Why And Not

Sun Oct 02, 2005 4:50 am

There's a question I'd like to ask. Perhaps someone on my most trusted forum could answer it.

why has Britain and many other countries have chosen domain names like etc etc and not simply .uk or .ar

I think it jsut makes websites and email adresses have uselessly long names. That's jsut my opinion. would anyone know why things are like that ?

Thanks in advance

The ccTLD (country-coded Top Level Domain) for these countries is .uk or .br, but they chose to introduce national .co/.com, .org, .gov etc. domains. It's just the national authorities determining whether or not they wanted to split the national URLs into further domains.

To understand this you need to know URLs are to be read from back to front when you want to determine the level of the domain. Example: is server dict at a .org domain called .leo.

I've been wondering that myself...

Maybe the Ukraine already has .uk? Just a guess hehe
