Christmas Season Starting Too Soon?

Tue Sep 20, 2005 3:21 am

I remember that when I was a kid (not that long ago - I'm not in the A.net  grumpy  old  git league yet) the stores started putting up Christmas displays in late October/early November. Well, last weekend I went shopping and oh surprise, the department stores are already selling Xmas ornaments! WTF?!  crazy

Is it just me, or this whole Christmas marketing strategy has gone way too far? What next, Xmas-themed wrapping paper for my birthday gifts (mid-July)?

Ho-ho-have a nice day!

Only difference is that some parts of the world, you need a winter coat for all seasons. Some card shops have Christmas cards in already. I only have three more pay-days until Christmas.

Funnily enough there was a feature on this on BBC Radio One earlier. People were asked to send in photos of all things festive that they saw this month, and they were inundated.

Christmas is definitely way too commerical these days. But hey, it means more chocolate and presents for me.  bigthumbsup

Any decoration before Halloween is ridiculous, and it should really wait until at least after Thanksgiving. But what do you expect when stores think they can make a few extra dollars by starting Christmas a few months early.

I have already seen Christmas cards for sale. Who in there right mind buys Christmas cards around 3 months before Christmas.  Confused It is amazing how companies can stretch out festivals, to such an extent, I'm surprised they have not started putting up Easter eggs for next year.  Big grin

If I didn't have a wife and family (IE something to loose) I would threaten to burn down any store with Christmas stuff in it before the Thanksgiving turkey was done being cooked. But as I do have something to loose, I'll just sit back and dream that my words can be inspirational. Though OFFICIALLY I say anyone who acts on THIS idea is dumber then MD-90, B744F, September11, and the deaf-commedy-jam twins combined.

I actually look for the first mention of Christmas in late August. This year was no different. I forget where it was, but I saw a sticker that said something to the effect of "great idea for early Christmas shopping."

If only we could get the Christmas season to end sooner, like maybe before it starts.

To quote Lewis Black:

"There was a time when Halloween was Halloween...And Santa wasn't sticking his nose in it!"

YES!

Anyone watch Monday Night Football tonight? Guy dressed as Santa watching the game. It's SEPTEMBER!

I'm getting sick of Christmas starting in October. It's like everyone has to start shopping as early as possible. It's ridiculous. Christmas is no longer about a holiday, it's about presents, and shopping. It's sad, really.

Not to mention that it was freakin 100+ degrees inside Texas Stadium. Of course it was a joke, but man, talk about a true fan. Forget those shirtless guys in freezing temps...

A local restaurant had their "Book your Christmas function" banners out just after Easter. Many of the charities (RSPB, RNLI) had Christmas cards in their catalogues which arrived in July. The commercialism really is ruining the festival.

In the UK we also seem to be shifting away from why there is a celebration in the first place. The whole thing is becoming sanitised for fear of offending sections of the population - this in a supposedly Christian country.

I have seen for several weeks now a new lawn decoration for Christmas. Look, it is 80+ (F) degrees out, can't you wait or are you sooooo desprite and greedy you can't wait. I find the hyperearly displays of seasonial items to be very offensive. I saw Christmas stuff in a WalMart last week where the school supplies were displayed 3 weeks ago. Part of the problem is that so much of the crap comes from China with a 6 week or more shipping time, so it has to be put someplace so in time for selling.
Worse, is that probably 80% of the gifts will come from China or some other anti-christian country where workers are virtually enslaved. Please, I would like some choice as to where my products come from, including from the USA or even Mexico. I would also like to see any religious items as to Christ only come from countries that have religious freedom and Christians, like Mexico or even Taiwan or Korea.

WHAM !!  eyepopping  Shelves full of Chrissy Cake mix, Chrissy Pudding Flavoured Muffins (a new tradition ???), Little Icing Sugar Santas for decoration.... and sachets of mixed spices for making mulled wine....

I was half expecting a display of Easter Eggs by the Pick`n`Mix  wink

Well, as someone who's wife works in retail, there's no doubt in my mind Christmas season starts WAY too soon. My wife started her 6-day a week work schedule this week for the, you guessed it, Christmas season.

Hell, it was almost 80 in CLE yesterday. No time to be thinking of December 25th!  Big grin

Halloween hasn't stuck as a holiday here, but I agree... Ok, could they AT LEAST wait until the kids are out of school after Oct. 15?
