Futurama And The Simpsons!

Fri Oct 07, 2005 9:38 pm

Who here loves Futurama and The Simpsons?

I love both of them think they are the greatest show ever made (along with tom and jerry) and simply love them to death!

But what I want to know is who else loves the great shows? out of everyone here on A.net.

Futurama is cool but they didn't make many so you always get the same ones over and over (still funny though).

The Simpsons absolutely rules!! My favourite TV show and I never get tired of watching it over and over.

Ever see the Conan O'Brien show where he was interviewing Dan Castalanetta and Harry Shearer? Absolutely hilarious! It's on the web somewhere, if I find it I'll post it!

Cheers,
Noel.

Always enjoyed Simpsons, and it's on the TV virtiually every day over here, and has been for several years now.
Futurama is good too, but has only been on TV during the very first season a few years back. It's good entertainment too, but I'd rather watch a Simpson episode if I had to choose between the two.

Yes, the Simpsons are fantastic; a very funny and sarcastic show. Futurama is funny, too, but I give the preference to the Simpsons any time. Especially the later episodes of the Simpsons are very critical of society events.

The Simpsons is getting tired now.

Futurama suffered in later seasons, some blame that on George W Bush! Honestly!

One of the scriptwriters was Kristin Gore, Al Gore's daughter. It seemed that after her daddy lost the Presidential election to Dubya the show became much less 'funny'.

The thing is you cannot choose between the two!

They are different types of comedy futurama is more adult society comedy.
And the Simpsons is more low brow stupid comedy.

You just got to love them both!

Never watched Futurama but I've long said that The Simpsons was probably the best social commentary being written in its time. Even that virtue cannot spoil the humor.

A couple of my favorites:

A gun store called "Bloodbath & Beyond"

Springfield Retirement Castle - "Thank you for not discussing the outside world."

All the celebrity appearances, especially Ron Howard and Linda Ronstadt

And of course Homer, teetering his snowplow on the edge of a cliff, saves himself by dialing his radio needle over to the right edge of the dial, tipping it back onto the road.

Speaking of Bush, one of my favourite Simpsons moments was when the Media circus comes into town, all the little news trucks followed by Fox News - a huge satellite truck playing "We Are The Champions" over the tannoy, with a huge "BUSH-CHENEY 04" banner on the side! Loving it!

Amen, Sir!

They look like kids' comedy, but they are a great social commentary ... if you understand it.

almost as funny as watching Fox News itself.

I did see that one, and also like the way they slip those little digs in now and again. But it's becoming tired nowadays after all these years, maybe it's time to call it a day rather than let it descend into mediocrity. Quit at the top.

A great moment was when Bart accidentally "moons" the flag. Skinner calls in Homer and Marge and says:

"I was offended not only as a principal, but a veteran of America's only loosing war"

Homer (with his finger up) - "To date!"

Not getting tired at all. Simpsons is by far the best TV show ever.

To me, Futurama seems very similar to the Simpsons. Most people I know who watched the Simpsons a lot seem to think that Futurama is a little bit "tired" because of this, although many like it anyway. I never watched much of the Simpsons, but I enjoy Futurama a lot  Smile.

On a slightly unrelated note, it was a real hoot watching "24" and "American Dad" with my roommates and their friends last year. There was a pretty good political mixture there. It was funny how a couple of the ultra-conservatives thought that "24" represented the way the intelligence services actually work and even more funny when "American Dad" was making fun of conservatives, but the conservatives in our group missed the humor and thought that the show was trying to be serious and promote what they thought were actual good ideas (like interrogating all of one's Muslim neighbors).

The Simpsons is good, but I'm getting tired of it. I like Futurama, and at least there are still some episodes I haven't seen yet. But right now the best cartoon out there is definitely Family Guy. Absolutely hilarious!

Love both of them...I didn't mind the liberal slants because it was cleverly done and funny (although they did get a little preachy in the later episodes).

Bender and Fry (Futurama) were awesome!

I remember watching "Inside the Actors Studio" hosted by James Lipton when the entire cast of the Simpsons were featured. It was so cool to place faces behind the voices. Here's a video clip:

The Simpsons Cast on "Inside the Actors Studio"

All but a couple play several characters:

Dan Castellaneta plays Homer Simpson, Grampa Simpson, Barney Gumble, Krusty the Clown, Groundskeeper Willie, and Mayor Quimby.

Harry Shearer plays Mr. Burns, Waylon Smithers, Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, Otto, Reverend Lovejoy, Dr. Julius Hibbert, Kent Brockman, Lenny, and Rainier Wolfcastle/McBain. Cool Sidebar: He is also Derek Smalls in Spinal Tap:

Nancy Cartwright plays Bart Simpson, Nelson Muntz, Rod and Todd Flanders, and Ralph Wiggum. Cool sidebar: Also plays Chuckie on "Rugrats:"

Hank Azaria plays Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, Moe Szyslak, Chief Wiggum, Comic Book Guy, Lou, Carl, Dr. Nick, Snake, Superintendent Chalmers, Professor Frink, and Cletus.

Julie Kavner plays Marge Simpson and Patty and Selma Bouvier. Cool Sidebar: She played Brenda Morgenstern on the "Rhoda" TV series:

Yeardley Smith plays Lisa Simpson.

Of course, there are other actors, but those are the "big" ones.  Smile

If I remember rightly, Julie Kavner left the show halfway through. There had been some sort of dispute iirc, and during recording the show went way over time. By the second half they had been in there 5-6 hours. There was an argument between Lipton and Julie, he wanted her to do Patty & Selma's voice but she didn't want to, she just wanted to finish the whole thing. She got up to go to the toilet and didn't return.

Also notice how Julie Kavner wasn't shown when she did her voice. Every time she did her voice she had a mask over her face. Apparently Julie doesn't like being filmed when she is "in voice" so to speak.

The local station that re-runs the Simpsons has been running through some of the earlier episodes from the first few seasons. Some of those episodes are downright classics now. And they are very different from the current run.

In the past 5-8 years I feel that the Simpsons have become far too formulaic, and far too much "The Homer Simpson is an Idiot" show. Early Simpsons Homer was not played as a complete boob. While he was bumbling and his competance as a father and nuclear technician were at question, he really did care about his friends and family.

I think I can appreciate Futurama moreso that it is no longer in regular production. It really is a fair bit different from the Simpsons formula, and the humor is more mature.

Simpsons: Rock. One of the best shows ever, although it is drying up a bit.

Futurama: NEVER liked it, not one episode, so I stopped watching it after one season.

Actually, I'm partial to Seinfeld and M*A*S*H reruns and The Three Stooges . . . and occasionally I'll catch a Frazier episode in rerun.
