NFL Week 3-How'd Your Team Do?

Mon Sep 26, 2005 7:04 am

Well, the Browns didn't play a bad game aginst the Colts in the dome, but made some dome mistakes that cost them in a 13-6 loss.

Antonio Bryant dropped a TD pass, when he got slammed by two DB's in the end zone. Plus Dennis Northcutt, for the 2nd time this year, had a punt return for a TD nullified by a penalty-a very, VERY questionable illegal block in the back penalty. But that's the breaks of the game.

A few other week two highlights-and I didn't watch as close as I normally do, as I watch the Indians drop an excruciationg loss to Kansas City today-but Cincinnati is 3-0, and Green Bay is 0-3?

Your takes.

He's certainly distracted thats for sure . . .

But take into account:

Lost his father . . . (and played one of his best games ever same weekend)
Wife diagnosed with Cancer . . .
Katrina obliterated his hom . . .

He's got a few things to be concerned about . . .

STILL!!! The defense in GB rather sucks at the moment . . .

Hell, even in pre-season the D was the worst I saw.

I still hate the Packers for that Desmond Howard "incident" in the superbowl.  brokenheart

They can't lose enough. Meanwhile the Pats are losing starters like Larry King loses wives, and they're still within 3 of the Stillers (jag-offs).

Tell me about it! This game has been so damn frustrating to watch. It feels as if they're down by 20, when it's only a 3 point difference.

Not any more! 17-13 Pats now. It's really a tribute to the depth that the coaching/management of the Patriots put together. Randall Gay is out, and his replacement gets injured on the first play, and manges to struggle back. Rodney Harrison, the heart and soul of their defense is badly injured, Matt Light, one of their most seasoned offensive linemen goes out, and they still manage to lead. They really have controlled the game, but a few mistakes (OK, several mistakes) took points away from them. They should be up by 17 right now.

Get your ass to ATL Weds, and we'll talk.

And the Pats win, 23-20. I'll take getting stomped on like that any week of the season. Meanwhile, Green Bay looks like the Sisters of St. Lameass.

Raiders @ Eagles...

Thought this one was going to the Raiders by the looks of the first half of the game. They kept getting good field position on kickoffs (due to Aikers being injured) and they had good players on offense and defense. The game should've been theirs had Janikowski been able to kick a 37 yd FG and the Raiders had not 'shot themselves in the foot' with penalties. The Eagles had an injured McNabb and a FG kicker who could'nt kick anything outside 30 yards and, yet, the Raiders still could not come up with the 'W'.

Even the Arizona Cardinals? Damn, how long are they going to be the suckiest bunch of sucks who ever sucked? I really feel bad for them, I mean, I like good tough competition, and they just don't have it. A good deal of people thought that the Cards would be a sleeper in the NFC - well, they were right in a way, they certainly are sleeping.

I wasn't pleased with the Pats today (I don't know how many curse words I screamed at my tv during the game), but it sure feels good to get out of Pittsburgh with a W, especially after losing to Carolina last week.

Once again, so much promise, so little execution. At least we have a qb playing now who can get away from the pass rush. Problem is when they hit him he drops the ball like a pinata drop candy. It would also be nice if we gave the ball to the rb more than 10 time in the game. But when you are down 20 its not exactly the best time to run. Maybe sometime we'll figure out that we shouldn't cut lineman that go on to start (well) for other teams. The O-Line is a joke, the D-Line is decent and has some potential stars, as does the rest of the defense. But not when they get left on the field the whole game.

The Bengals continued to play well. I expected the offense to have a difficult time scoring because the Bears' defense is strong. Unfortunately for the Bears, it seems their lack of offense will cost them some games this year. Palmer went 16-23 for 169 yards and and 3 TD's. Houston should expect an ass whoopin next week.

I'm a big supporter of the Bengals. A once storied franchise, they've gone through some pitiful years. As a Patriots fan since 1970, believe me, I can sympathize. I hope they bring some major success to Cincinnati. My Aunt and Uncle have lived in Lexington, KY since 1973, and I've been to see the Reds and the Bengals back in the 1970s, and I still have a soft spot for them (not the F-in' REDS though).

Good to see some fresh blood.

Storied? With all respect, Logan, they've had about 10 good years in their entire almost-40 year existence. Yes, you have TWO over us, with two Super Bowl appearances, but the Bengels organization is hardly "storied", in my view. The "storied" part is who founded them.

