Example Of Internet Crap - Martin Luther King

Sat Oct 01, 2005 12:46 pm

I was truly moved when I attended the Baptist Church at which Martin Luther King and his son, Martin Luther King, Jr. preached while at the ATL meet just yesterday. Thanks to OYRJA for suggesting we go there.

Not only did we see his sarcophagus, but we also went into the Ebenezer Chapel and saw where he and his father preached truth. It was very moving, and I, despite my disdain for organized religion, was drawn near to tears.

Not only was Baptist music played, but several of MLK, Jr.'s speeches, including the "I Have Been to the Mountaintop" - the last public speech he ever gave - predicting his own death; not only eventually, but imminently, were truly devastating. Thanks to all in ATL - TRULY WONDERFUL PEOPLE.

And after all this, I go to look for more information on the internet, and I find this:

http://www.martinlutherking.org/

By URL, it looks genuine. By name it seems pure. It goes to show that internet information may not always be pure.

Read it, and weep. It contains the most ugly, despicable diatribe against one of the most pure Americans ever to live. I sat by his tomb. I hear his words. I don't care if anyone uttered them before. MLK had the balls of a hero. What makes him the greatest hero is that he wanted nothing more than to die for his cause. He wanted no protection - he wanted truth.

I am not religious, but I am someone who recognizes a prophet. MLK, Jr. was a prophet and a hero. May we all take some of him through life.

Ian - Thank you for bringing us there, and OYRJA, thanks for the idea.

Well, thanks for your eloquence. However, when I just clicked on it 5 seconds ago, it still did.

Can you manage to comment on what I've said about MLK without that link anyway?

Well of course it works.

I scanned down to the bottom of the page and saw the link to stormfront.org, David Duke's people--that explains why that trash is there.

I remember the day King was shot, and when the news alert came on the TV I thought, "but we don't have any kings in America". Well, I was only 7 at the time, and didn't understand who he was. Glad you got to go, and that there's someplace where his message is still alive.

... Has anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good die young,
Now I just looked around and he's gone.

Logan and all.

Dr. Martin Luther King was a great man who led the way to societal change in our country like no other. For the first time we changed our laws and mores to eliminate systematic injustice by non-violent means that were definitely the most difficult paths.

Tales told about Dr. King after his death, and half-truths or complete lies issued to besmirch the good he did by creating some smoke to cloud the good are simply the efforts of weaker pinheads who don't like the results of his work. I may not agree with everything Dr. King pushed, but then who does agree with everyone all the time? His main points however are universal truths that when ignored by societies lead to their undoing.

MLK, jr was not a perfect man, and he certainly had his share of human failings.....but his accomplishments in public life make him one of the greatest men of the twentieth century. His leadership impacted literally hundreds of millions of men and women and changed our society through peaceful means. To those from outside our country he was our Ghandi (a personal hero of MLK).

So......Number one, I don't believe the things printed in the article, and number two...I don't personally care what he did on his own time. He spoke from the heart and it was about the real things that count in life.

I still have difficulty listening to his prescient final sermon....he knew it was coming....and am still filled with admiration and respect for his speech, and the ideals espoused within, at Lincolns Memorial, and all through his life.

"I have a dream!" Character rather than outward appearance. Self determination.

With you on that. Between you and me (and Mark and Thomas).

Beyond this, I have nothing to add other than I am walking anew - with a fresh admiration for life. Doesn't mean I'll be nicer per se, but perhaps just a bit more reticent in my search for truth.

Where else would you expect to find out information about MLK, Jr.?

So, here I am remembering the solace in the Ebenezer Chapel, and wanting the race of us (sic) to just feel it. That's all I was going for. We don't need to re-iterate that the website is garbage - I thought I made that clear in my initial post.

Yes, MLK is a true hero, may he rest in peace. Unfortunately there will always be people in the world whose hearts are filled with hate, and the Internet only propagates it.

Thanks for your kind words about us Atlantans...we try, even though we Southerners are mercilessly mischaracterized.

It's a good thing you guys didn't attempt to go to the actual visitors center (or did you?)...apparently family tension between Coretta Scott King's sons caused it to be closed Thursday, which is rare.

(from www.ajc.com)

Turmoil at King Center
Brothers feud over who is in charge

Nearly two years after Dexter Scott King announced that he would step down as head of the King Center, it has become evident in recent weeks that the move to shift authority to his older brother Martin Luther King III has unraveled.

Martin King officially took control of the center Aug. 22 after its board of directors voted to oust Dexter King, who has managed the center from his home in California. After the vote, Martin King announced to the staff that he had taken charge and immediately ordered the locks to the center changed, said people who are familiar with the dispute but asked not to be identified.

It is unclear what has transpired since then within the institution, which guards its privacy jealously. However, on Thursday there were signs of more change: A locksmith was seen changing the locks again as four uniformed Atlanta police officers stood guard. The center, which is usually open on weekdays, was closed.

Those kids have never lived up their own potential, let alone even approached the level of effort made by their father (unfair to expect, but they could at least try to do something worthwhile). They have never really had their own jobs, and I truly think that their father would have been embarrassed about their behaviour over the years.

