Japanese Capture Images Of Giant Squid!

LONDON (Reuters) - Japanese scientists have taken the first photographs of one of the most mysterious creatures in the deep ocean -- the giant squid.

Until now the only information about the behavior of the creatures which measure up to 18 meters (59 feet) in length has been based on dead or dying squid washed up on shore or captured in commercial fishing nets.

I recommend you watch the video, too. Its 2:13, but its pretty cool!

For such a monumentous scientific achievement there has been remarkable little reporting of this.

This photo is one of those events that is right up there with discovering an extinct species is.

When my aunt and uncle moved up here they had one of them giant squids painted on the side of the U-Haul they had (well half of one on the one side there, my uncle kinda scraped off the other half pulling out of a gas station)

Very cool. Amazing it took this long, but that just goes to show pure research does pay off in the end. And the best part is that this discovery only scratches the tip of the iceberg; we really have no idea what else is down there! It's a very exciting time to be exploring the oceans (and the heavens, for that matter).

Oh, you know they don't have time for real news...it's more important to have 24/7 coverage of the newest tropical wave forming in Ethiopia....

Sure, we're concerned for our lives. Just not as concerned as saving 9 bucks on a roundtrip to Ft. Myers.

I was under the impression that giant squids should be, actually, giant. If this squid-guy is only about 50-60 feet long, I don't think it's all that a big deal.

It is, probably, a big deal that the first photographic evidence captured of THIS particular creature is presented, but what about those multi-hundreds-of-feets-long-dudes that the world is waiting for?

I (as most are) am still awaiting a REALLY big squid, like something that "we" could use a picture motion or TV theme. Ooops. Sorry; that's already been done before  Smile Regards...jack

The largest squid are thought to be around 100 feet long, based on one that ate a British Navyman in WW2. A 90 foot one washed up in Australia a few years back

But a 60 foot long squid is plenty big enough - you wouldn't want to go diving near that bad boy!
