Freedom of Speech, expression, etc...) would be a good fit for me anywho with my background in Comm and Journalism, and it First Amendment law actually matters, not that criminal law and tort (civil) law doesn't matter, but First Amendment law has direct implications on society and culture in general...

anyway, I am really excited about my decision, and I have already set things in motion for this to happen. I am taking the December LSAT, and have already started studying for that.

I haven't told the family yet, as this will obviously complicate things in my life and add quite a bit more student loans onto my plate. however, there are advantages to being a graduate student as well as a law student, and I should be able to TA at least half time for a year or two while in Law School. I also go to an in-state public school, so that makes the price a bit more reasonable.

Anyway, I'm looking for any advice or anything else i should know about this (law school, being a lawyer, etc...). Thanks in advance, and I hope I feel as good about this decision 5 and 10 years down the road as I do right now...

Let me tell you this from probably the opposite point of view you were expecting.
My Advice: DO IT!!
My Rationale: My Dad and My Uncle did it, then not terribly long ago my Aunt did it. They all have more money then they know what to do with, and lead VERY reasonable lives. I, however, never made it past 2nd year undergrad and struggle for everything. I know who's to blame and I face that son of a bitch every morning in the mirror, but if I had it to do over, I'd definately get through graduate school, and law is noble if you make it so. Just don't become an ambulance chaser!!

Don't become fixated on a particular field of law before you've been in school for at least a year, and don't be blinded by what you studied as an undergraduate. You might find something new that really motivates you.

Don't forget, you can go on a mission to Latin America in your 1L year and suddenly graduate the same year at a top 20 law school (UT Austin). After that, with pretty much no schooling, you will get a job at a major aviation law firm. Look at me, I did it.

Signed,
AA777jr

Ok, so now for the reality. Law school is a trip for sure. Make sure you REALLY want to do it because at many schools you will be surrounded by ultra-competitive a$$holes who love to screw others over and talk behind their backs. Combine that with an administration that is only concerned about being an alumni mill and it is a recipe for disaster. On the bright side, there are many professors and students who really love the law and who will inspire you if you let them. That said, I want to repeat, if you really love the law and truely want to be a lawyer, go to law school.

Signed,

This happens everywhere. get used to it!

law school is nice, if you have the money, time, energy, and desire to do it. Get ready for a mental boot camp, you will be overwhelmed on purpose.

If that is really what you want to do, then best of luck to you!! I have been a lawyer 18 years and can tell you law school was very tough. It takes a lot of discipline and hard work and even "bright" students don't always do well, whereas some just seem to "get it". You have to spend a LOT of time studying.

I specialize in litigation representing health care concerns and insurance companies.

Don't think about specializing now, it is too soon for that. And don't focus on making lots of money. The reality is that if you probably will make a decent living, but not be rolling in dough. Here in NYC there are millions and millions of lawyers (or so it seems!), so competition is keen.

I also went to Case Western Reserve in Cleveland--class of '87.

Good luck!!

Thanks for the responses, it definitely made me think about some things, and the reality is...

for the first time since i was 17 (when i was 100% sure i wanted to be a pilot...haha) I am 100% sure about what I want to do again. These past 5 years or so have been a rollercoaster, and I've had many options come my way, and nothing really *clicked*. I completed all the requirements for my aviation degree, but with the way everything in aviation is now, it's just not worth it for me to go that direction. Hopefully not being involved directly in aviation will allow me to maintain my passion for it.

I went to J-school because I like to write, and I've been told I write very well, and if nothing else it would make me an even better writer, which is not a bad thing at all. I am very interested in law and have been for some time, I just never really had a chance to look at it other than from a casual perspective. But now as i can look at it through more focused lenses, I can see that it will definitely be a good place for me to go.

Thanks again for the responses.

Yes, I had Katz for Crim and Crim Pro. He was a lot of fun! I had Mehlman for property. It's been so long I forget the names of the others!! Kostrinsky was there, but I didn't have her.

It was a great school. Lots of changes I see from the alumni magazine. I haven't been back there since graduation!! I loved the library and miss it to this day. We had Justice O'Connor visit. She spoke in the Moot court room. Nice funny lady.

If you are a first year, make NO MISTAKE and get the study guides (Gilberts, Emanuels, etc.). I never found the nutshells too helpful, but some did.

I lived on campus the first year--Clarke Tower--but off campus was better.

Unless you want to practice in California then they are worthless. You need to go to an ABA school to be a "real" lawyer.

Regardless of where you want to practice, diploma mills are worthless. You'd be better off burning your dollars.

Yeah, Cleveland Heights. I lived on Overlook. If you like food gotta check out the Westside Market. Nothing like it here in NY, as you probably know.

Don't tell me to get used to something. I was stating my opinion on something I have experience with, so get used to it. Also, it doesn't happen everywhere. Having had experience at 2 law schools as well as having talked to faculty and students alike, there are some places far worse than others.

My Dad was a Judge (he's back in private practice now) He just finished a book on the 4th ammendment, and has FOR many YEARS taught a brief writing course @ UMiami. One point he repeated to me over and over again as a frustration of his job as an apellate Judge was that he very often got briefs that left a lot of open questions and were poorly written. Mixing Journalisim and Jurisdoctorates (IMHO) will ensure that you will have a good carreer, because you should be able to effectively convey your message to the Jurists you are trying to win your cases in front of.

It is a very low ranked Tier 4 law school. You should go for somewhere else unless you have some specific reason to go there.

Kaplan also prepares you good for the LSAT here in New York. Of course if you can get in to begin with that must prove that you are intelligent and capable of handling the workload.

I meant that if you get into law school you should pat yourself on the back and stop worrying. If you were selected that means you demonstrated the potential to be a good canidate for their academic law program. Many people panic when they recieve their acceptance letters, thinking about all the hard years of work that's left. Just relax and be confident in your abilities. This is no time for any low self-esteem BS.

One more piece of advice..... You need to be absolutely confident in your abilities and trust yourself. There wil be a point when things will get tough and you may reach your breaking point and you may want to bail out. But KEEP GOING. If you ask every accomplished professional if at one point they felt overwhelmed and considered quitting they will say yes......

The truth is that Law School is not that hard. A lot of it is mental. Everyone wants to make Law Review or ger selected for bla bla bla.... just try your best. Study a lot, but don't lose the forest for the trees. Know the law first, then know the rest of the fluff.

Good advice. Don't allow yourself to be sucked into being one of the jerks. Law is a severely inbred profession; a number of your classmates will be certain that they are entitled to success by virtue of their surname, and the saddest thing of all is that for many of them, that is true.

Nonetheless, the practice has many rewarding elements, and on balance, I do not regret my choice.

Remember this, though: when someone tells you that "grades don't matter," they are hoping you'll slack off while they bust their butts to top you in the class rankings. Grades matter. Just be sure you manage to have a life, too.

SMU here in Dallas publishes a quarterly Aviation Law Journal and host an annual Aviation Law Symposium. They do not have an aviation law program per se, but they are a great resource for aviation law.

My old alma mater is pretty significant in aviation law issues.