This changes nothing about their father, I'm certain things would have been different had he lived.

Wow, that's messed up. Why are these people so good at proving what *ssh_les they are? Why anyone would buy into such a counter productive ideology is beyond me. Ignorance sure breeds a lot of hatred.

MLK is still the clear winner -- what an incredible person he was.

On a side note...did you guys know that when you post a link to any site it actually helps increase the site's search engine visibility? Google, MSN, and Yahoo count the number of links pointing to a specific web site, and that helps determine how high up on the search engine results a web site will be. Hence, if website (A) has 10,000 links pointing to it from other web sites on the Internet, and website (B) has 100 links pointing to it from other web sites on the Internet, website (A) will rank higher in the SE results for just about any keyword someone searches for.

If a couple thousand people linked to these bastards with a link that said this: white trash, then when you type 'white trash' into Google they'd be the first result.

It's called a Google Bomb, and some Dems did it to Bush:

Check out the first result for 'miserable failure' on Google

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=miserable+failure

So Mods, considering these forum pages are indexed by the search engines, would you please change the link text in these links to read 'white trash'? Thanks  Wink

SCORE!!  thumbsup

I was aghast when I typed in Martin Luther King Jr into Google and the link Logan had in the OP was the third (!!) selection, and it's advertised as being "A valuable resource for teachers and students alike."

Thankfully, Stanford's site appears first, and they seem to have a great collection. Somehow, I had stuck in my craw he'd died in 1965 instead of 1968, which would have made me 10 instead of 7. Jeez, I really am getting  old

Just another example of cybersquatting, this time with a twist. Usually a cybersquatter will use a domain name that is a different .whatever or is a transposed letter and that site is a porn site. What the Stormfront people did is definitely an interesting twist on it. Instead of porn, they use the cybersquatted domain name as a way to "educate" and potentially attract new members into the fold. When you have impressionable youth having to do papers on MLK Jr. and this site comes up, the potential of making an impression on the child and making them a future Stormfronter is there. The King Family needs to quite bickering among themselves and take on Stormfront (David Duke has been beaten before, and can be beaten again) and other hate groups.

There is a lot of good stuff happening in downtown ATL...lots of new development that is bringing more affluent/upwardly mobile homeowners in, while providing better housing for low-income people (which are usually minorities)-- mixed-use development and such as well as Habitat homes. The downtown area is becoming more integrated, more energized and just better.

The thing about the ATL metro area is that there are a lot of predominately black neighborhoods (by the residents' choice, not a segregation thing) that are like mirror images of the "white" suburban mid/upper to upper class neighborhoods (homes in the $300K to $1million range). These are in Southwest Fulton (Cascade Road area). A lot of higher income blacks have sort of migrated to that area over the years and it has become a thriving area that rivals any we have here on the historically "white"/north side of town, in terms of beautiful scapes, home values and retail. So what I'm getting at is while you didn't see much integration in the areas we were in the other night, it's partly due to the fact that the people who can afford to live in these northside areas have carved out similar communities in other parts of the city. Not a good thing for diversity, but the income levels are not as polarized as it might seem.

Nice post on MLK there Logan. He is absolutely an amazing man. He was only 39 years old when he was murdered. One can only imagine what he could have accomplished had he lived a full life. He would be 76 today.

For those who might be interested here's a link to a well written report on the scum at Stormfront.

This is a piece by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), an organization that dedicates itself to monitoring and bringing legal action against hate groups like the low-life shitbirds at Stormfront. I don’t give money to many groups, but SPLC is one of them.

Wow...I actually clicked on the stormfront link.(curiosity)....But did nothing more than that....I actualy feel guilty for even looking at the Opening page on the forums......And I did not even click on any forums. It is really disturbing that crap like that is out there.

I agree i put MLK and Ghandi in he same league...Neither wanted anything more than basic human rights...Hero is not a word that does them justice....They were not looking to be looked upon as hero's...They just had a strong sense that things were wrong and needed to change....and went about doing that..

I once ended up on stormfront forums from doing a google search to find the ethnicity of a soccer player. It was pretty scary seeing all these people deciding which european team to support in Euro 2004 based on their theories about which squad had the purest blood, how David Beckham was secretly Jewish, etc. etc.

It's when groups like this disguise their extremist nonsense as moderation or "education resources"--as in the case of this website--that they become truly dangerous, IMO.

Anyway, I think MLK and Gandhi are my two greatest heroes. People throw that word, hero, around lightly these days, but these two combined charisma and leadership with groundbreaking thought, humanity, and a sense of justice.

I found the King center in Atlanta quite inspiring too when I visited.

The spelling is Gandhi, not Ghandi, or the even more ghastly 'Ghandy'. I realise a western accent tends to stress the 'a' and cause 'Gandhi' to rhyme with 'candy' but that is wrong - that particular 'a' sound does not even exist in most Indian languages; the pronunciation is roughly 'gone'-'dhee' .

Hey Barf: Thanks for the correction. I'm cool with that. I hate misuse of the language. Suffice to say I pronounce it correctly, but spell it like an idiot. OK, it's Gandhi.

The only analogy I can draw is Kalhua vs. Kah-looa.
