Minneapolis and Pittsburgh ahead of New York?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?  gnasher

I'd argue that NYC should be in front of Boston and LA too, but I can see that those two have a case. But MSP and PIT?

Surely they jest.

I'd put Seattle and San Francisco above Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, etc., but in comparison to the other int'l cities, I really can't argue. Vancouver definitely belongs at the top.

Did the people who compiled this list even bother to visit these places?

Are people honestly arguing that Tashkent, Riyadh, and Dakar are better places to live then Portland Oregon, or Christchurch N.Z.? Perhaps the attractions of Lagos and Karachi were too much to pass up. sarcastic

28. Boston, Massachusetts

This surprises me.

Quoting Birdwatching (Thread starter):
32. (tie) Lyon, France

This doesn't....beautiful city!

Quoting Birdwatching (Thread starter):
34. Atlanta, Georgia
34. Chicago, Illinois

Both of these surprise me for even being on the list.

Quoting Birdwatching (Thread starter):
39. Houston, Texas
39. Los Angeles, California
39. Minneapolis, Minnesota
39. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvani

I don't buy Houston without any reference to Dallas in the list. Houston might be good for certain types of commerce, but Dallas is by far a better place to live.

I can't believe Los Angeles made it.

I don't know much about Minneapolis and Pittsburgh, but from what residents have told me, I can't believe they made the list either.

It seems like a LOT of good cities were left out completely.

WOW we made it to 105.. Mexico City. It is a really interesting city I must say that, I love it. But I am not sure everyone can make it there... But New York? I love New York too, but I have to admit you can get a better standard of living some of the other cities below it..  Smile I like Washington DC.. etc..

Toronto is a favorite for me...I am glad it is up there...

Cleveland sucks.

Pittsburgh is nice to visit and do buisness, and unless your working in the medical or tech field I wouldn't live here. To be honest the days of the steel mills are long gone, and all sorts of buisness have taken their spot on the banks of our rivers. It's alot more beautiful than most people think.

The first few cities on this list seem right but then they just lose the plot, as they got closer to the bottom it seems that they just started naming large cities at random.

I don't know about anyone else but I have always dreamed of dropping everything and starting over in the only place where such opportunity exists...Lagos!! And what modern woman wouldn't dreaming to warm, friendly, welcoming Riyadh!

vienna 4th?
i agree, it's a cure for one's nerves and stress. but:
1- this is europe: everything is ridiculously expensive for complicated reasons that no one really gets.
2- i could do with a warmer weather and a seashore (south of spain, italy.. ).

That list seems a little strange to me.

Japan only had Tokyo and Osaka. I wouldn't want to live in either one. Kobe? Not on the list. It is green, access to major airports and railroads. Kobe has great variety of International schools, universities, restaurants and shopping. It is also very clean and safe.

http://ncafm.ele.eng.osaka-u.ac.jp/images/kobe-1.jpg

Where are Nagoya, Sapporo and Fukuoka? I doubt these cities would be below Karachi.

Osaka? Dirty, smelly and industrial.
Tokyo? Huge and no real neighborhoods.

I guess there are only two cities in Japan.

I heard about this survey back in 2002 on the radio.

In response to what criteria is used - Perth was edged out for number one by Melbourne because they had 'better weather' which is EXTREMELY debatable.

So I would guess it would be

Weather
Cost of Living
etc.

Maybe this will open people's minds to the fact that there are some great cities out there that are either tainted by negative stereotypes or are greatly misunderstood. (And that some cities have been vastly overrated.)
