Depression Humour

Fri Oct 07, 2005 2:40 am

Because I am someone who has suffered from depression, I am not minimizing the hell it is, but thought I would post some levity on the subject.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Psychiatrists say that one out of four people are mentally ill. Check three friends. If they're OK, you're it.

"Interesting survey in the current Journal of Abnormal Psychology: New York City has a higher percentage of people you shouldn't make any sudden moves around than any other city in the world."
-- David Letterman

The more things change, the more they stay insane.

"Some mornings it just doesn't seem worth it to gnaw through the leather straps"
- Emo Phillips

The light at the end of the tunnel is the headlight of an approaching train.

"To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kind of scary. I've wondered where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus, and a clown killed my dad."

Normal is just a setting on the washing machine
- Whoopi Goldberg

I was once thrown out of a mental hospital for depressing the other patients.
- Oscar Levant

"Psychoanalysis?? I thought this was a nude rap session!!!"

Psychiatry enables us to correct our faults by confessing our parents' shortcomings.
-- Laurence J. Peter, "Peter's Principles"

If you talk to God, you are praying; if God talks to you, you have schizophrenia.
-- Thomas Szasz

Don't worry if you're a kleptomaniac; you can always take something for it.

The neurotic builds castles in the air. The psychotic lives in them. The psychiatrist collects the rent.

manic depressive, adj. easy glum, easy glow.

If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation?

Q: "How many paranoids does it take to change a light bulb?"
A: "Why are you trying to kill me?!"

Did you know that two in every one person is a schizophrenic?

You're never alone with...a schizophrenic...

A depressive is the man who has the misfortune to see the world as it really is.

People who suffer from depression can have a sense of humor. In fact, I think they have a more intellectual and sophisticated sense of humor than the happy airheads who are always giggling at everything.

edit:
Let me add a couple more things. The funniest novel ever written is "Lucky Jim" by Kingsley Amis. And the funniest movie that people who are depressed can really appreciate is "As Good As It Gets". Try those when you're feeling bad.

checkmark  A lack of (self-)respect combined with a sense of humour will usually make for a great laugh.

Despression is about self-hatred. For a depressed person, lack of self-respect would be a good mood.  Smile

The great comedies can get you to laugh at yourself and feel good about yourself at the same time. That's why "As Good As It Gets" is so wonderful. It has a lot of humor that can only be fully appreciated by people who have experienced chronic depression for many years. Laughing at Melvin while recognizing that he's like you makes it a special movie.