Having said that, they look like the real deal, with Marvin Lewis in total control now, and with an offense that is putting up some impressive numbers. I'll reserve judgement for a while longer, but they're on the right track.

I'd like to think the Browns are about two years behind the Bengels, with the improvement Cincy has shown in the last few years.

The Giants are playing now against the Chargers and are down 28-20 in the third.

I really wish these announcers on ESPN stop calling LaDainian Tomlinson LT! LT was the best Giants linebacker of all time (and possibly the best LB in all of the NFL) Everytime they say LT I think Lawrence Taylor was on the field.

Well, Falcon, you're right, except I'm a Patriots fan (Logan...and all that). I overused the "storied" word. I remember well the Bengals of the 1980s, and fondly. I remember the famous quote from Sam Wyche when the Bengals fans were throwing shit on the field: "You're not Cleveland."  Wink

OK, storied is the 1972 Dolphins, 1976 Raiders, Stillers, 49ers, Cowboys (uggh), etc. I'd just like to see parity bring the small market back into the NFL. And as for the Browies, I love Romeo Crenell, and I'll always root for them as long as they're not playing the Pats.

Looks like the Patriots have a new motto:

Last minute game winning field goals... they're not just for Super Bowls anymore.

Adam Vinatieri pulled it off again  thumbsup  with one second on the clock.

Likewise, the Eagles w/an injured David Akers did similar to beat the Raiders with only 9 seconds remaining.  thumbsup

You sated the Chargers had their 2nd and 3rd team defense in during that game? Hogwash, dude. That doesn't happen in a regular season game. Two touchdown lead doesn't justify putting in the scrubs, 7E7.

So how did 24 players come into play on Defense and 18 for the Giants? So what was that about what I do and don't know about Football? I think I'd know when a guy makes a takle or get's flagged if he's a second stringer or not. Then again, you're a Browns fan, so it's not like you're familiar with a winning team and how games are won anyway. BTW... Nice TE you got there.... Winslow.... That's f-ing hillarious....

Another thing I can't believe (and every other real football fan in here can't neleive), you're defending an asshole who thinks he's bigger than the game.

I don't consider a sack with 3:55 to go, Boeing7E7, and the game over, something to crow about. I think if you look at ANY NFL team, they will play 20 guys on defense in any game, but to say that the Chargers had their 2nd and 3rd team defenses in, with the game in the balance, is pretty ignorant. You ever hear of different coverage packages, like the Nickle? Or bringing in an extra linebacker or lineman? That doesn't mean they had the 2nd and 3rd stringers in there, dude.

Again, you dont' have a clue.

I pin this loss squarely on the defense! It' like they didn't even show up for this game!

LT made your line and LB's look silly.

The Chargers only play the Nickle Defense. You obviously don't know much about Football. BTW... When the Secondary slides into prevent, eveyone looks like a super hero.

STILL!!! The defense in GB rather sucks at the moment . . .

Actually, they held Cadillac to 77 yards until those late longer runs, and of course, the big plays against Cleveland killed them too.

Overall, GB's defense is playing much better than last year in almost every regard. Keep in mind- new DC, the third one in as many years, lacking talent in many positions, and starting rookies to boot. I'd say Bates' scheme and those players are going to jell as the season goes on.

The Packers' problem is largely on offense. Favre does look bad. Making poor decisions. The Bucs dropped 2-3 more INTs, and although Ferguson should have fought for that last one, Favre underthrew it and threw into coverage while leaving other guys (Murphy on that specific play I believe) wide open.

Favre is throwing off his back foot even without pressure, horrible mechanics, bad decisions, not escaping when he should, he just looks rough.

They can't run, Ahman Green looks older, slower, can't make things happen on his own, the line is incoherent and needs a talent infusion. Flanny's done. Clifton and Tauscher are the only linemen worth a damn right now.

Coaching is abysmal all the way around. Sherman has to go.

This team scares no one, they can't defend Lambeau and it's going to be a looooong season in Titletown.

ROTFLMAO. No team plays one defensive scheme, 7E7. None. Why? Because it would be too easy to adapt to. Every team has to show multiple fronts, multiple sets, multiple packages, or else even a mediocre QB would rim them to shreds.

I know that; most people on here who follow the game know that. You don't, which is why I dismiss what you say out of hand.

