Today Was The Biggest Day Of My Life!

Thu Sep 29, 2005 2:38 am

I'm sure I won't be the first person this has happened to, but when it happens to you, you sure feel like you've been hit by a train!

Went to work this morning and me (plus my partner who I work with) and the rest of the team were summoned to a meeting at 10am. We sit down and within the minute, our big wig manager tells us we're all out of a job as of 31 Dec!

I have longed for this for years but now it's happened, I'm sh***ing myself - I've been there 23 years! Talk about a change in our life!

I have absolutely no intent of ever working in insurance ever again as it's soooooooo boring. Apart from starting 2006 with a 2 month round the world trip on some of our redundancy cash, what on earth do I do next???

The world is a book, those who do not travel read only one page ....

Sorry to hear that.

I was in a similar situation quite recently.

Most important things:

-Don't drive yourself crazy
-Take your time
-Do the things you have always wanted but couldn't because you did not have the time
-Let all your friends and family now that you are looking for a new challenge; activate your network
- Enjoy the fact that you will have more time to spend on  Wink

Things will eventually work themselves out, it might just take more time than you expect

Hang in there!! I'm going through the same thing. I am a lawyer and after 18 years with my firm threw in the towel. I worked in insurance and agree--booooring. I grew to hate it and figured this is the only life I have, so take a chance. Well the $$ I have won't last long so I need to get a new job. But what? People keep saying, "do what you always wanted to do". I still don't know what that is.

I quit working a month ago and house and yard have never been so clean!

I know it will take time to get things settled but I believe the next phase will be better.

good luck and know a lot of others around our age are doing the same thing.

Same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. Got a call from my boss while on vacation in Hawaii - "We've been sold and the Seattle office is being closed and we're all losing our jobs"!

Start networking your contacts from your current job NOW. That's the most likely way that you'll find a job. I am now working for a company that was my client at my last job.

It sounds like you got a good severance package. Don't blow it - you might need it. Some of my coworkers were out of work for over a year.

Definitely plan on taking some time off though. I had six weeks off and that was really nice. Also since we were all being laid off nobody enforced our working hours so we all worked no more than 20 hours a week for our layoff period (which was over a year for me - I was in the last group to go). That was certainly a great experience!

But let yourself be sad and upset too. I had worked with these people for eight years. We had built a lot of good things together and it was hard to see that all go. My attitude toward work is very different now. I don't bust my arse and neglect my home life any more. Why should I? I did at my last job and got kicked to the curb.
But that was when I ruled the world
