$600 for an iPod seems pretty high.

Regardless, there are several top-of-the-line players listed here for half that much:

I´ve got a Creative Zen Micro (5 Gb), Headphones Koss Porta Pro, great combination with awesome bass. Prize tag; $210

Cheers

$249 for an iPod nano:
4GB solid state flash memory (no harddisk; shock-resistant), colour screen (photo and album cover display), full iPod navigation, tiny, light, standard dock connector, large number of accessories available. The highest-capacity flash player on the market.

I have the black one and I can only recommend it.

Yeah, same here. Good but actually over-emphasized bass and relatively limited clarity in the higher range. Not too comfortable to wear. But still better than the portable alternatives I've heard so far and worlds apart from the earbuds included with the iPod.

Depends on what you need. If you only have about a hundred songs you want to store, dont go out and buy an iPod or some other large capacity player. I prefer Creative myself, they both have great low price players, and the Zen series. It all depends on what you are in the market for.