Oh, and according to Boeing7E7, if you're a Browns fan, you can't possibly understand football. We don't understand WINNING, but most of us understand football-far better than he does.  Smile

You obviously don't know jack about the Chargers then do you? Maybe that's the Browns problem. Oh wait, maybe it's all the money wasted on Winslow. San Diego didn't even want this problem child.

You dismiss it out of hand because you're a Browns fan. Which explains most of your frustrations in life. That's the difference between you and I. I know my team will suck 6 out of 10 seasons and live with it. Yours will suck just as often, but you enter the season full of hope that every year will be the year only to be disappointed in the end.

Another win for the Bucs...though it wasn't all that pretty but the Caddy kept churning up the yards.

With a home game this week against Joey Horseshit and the Lions, 4-0 is entirely possible!
This is the Last Stop.

I understand football, my friend. I understand a team that does NOT show multiple defenses will get creamed. I know that, and I can't help it if you don't.  Silly

Good God, what does following ONE TEAM have to do with understanding the game? Stop making a complete fool of yourself. No use arguing with someone who bases his whole arguement on what team a person roots for.

Talk about ignorant? Incredible.

 rolleyes

Whatever. You obviously didn't read my take on the Browns this year. I'm not one of these pie-in-the sky jerks, who picked the Browns to go 10-6 this year. I said they'd go 5-11 or 6-10, if they were lucky, and that they have a LONG way to go. They have played better the last two weeks than I would have expected, and I see some hopeful signs for this team. But I belive they're TWO YEARS away from being a credible playoff team.

Being full of hope can mean many things-for me, it's to see improverment game-over-game, and, going into next year, being $30 million under the salary cap to help improve the depth of the defense. That's all I'm looking for this year. Anything above that is a bonus, after the nighmare of Butchie here for the last 4 years.

Too bad you're so delusional.

Maybe because San Diego already had depth at the TE position and rather than waste a high pick on another TE decided to address a weakness at another position? Believe it or not, teams tend to draft based on positional weaknesses, thus the Bolts that year went to address what they perceived was a major weakness at QB. Although if you recall, San Diego ended up drafting a certain problem child at that position, so you're living in a glass house on that one. As for your ridiculous assertion that teams only play with one defensive scheme, excuse me while I laugh. They may use the nickel defense as a base scheme, but they would never ONLY use a nickel defense. Want proof?

http://www.chargers.com/news/headline_print.cfm?news_key=993 little blurb at the bottom...He was replaced in the base defense at right cornerback by rookie Quentin Jammer who was replaced in the nickel and dime packages by Davis Sanchez So gee...nickel AND dime packages? Doesn't sound like "only" nickel to me.

At any rate, as already stated, my Steelers lost due to a last second Adam Vinatieri field goal. When Pittsburgh tied the game, I knew we hadn't burned enough time off the clock. I don't wish the guy any harm or anything but man...just once I'd like to see him choke badly against the Steelers. Here's hoping we meet up with the Pats again in the postseason and get a chance to take some vengeance. Good job by New England playing with all those injuries though. Going into the bye week should be good as it should allow Roethlisberger's shoulder to heal a bit.

Uh... Nope. Gates was picked up undrafted and was a total gamble. The other tight ends are a joke and it showed in week one.

But obviously the Chargers thought enough of him that they didn't draft a guy who was rated #1 on most boards. It wasn't a matter of them not wanting Winslow. It was a matter of priorities, as GP pointed out, and they felt they had other pressing needs.

Any QB can put up those numbers in a prevent Defense situtation with the second string in. He didn't do jack when the game was close.

They use a 3-4. There aren't many schemes you can have in a 3-4. If you had actually played a 3-4 at some point in life you would know that it's a basic Nickle package, a prevent Dime and a 4 down (with 1 linebacker) goal line. It's a very simple scheme designed to be fast and cause confusion. When you drop to a Dime package, you give up chunks at a time and slam it down inside the 25 with a Nickel. This is why a QB would have a good day if they are behind most of the time and a running back would be neary non-existant.

There was none, zero intrest in Winslow. Period. When the question came up in the media (obviously being Kellens kid), the Chargers said hell no. He was viewed as a liability and a problem child. Looks like they were right. Some teams learn from mistakes (aka Cryin Ryan), although that had more to do with an arrogant Bethard than anything else.
